Hello my readers I know I said I'd update a little sooner, but I got a writer's block; I absolutely had no idea how I would continue this, at least for a couple of hours... Right now it's 11:45pm here where I live, luckily, my brain started working again, and I've managed to write half of chapter 6 though it might be kind of sloppy... Still, I want to post it just to show you that I keep my promises; if I manage to finish the second half soon enough I'll post it later, if not, you might have to wait until tomorrow, or in the worst case, until the day after tomorrow. I'm sorry

CHAPTER 6

A couple of weeks after their “reunion” if you could call it that, things had really gotten back to normal, the two college students spent most of their free time together, like friends of course; going to the café every once in a while to say hi to Boss, sometimes going to the movies, sometimes to the mall, and such. The only thing that had changed was that now both of them were aware of what they felt, Kai for Atsuko and vice versa; still, none of them could bring themselves to confess, due to the recurring thoughts of ruining the great friendship they had, and on top of that, the fear of being rejected by their significant other.


Both of them pretended to forget about the awkward situation that took place at Atsuko’s apartment –kiss included-, acting as if nothing had happened. After that day, Kai had learnt (the hard way) that making any bad comments about Atsuko’s cooking was completely suicidal, and wouldn’t go unpunished if she happened to find out. He had sworn that he’d never do that again, especially if Atsuko was in the same room.


As much as things seemed to be back to normal, the truth was neither of them could really forget about the –accidental– kiss they had shared the other day, and trying to hide it was torturing because it also meant they had to keep hiding their feelings. They didn’t know for how long they could keep doing it, and that scared them.


A certain Thursday…


Atsuko was getting ready to go out with Kai, as it was now usual; this time he had promised to take her to a place they haven’t been before, and she was, well, pretty excited about it. It had been around two or three months since she had arrived in New York, as long as it might seem, she hadn’t had the chance to go around the city that much, there were many museums she wanted to visit, many stores she wanted to buy at, and so... but above all, there was a special place she had always dreamed to go to; Broadway.


Since Atsuko was a little girl she had always adored watching musicals and singing along to them; she had even promised herself that she will visit the aforementioned place at least once during her lifetime. Now that she had gotten the chance to be in New York for a whole year, she was sure she would be able to make her childhood dream come true.


She was proven wrong as soon as her classes had started; her schedule was full with the different college-related activities she had to do during the day –sometimes even during the afternoons–, and well, there was also the time she –willingly– spent with Kai, which kept her occupied during most afternoons, sometimes until the late hours of the night. This left absolutely no time for her to do stuff on her own, not to mention she still didn’t know how to move around the city that well; just the places she usually visited.


She was almost done when her phone started ringing, it wasn’t the tone for phone calls, but the one for messages/mails; she wondered why Kai had texted her instead of just calling her, but then she realized the message wasn’t from Kai, but from an unknown number.


“Hello, it’s been a while since we last saw each other, can we meet?” the message said.


She concluded it may have been sent to the wrong number, so she didn’t give it much importance, and kept doing what she previously was.


A few minutes later, Kai called her to let her know that he was on his way to her apartment, so she better be ready by the time he arrived…


“Mou… just because I’m a girl it doesn’t mean that I need to be reminded by everybody to hurry up” she thought a little annoyed. Kai sometimes could be a jerk, but she knew it wasn’t intentional.


She then heard a knock on her door, Kai had arrived.


She rapidly made her way out of her room, through the living room, until she reached the door; as she opened it, she saw a big bouquet of flowers, red roses. Said roses were being hold by a guy who she at first thought to be Kai; due to their size, his face was covered. She then realized this guy was considerably taller than her blonde midget, so she concluded it must have been someone sent from the flower shop.


Atsuko told him to leave the flowers on the table and so he did; she didn’t know how, but in the blink of an eye, and before she could do something, said guy was holding both of her hands, looking into her eyes. She could now see his face; a tall brunette guy with long hair, big brown eyes, a 3-day beard, and… was that a mole on his lower lip? He somehow looked familiar, but she wasn’t able to recognize him.


He had now trapped her between the table and himself, and suddenly stole a kiss from her…


“Long time, no see, Atsuko” he said hugging her after the kiss; then Kai arrived.


He dropped the little bouquet of pink carnations he was previously holding in his left hand due to shock; he seemed hurt, for some reason. He didn’t even stay for an explanation, since he figured his friend had gotten herself a boyfriend and would want to spend some quality time with him.


As soon as Atsuko noticed Kai leaving, she tried to loosen herself from the guys embrace…


“Get the hell way from me, you creep, I don’t even know you!!” she yelled at him, while trying to push him away, unsuccessfully.


Kai heard Atsuko’s shouts at her “boyfriend” and rushed back into her apartment; he then grabbed the unknown man from the shoulders and threw him away from his friend, as soon as the guy hit the floor Kai grabbed him from his shirt’s collar and punched him in the left cheek. The bearded man growled in pain, and tried to stand up, but Kai grabbed him again, and was about to punch him for the second time when…


“Wait, you don’t understand… Atsuko, it’s me, RIKU!!” he managed to say while in pain.


“R-Riku?! Kai stop, don’t hit him anymore!! I know him!!” Atsuko shouted to her little “bodyguard”.


“That doesn’t change the fact that this idiot forced himself onto you, Atsuko-san!!” he replied as he punched him again.


“Wait, no Kai, that’s how we greet each other!! He’s my best friend from Japan; we’ve known each other since we were very young!! Please let him go!!


“Yeah dude, I’m her childhood friend, calm down!!” the other guy said.


“Still, you were so lovey dovey with her, I actually thought you were her boyfriend…” Kai said, with a reddened face. ”I was actually a little jealous…” he thought.


“Don’t worry Kai, he was just messing around… Could you give me a minute to talk to him?” Atsuko asked.


 “F-fine, but if he tries some weird stuff again I’ll punch him…” he stated as he went into the kitchen.


“Dude, that hurt!! What the hell’s wrong with that Midget?!” Riku asked Atsuko.


“Y-you shouldn’t call him that, you’ll just get punched again…” she warned.


“Who called me a Midget?!” Kai rushed out of the kitchen, quite mad.


“Calm down Kai, no one said Midget, must have misheard…” she lied to avoid him getting mad at her friend once again.


“Yeah, chill, little guy” Riku said, a little teasingly.


“Hey, you want another punch?! Anything that refers to my height is NG, got it?!”


“Fine, dude, just go so I can catch up with my BEST FRIEND” Riku said, bragging about his relationship with Atsuko.


Kai was visibly mad with that statement, he had already noticed that the way Riku looked at Atsuko was more than friendly; he had found a rival, and he wasn’t happy about it. Still, the other guy had quite an advantage, since he had known Atsuko longer, plus they had been “best friends” for quite some time...

CHAPTER 6 Part II

He had to find a way to gain Atsuko’s attention back again, and like that be able to defeat Riku; he couldn’t stay with his arms crossed, and he utterly refused to lose the girl he liked to this guy.


Atsuko seem delighted with her surprise visitor, there had indeed been a few months since they had lastly seen each other; though they still communicated via e-mail, but it certainly wasn’t the same. Her best friend had changed so much she was barely able to recognize him, which had started the whole “Boxer Kai” thing not so long ago.


“Riku, what the hell happened to you?” Atsuko inquired, “You look like a hippie…”


“Hey, leave me alone, I’m just trying different looks, besides, chicks dig beards and long haired-guys…” he said confidently.


“Yes, but if you combine them you look like a homeless person, and we girls definitely don’t like that, as for myself, I prefer clean-looking guys…”


“Then I’ll cut my hair and shave my beard, that way you’ll like me…”


“Oh Riku, you’re such a teaser, no wonder why every girl back in Japan was madly in love with you” Atsuko shrugged him off, she was used to Riku’s smooth talk.


“Well, I’m an ikemen after all… besides, I’m in a band, of which I happen to be the leader, so yeah, of course chicks would like Me.” he winked towards Atsuko.


“You’re right, though I only like you as a friend…” she muttered, but Riku heard her.


“I could never understand why you didn’t want us to be more than friends, you know I’ve always liked you…”


“It’s not you, I think you’re an amazing guy, and the greatest of friends, but I’m just not the right girl for you… you’re more like a big brother to me, you know?”


“Yeah, I guess I’m fine with that… which is why if you happen to have a wooer (does this word even exist? Lol) he’ll need my approval first…”


“Riku, you’re such a joker”


“I’m not joking; I’m 200% serious… I don’t want you dating an asshole”


“That tranquilizes me, I knew I could always count on you” she said with the most honest of smiles.


“You know I’ll always support you, babe (this is Riku’s nickname for Atsuko, since they met when she was a baby; he is 5 years older than her)”


Kai was getting bored being alone in the kitchen, so he decided to step out; he saw Atsuko giggling along with her Japanese friend while sitting on the couch, their backs facing towards him. He was obviously jealous, but he understood it had been some time since both of them had seen each other, so he thought it’d be better if he left; he and Atsuko could go on a date some other day….


He went to the living room, stood behind the couch and poked Atsuko’s shoulder.


“Ehh… Atsuko-san I guess I’ll be leaving now”


“Oh Kai, I had forgotten you were here…”


“Hehe, yeah, I was in the kitchen… Sooo, I remembered I had something else to do, besides Yuko just called me, she wants to go somewhere with me”


“Ooh, so you’re going out with Yuko…” she had gotten a little jealous, hearing Kai mentioning her name, “I have an idea!! We don’t have to cancel our date, why don’t I bring Riku along, and we go on a double-date?” she happily suggested.


“But babe, he’s going out with her girl, we shouldn’t bother th—“


“Ok, I’ll tell her” Kai interrupted him.


Truth is he had lied about Yuko; yes, she had called him, but that was a few hours ago. In fact, since THAT day at the café, she had been calling him at every single hour, trying to make him go out with her, unsuccessfully. Now, he’ll have to swallow his pride and invite HER out. He didn’t want to, but it was necessary.


*Dialing*


“Hello, Y—”


“Oh, Kai, I knew you’d end up calling me, I’m so happy!! I was right you love me and not her, blah blah blah…” she interrupted him.


“Yeah, whatever… ehh, I know this isn’t like me, but I want to invite you out to eat something, Atsuko and her friend are coming, too…”


“Oh Kai, you’re such a killjoy, I thought we were having a romantic meal” she pouted on the other side of the phone.


“It’s not like I need you to come, I was just being polite. But fine, if you don’t want t—”


“I’ll go” she surrendered, she knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance.


“Fine, let’s meet at ‘Laporte’ the French restaurant near the 5th Av. in about an hour”


“Sure, your Majesty… you’re paying, right?”


“Yes, but don’t exceed yourself”


“YAHOOO, expensive free food here I come!!”


Little did he know that adding Yuko to the equation was just gonna make things more complicated; he was about to face one of the greatest obstacles, all for Atsuko’s sake.
