Click!“Okay! We are done for the day.” He announced, proudly showing a grin as he unfurled his sleeves, covering his slender arms.
“Ume-kun!”
“Ah hai!” He brushed through his short black hair as the trio of girls rushed toward him.
“Picture? Can we have one by you?” The shortest of the three asked.
He nodded his head as he noted that she was just below his height while the others looked like pillars next to her as they stood to the side. He counted his steps backwards to get a focus of the group before calling out the special word, “Cheese!”
As they repeat it, the flash caught the three by surprise and held out his hand before taking another picture with a prepared grin from each of them before confirming the picture on the phone. He handed back with the girls huddling over the photo and walked over to the tripod to see a pair of eyes behind the pillar.
“Chotto…”
The image ran away but it was pictured perfectly as the blush of her cheek was perfectly etched in his mind. Ume-kun loosened the screw to retract the object’s height and placed it back into the bag. He knew where everything was placed and nudged it into place before closing the bag and lifting it up when he saw two pairs of hands wave at him.
“Ah Mashiro! Naopon!”
“Ume-kun!” Naopon shouted, running over to hug him. “Long time no see. Are you getting handsomer?”
He liked girls. He hated how they praise him for his looks. Ume-kun was given a complex of others, especially girls, had given him confidence with their talk. His cheeks turned into a cherry red as Naopon ran through his hair.
“Stop the torture.” Mashiro deadpanned. “You probably feel warm now, especially there.”
Mashiro being his next door neighbor had always made trouble to him despite being the elder one. She was frank about him while keeping her distance with the others of her peer group. He covered his front as the two led him out to the hallway. He turned back to see the eyes staring back at him. Being escorted out, he analyzed the eyes and kept a mental note of the person.
“Maybe Naopon can be your girlfriend…” Mashiro suggested as the boy’s head snapped to her. “Naopon looks like our age.”
“I do?” She questioned. “Seventeen was a while ago.”
“I don’t think Naopon would like me if I get easily flustered by her hugs.” Ume-kun pointed out as the two female nodded their heads. “Where are we going?”
The change in the subject gave him a moment to bring up the eyes. They held a secret. He liked how pictures had pointed out everything that real life couldn’t portray. Ume-kun held that gift of photography and came in second in the regional competition two years in a row, letting a bit of disappointment run through him before starting up with new perspectives of viewing an object.
“Food!” Mashiro pointed to the café as the two followed her inside.
Ume-kun scanned the room with aroma filling up his chest and his stomach rumbling for a meal. He pulled out a seat for Mashiro before Naopon as they sat at the same time and grunted with both in the position. He took his seat and the eyes popped out again before the person shielded it away. He turned to glance at the menu with the attention on the table across the room.
“What do you suggest?” Ume-kun asked as the eyes stared at him.
The image was perfect. Her lips stood out with the eyes as he forced a smile, waiting for the answer from the two females. His attention was still on the girl as she slid her eyes over to the other side. Ume-kun sipped from his glass of water and stood up before walking over to the other table.
His chest tightened up with feet slowly feeling like cement as he approached the table. Her eyes peered upwards, forcing a smile upon their faces. Ume-kun gripped the table before the other girl on the other side grabbed his wrist.
“Aren’t you Umemoto?” She asked as he turned to her.
“Yes! I head the photography club.” He introduced himself when the other girl walked away from the table. “Can you wait a moment?”
“Her name is Meru!” She called out as Ume-kun turned back quickly.
“Meru… such a beautiful name.” He thought.
“She isn’t shy but she has mentioned countless times about a boy she likes but when she has the courage, she never really says anything unless stand by the pillar.” She explained with her eyes turning like cashews as she turned back to her plate.
“That must be her.”
Ume-kun glanced around and noticed the waiter had been by the table and ran over to order the special for himself before returning back to the table where the cashew-eyed girl had crossed her fork and knife in front of her.
“Meru probably went to the bathroom. She can eat a lot but as long as she can pay for her side it’s fine.” She explained with a grin. “Also… you’re her first crush.” She followed with a whisper.
Ume-kun nodded and walked back to the table, keeping his eyes on the two females as they talked. He knew how it felt about being embarrassed. It wasn’t easy on anyone but he couldn’t sit for a long period until she came out and heading for the door. Ume-kun charged out and grabbed the female’s wrist and took her aside.
“What are you doing?” She jerked her wrist away before Ume-kun took out his phone.
“You want a picture? Maybe… together?”
The eyes turned away as her partner waved to him as she came up close to him. He wrapped his arm around her waist and gave a smile. She forced it upon herself when Ume-kun snapped the photo and glanced at the result.
“Meru-chan, kawaii!” He uttered as her pale face turned into a strawberry.
“Miotan even told you my name. You must think I’m a stalker!” She spat when he grabbed her wrist.
“Not really… Just thinking if you want to hang out and take pictures. You don’t…”
“I’ll do it!” Meru shouted before hiding her face behind her hands. “I like you.”
“Mio told me.” Ume-kun smiled, patting the girl’s head.
Meru pranced away as he returned to the table with a nice picture of the two with the females glaring at it with intrigue and elbowing him for his spirited ikemen-like moves.
