The King of Amachi couldn’t rest that night, he was anxious. He stood by his window, looking out to the rain while his Queen was fast asleep on the bed.
Instead of his night robe, the King was wearing his battle coat and his broad sword was ready by the dresser not too far from his reach.

As the night grew older and the rain turned fiercer, hastened footsteps followed by a series of soft knocks on the door alerted the King. Turning to the
Queen on the bed, worried if his wife would wake up by the sound but she was lying still, undisturbed. After grabbing his broad sword he walked to the
door, turned the handle lightly and opened it.

“Your Highness,” a guard stood outside the King’s room, hand on his forehead in a salute position and was panting out of breath. He must have ran his
way up. “They’re here – and they brought him with them.”

The King’s heartbeat rose but he maintained a calm expression on his face. He stepped out of his room and closed the door softly, carefully not to
wake up the Queen.

His destination was the training ground and it was located outside the castle. With the hard rain pouring down the earth that night, a castle maid
prepared an umbrella but the King rejected it. He wanted to go in the rain, just like his soldiers were and the man they brought with them.

Stepping to the wet soil of the training ground, the King of Amachi stopped in front of his two soldiers. He nodded to them and the soldiers fully bowed in
return. The King then shifted his eyes to a man bound with thick chains on the hands.

“Miyazawa Touji,” the King spoke, his voice was deep and heavy. “The leader of the Revolutionary Army is finally in chains.”

The man remained silent but he raised his face to the King. The King held his breath when he saw a black rose insignia with three petals on the nape of
the man’s neck.

“Why is it so hard for you to accept my beliefs, Miyazawa? I’m doing this for the sake of the Far Eastern Terrain.”

“You trampled on my home, burned down my village, Souryuu,” the man replied and he earned a hit on the side for calling the King’s name so lightly.

The man growled in pain.

“You should know the reason why you’re here right now, Miyazawa,” the King continued.

The man didn’t not respond, he stayed still under the piercing heavy rain. The King of Amachi felt the aura of a leader coming out of the man in front of
him and he was intimidated by it. This man was trouble. With a deep breath, the King looked to the sky where the full moon was shining behind the dark
rain clouds. “I, Kashiwagi Souryuu, the King of Amachi, sentenced you, Miyazawa Touji, to death, for the sake of the Far Eastern Terrain people.”

Even the King of Amachi could felt the heat from the angry eyes the man given him. “My life might end right here but my will, my idealism, my spirit will
live on. You will be thrown down from your throne, Kashiwagi Souryuu!”

The King of Amachi waved his finger and the two soldiers flanking Miyazawa Touji swiftly took their swords of the sheaths, stabbing him on the chest.
Thunder roared in the sky, instilled a vibration in the King of Amachi’s heart. The sky was probably celebrating the death of the rebellion leader but
there was a tiny bit of his mind that said the sky was displeased by it. Either way, the King was one step closer to conquering the whole Far Eastern
Terrain and he will not let even the universe to come in his way.

1st chapter,
since the prologue can be confusing (i know i'm confused at first too)
i think hecate meant the prologue to be just like that because so far for all the fics he/she made, they're always confusing at first
but the story gets better later on

so here's the 1st chapter, still confusing (at least for me) but maybe it will shed some light on the story

douzo :cow:

1

Yuuko snapped her eyes open, almost falling off the wooden chair she was on. It was that dream again, the same dream that had been eating her for
the last week. It made her night sleep left unfulfilled and when she tried to sleep by the day, the same dream followed. It was guilt and guilt, they say,
was not an easy thing to let go.

Yawning, she looked around the small room she was in, made entirely from woods and found a girl at the door. Under the pale orange light of sunset
seeping in from the small opening near the ceiling, her eyes were glistening with worry.

Yuuko straightened up her body, “Sasshi.”

“Are you okay, Yuuko-san?” the girl by the door asked. She was holding a piece of dirty rug on her hand. Behind her, another girl was peeking in.

“I fell asleep,” Yuuko gave the girl a smile.

“Um, everyone is already gathering outside. Itano-san told me to come and get you.”

Yuuko stood up from her chair, took the sword from the table in front of her and nodded. “Thank you.”

Sashihara Rino, a girl five years younger than Yuuko, moved to the side and let her pass. Yuuko nodded at the girl standing behind Rino, Kitahara Rie.
The two of them were not soldiers – unlike Yuuko and most of the people living there – they were just regular girls that wanted to help the noble cause
of winning their land back. And since they can’t wield any kind of weapon, they did another job: cleaning.

As she walked along a wooden corridor, Yuuko could hear a man’s voice, shouting very passionately. After a short flight of stairs, Yuuko opened up a
door that led her outside, to a small field packed with people. Every one of them was carrying swords and spears, some had arrows on their backs, and
the man Yuuko heard yelling was Aoki Kazuya.

“Tonight is the night!” Kazuya raised his fist to the sky as he shout. “Tonight will be the night we take back our land! For Hakuyama!”

At the last word, when Kazuya punched the air, everyone in the small field roared and held their weapons high above their heads. It made Yuuko let out
a heavy sigh as she walked to a girl standing a little far from the group, leaning on a wooden pole.

“Where were you?”

“Fell asleep,” Yuuko said and she swayed her head to the side, to the direction of a man standing on top of a stool in front of everyone. “Ne, Tomochin.
I still have a bad feeling about this,” Yuuko said to her.

The girl’s fingers brushed her long straight hair and tucked it behind her ears when wind suddenly blew a little stronger. “Tell that to him.”

Yuuko did tell that to Kazuya, a dozens of time in the least but the man heeded no attention to her words; he was set on his goal.

“We will throw the King of Amachi of his throne!”
Again, the crowd gathering in front of Kazuya cheered, waving their weapons in their hands. Yuuko shook her head and sighed for the second time.

**

The moon had gone up the sky replacing the tired sun in his duty to give the world light. Though far weaker than him, the moon gave a whole different
feeling to those looking at it. For Kashiwagi Yuki, the moon that night was giving her a feeling of sadness and it was supposed to be the night of her life.
That day, Kashiwagi Yuki became twenty one years old, old enough to inherit the throne to the kingdom she was born in: the Kingdom of Amachi.

Being a princess of Amachi meant that you can have everything and nothing at all at the same time. As the kingdom with the strongest army in the Far
East Terrain, the Kingdom of Amachi was greatly feared, leaving Yuki with no friends. The only friend she had was her Dachi, sworn from the day she
set foot on the Kingdom of Amachi’s castle doorstep to protect Yuki with her life. Even with the presence of her Dachi, Yuki still felt an enormous
loneliness every day and no matter how hard she tried to make friends, as soon as she reveals herself as the Princess of Amachi, no one would come
near her again. She blamed her father for this. If it was not because of his idealism of putting the whole Far Eastern Terrain into one kingdom’s flag, she
would not be this lonely.

Adding to the sadness she was feeling that night, right on her birthday, her father invited the Prince of a reputable kingdom from the Eastern Regions to
the castle. Although the King did not state his intention on inviting such a guest very vividly, Yuki knew what was going on and she didn’t like the idea.
“Princess?”

Yuki turned her head from the moon in the sky to the door. Her Dachi, dressed in a blue royalty robe, came inside the room. She found Yuki on the
balcony and walked to her. “You’re not ready yet.”

Yuki shook her head, leaning her head on her Dachi’s shoulder. The Dachi knew what troubled the Princess, she had been with her for so long, but she
couldn’t do anything about it. So she did the only thing she could do: hugged the sorrowful Princess.

Shinoda Mariko arrived at the Kingdom of Amachi five years ago. After a long journey around the world, she returned to the Far Eastern Territory; her
home. It was then that she joined the royal army of Amachi and the King asked her to guard his only daughter. Being a babysitter for a spoiled sixteen
years old was not the reason she joined the royal army but after spending a short time with the princess and learning how lonely she really was,
Shinoda Mariko took the title of Dachi – a friend for life – and she never left Yuki alone since.

“Mari-chan,” Yuki said softly, “can I not marry?”

Mariko put her cheek on top of the Princess’s crown. “I’m sorry, Princess.”

Not the best answer for the question but the only answer Mariko could give. In her heart, the short haired Dachi secretly wished that she could share
Yuki’s burden, if only for a tiny spec of it.

**

The Kingdom of Amachi Castle was built on the northern slope of the Far Eastern Terrain. As the biggest kingdom with the biggest number of soldiers, it
was greatly feared rather than respected. The King, Kashiwagi Souryuu, was a man with a great thirst for battle. He conquered the whole Far Eastern
Terrain within twelve years of battle. But he did that with purpose, a noble one, misinterpreted by his enemies that could only think of him as another
tyrant leader, hungry for more power.

The Kingdom of Amachi was having a huge feast that particular night; the birthday of the Princess of Amachi, Kashiwagi Yuki. The whole Kingdom was
celebrating. Noble knights, respected warriors, reputable merchants, priests and political members from all across the Far Eastern Terrain gathered in
the castle for the occasion. Of course, to ensure their safety, King Kashiwagi Souryuu placed three times thicker of security around his castle, spread
far to the small town of Hakuyama outside the castle’s walls.

After the sunset, Hakuyama went dead silent, a lot quieter than any other night. The people of the small town locked themselves in their homes, leaving
the town’s roads empty. Two guards of Amachi Kingdom, patrolling around the town, noticed this abnormality. Hakuyama was never been this quiet.

“Why is everyone set in so early? It’s so quiet.”

“None of them is invited to the Princess’ birthday party, probably sulking in their homes right now.”

“No, no. It’s too quiet tonight.”

An arrow pierced one of the guards’ chests. He growled in pain and crumbled into the ground. His partner drew his sword out and when he turned
around, a thick and heavy mallet hit his face from the side, destroying half of his face.

**

Two guards were overlooking the town of Hakuyama from the castle’s wall, right on top of the main gate. The humongous gate was already closed down
and locked from the inside with four guards on both sides to protect it.

One of the guards on the upper wall leaned his body forward, narrowing his eyes, trying to see beyond the darkness covering Hakuyama. He felt
something was amiss.

“Hey, why is the town is so dark? Does no one light oil lamp no more?” he asked to his partner.

The other guard, walked to his side, looking far to Hakuyama. “You’re right. Why is it so dark?”

A tiny red dot appeared in the distance, swaying a little. Then, it jumped up into the sky, high before it lost its altitude and started to go down. The
guards on the upper wall quickly realized that the red dot was fire attached on an arrow. They gasped when the arrow dug itself deep in the castle wall,
just an arm away from them.

“Fire arrow?” he looked down to the arrow, face turning red by the light from the fire. Then another arrow flew toward his direction, stabbing him right
on his chest.

**

The presence of the charming Prince of the Eastern Regions brightened the birthday party of Princess Kashiwagi Yuki in the Kingdom of Amachi.
Maidens from all around the Kingdom, nobles and alike, were lining up for his hand in a dance under the moonlight. As a Prince with remarkably
wonderful manner, the Prince accepted every woman, danced with one for a while before changing partners with another. He did that solely out of
courtesy because the girl he really wanted to dance with was, of course, the Princess. He had waited for her to come out to the backyard of the castle
but after a few hours waiting, she hadn’t shown up.

But he was patience, he never rushed thing and being patience was always paid him dividend, so he hoped that this long wait would be greatly
rewarded. The Prince had never once seen the Princess of Amachi in flesh and blood but her beauty had come widely renowned all over the Far Eastern
Terrain, went through the border and into his own ear at the Eastern Regions. And when his father told him that the King of Amachi had sent an
invitation for the Princess’ birthday, he felt like the moon had landed on his lap.

After dancing with another girl – the tenth girl, if he counted correctly – every guest at the party’s attention suddenly turned toward the castle’s back
door. The Prince let the girl he was dancing with go, walked through the guests at the backyard and stood under the stairs leading up to the castle. That
was his dividend, walking in a beautiful blue dress, hair braided neatly and a small crown rested on top of her perfectly crafted forehead.

“Princess Yuki,” the Prince couldn’t help but to mumble the name of the Princess as she walked out of the castle with her trustworthy Dachi, hand in
hand, facing everyone in the backyard garden.

The Prince was completely astonished and so was every single soul looking at the Princess that night, even the King of Amachi, her own father. The
King walked up the stairs and Mariko the Dachi stepped back, giving space for the King to stand beside his daughter.

“Lovely, My Dear. Truly,” he said softly to Yuki.

Yuki smiled; a small one. In her father’s eyes, the smile was mesmerizing, at the eyes of the Eastern Regions Prince, it was an utter beauty, but in the
eyes of Mariko, instead of smiling, Princess Yuki was crying, a loud one.

The King of Amachi turned around and faced his guests with a big and proud smile. He put one hand on Yuki’s shoulder, squeezing it a bit. “I present to
you, the next ruler of Amachi, Princess Kashiwagi Yuki.”

Yuki felt a sudden surge of wave hit her body, pinning her down the earth but she can’t show it, not when his father was this proud. She gave everyone
a warm smile, though fake, it was the best smile she could muster at that time. Everyone put their plates of food down and bent to give Yuki a bow. It
was overwhelming for Yuki she had to hold her breath for a whole second. It was after everyone raised their heads back up that Yuki started to breathe
normally again.

Then the Prince of the Eastern Regions let out a cough and it jolted the King. He smiled at the Prince and raised his glass of wine. “Yuki,” he said to
Yuki, “I have invited the Prince of the Eastern Region especially for your company. He is a polite man and a respectable warrior. No man can outmatch
him in a sword fight and that is not a legend, My Dear. I’ve seen it with my own eyes. Prince Ezra Ry Bruell”

Yuki nodded weakly. The Prince came up a step and bowed down a little, smiling blissfully as he took another step closer to Yuki. “I’m – I am truly
honored to be standing in front of you, Princess,” the Prince stammered a little. “Can I shake your hand, Your Highness?”

It was dilemmatic. If Yuki greeted the Prince’s hand it would mean that she accepts the future bond prepared by her father but if she doesn’t, it would
be a great insult to the Prince. Mariko touched Yuki’s back and that was enough to calm the Princess’ heart. She raised her hand, about to touch the
Prince’s fingers when the corner of her eyes caught a glimpse of a hooded figure standing on a tree branch at the far end of the backyard. She flinched
and retracted her hand.

“Yuki!” the King scolded her in an instant.

“No!” Yuki shook her head, taking a step back in surprise. “There! On the tree!”

The figure quickly disappeared into the darkness just when everyone turned their head to the tree.

“Don’t embarrass me in front of my guests,” he hissed.

“No! There really was someone in that tree!”

The King looked back at her terrified daughter, glaring her with his fierce eyes before returning his gaze to the tall tree behind the backyard. Mariko
walked a little bit to the front, hand on her sword.

Then, a sound of explosion echoed in the dark sky, inducing screams among the guests. Not long after, a guard ran to the backyard, climbed up the
steps and bowed at the King.

“My Lord!” he said. “The front gate is being attacked by the Revolutionary Army!”

**

Yuuko took a deep breath, breathing the cold air of the night. She was hiding behind a tree just outside Hakuyama Town’s gate. Her hand was holding a
girl’s hand, her best friend’s hand; Itano Tomomi. The latter girl had her eyes closed, concentrating.

Kazuya walked to them and looked at Yuuko. He nodded at her, signaling that it was time for them to go. “We’ve rattled their cage.”

“It’s time, Tomochin,” Yuuko said.

“I don’t know if I can do it.”

“I can always cut the gate open for you.”

“Mariko is inside,” Tomomi snapped her eyes open. Yuuko knew what she meant then and she took a sigh.

“She’s not one of us anymore, Tomochin.”

“But she’s still Mariko.”

Yuuko squeezed Tomomi’s hand tighter. “I’ll give her a good death from a good fight.”

Tomomi sighed. She let Yuuko’s hand go and walked to Kazuya’s side. Kazuya nodded at her as he led her out of the tree to the path leading to the
castle’s gate. Yuuko followed them in silent. At the end of the road, the Revolutionary Army’s archers were shooting at the guards on the castle’s guard
while the infantry hid behind them, crouching down.

“We have drawn their attention to us and we have taken care of the gate’s guard,” a man spoke to Tomomi. The girl nodded as he walked through the
infantry and got in front of the archers. She walked calmly toward the gate, closing her distance. Kazuya and Yuuko were on her back.

Tomomi stopped in her tracks, leaving a bit of distance between her and the gate. She closed her eyes and concentrated her minds. Yuuko waited for a
few seconds and then Tomomi put her hands in front of her face, taking a deep breath. Tomomi made fire from thin air, calling them to her hands and
the fire got bigger and bigger, swirling in her palm. When the flame was big enough, Tomomi let out a scream and sent the ball of fire flying toward the
gate.

Yuuko held her breath when the fire cut the stream of air. When it finally hit its target, the huge wooden gate shook violently, creaking and exploded
into tiny pieces. With a relieved breath, Yuuko turned to Kazuya. The man drew out his sword, raised it up high above his head and he roared. “Into the castle!”

Kashiwagi Yuki, the Princess of Amachi, got inside her room. The Dachi and the King followed her, shutting the door behind them. Yuki yelped when a
sound of explosion echoed and shook the window of her bedroom.

“The castle has been breached,” the King said as he walked to Yuki. Crouching down, he took his daughter’s hand and looked her in the eyes. “Listen, to
me. I have to prepare for the worst, My Dear. If this castle falls….”

“Don’t say that,” Yuki shook her head.

“If,” her father put a stress on his word, “this castle should fall, you cannot be here. You will go with Mariko across the forest behind the castle, run to
the lake near the Northern Mountains border and stay there until dawn.”

“I can’t leave you! You’re the only one I have left! I can’t lose you! Not after I lost Mother!”

The King ignored his daughter fret. He stood up and turned to the Dachi. “Mariko. I leave her in your hands. If by dawn you see no flag on the castle’s
roof, do not come back at all.”

“I understand,” Mariko nodded.

Yuki jumped up, trying to grab her father’s blue robe but the King walked away from her, heading to the door. “Stay safe, My Daughter.”

“No! Father!”

Mariko held Yuki’s body, restraining her. “Princess. He has no choice. If the castle falls, you have to survive.”

Yuki slapped Mariko’s hand. She stepped away from the Dachi, crying.

“Believe in your father’s strength, Yuki,” said Mariko.

Yuki bit her lower lip, turning her head away from Mariko.

“Let’s get you into something warmer.”

**

The Revolutionary Army got into the castle’s ground with the lead of Aoki Kazuya, turning the castle’s garden into a battlefield. Tomomi, after using her
Nou at the gate, wiped the sweat on her forehead. Her breath was rushing and her body was trembling a little. It was the biggest use of Nou she ever
did so far and her body clearly wasn’t ready for it.

Tomomi was about to crumble to her feet but a pair of hands caught her from behind.

“Oops,” Yuuko said, hugging Tomomi from the back. “You okay?”

“I’m fine,” Tomomi smiled. “Get inside. They need you.” Tomomi stood on her own feet, smiling at Yuuko.

Yuuko left Tomomi with a smile and she dashed through the destroyed gate. The garden behind the gate was chaotic but she didn’t intend to join the
battle, not yet.

Kazuya saw Yuuko running from the gate and he quickly assisted her, clearing a path for her to run. Yuuko noticed Kazuya’s help and she didn’t let it go
to waste. She ran faster, moving beautifully between the clashing forces, heading to the castle’s steps.

**

Mariko came out of Yuki’s room, holding on to the Princess’ hand as she did, leading her down to the main hall of the castle. They had to go through the
main entrance, went around to the side and crossed the East Gate. After that, they would follow a path to the forest behind the castle.

“We’re going from the front? Wouldn’t that mean we will face a lot of enemies?” asked Yuki.

“It’s faster. Don’t worry, Princess, I will protect you. But we will have to run very fast. We will have to be very fast.”

“Yes,” Yuki nodded. She took a last look to her back. Her father was standing next to Ezra, the Prince from the Eastern Regions. The Prince gave Yuki a
bow with her head, a small one. “He’s going to fight for us? The Prince?”

“Probably. He’s trying to win you after all.”

They finally reached the main entrance. Three guards were there, telling them to go back to the castle at first but when they heard that the King had
ordered them to run away, they cautiously opened the door, bidding them farewell and good luck.

“Put on your hood,” said Mariko and Yuki put the hood of her mantle up, covering half of her face.

With her visions blocked partly by the hood, Yuki couldn’t see what was happening in the castle’s garden clearly. She could see a lot of people moving
about, yelling and roaring like beasts. Some were groaning in pain. Yuki couldn’t help but to bit her lower lip, it was too overwhelming for her, she was
terrified.

Mariko held her hand tighter and she whispered, “We have to run through the garden, Yuki. Look on my feet, follow my every step. Understand? Do not
lift your hood. Just keep running.”

“Yes,” Yuki nodded, pulling the hood on her face lower.

“Here goes!”

Mariko yanked Yuki’s hand forcefully, jolting her to the front. Yuki was surprised, unprepared but she held her footings and caught up to Mariko’s pace.
They hurried down the castle’s steps, jumping two steps at once.

Yuki kept her eyes down to the ground until they reached the bottom of the steps. Mariko led her to her left, heading to the East Gate. Yuki knew the
place like the back of her hand and she knew that they were not too far from the gate.

But suddenly Mariko stopped running. Yuki bumped on her back, hurting her nose. The tall Dachi pushed her behind her back, shielding her from
something. Being told not to lift her face at any time, Yuki tucked her chin in, clutching to Mariko’s robe.

“Mariko!”

An unfamiliar voice yelled out and Yuki felt Mariko’s body flinched. Her breath rhythm broke down and she was intimidated, clearly. It was not easy for
someone as Mariko to feel intimidated but the owner of the voice just did the opposite.

It was a girl’s voice, not so older than Yuki, she could tell that much. Her mind kept telling her to look up, see the owner of the voice. She gave in to her
instinct and lifted her face. She peeked a little from Mariko’s shoulder. There was a girl standing in front of Mariko, quite far but close enough for Yuki to
see her face clearly. Behind her shoulder length hair, a pair of beautiful and fierce eyes were piercing Mariko like spears. There was a sword, sheathed
neatly on the girl’s waist and when she drew it out, Yuki had to hold her breath when she saw the color of the blade. It was crimson, glistening under the
full moon.

“Colored sword?” Yuki muttered. Her voice made Mariko snapped her head at her. Yuki was startled, took a step back and her hood was thrown down
by her body movement, revealing her face.

“It’s the Princess!” a Revolutionary Soldier shouted and pointed his hand at Yuki. More of the Revolutionaries turned to her direction and Yuki clutched to
Mariko’s robe tighter. They were surrounded and outnumbered.

“Stay still,” Mariko said to Yuki. She took her sword out, revealing the purple color of her sword, and she assumed a stance.

The Revolutionaries kicked off the ground, charging at Mariko, weapons at the ready. Mariko put her sword higher, ready for the attack when thunder
struck every one running at her. They were thrown off their feet, floating in the air before hitting the ground, grunting and growling. A girl in long blue
dress – cut on the left thigh so high, revealing her perfectly trained leg – jumped over Mariko’s head and landed right in front of her. She looked back
with a smile.

“You go on ahead and get the Princess out of here, Mari-chan,” the girl said, “I will deal with your friend.”

“Thank you, Sayaka,” Mariko put her sword back in the sheath. She grabbed Yuki’s hand and the two of them ran again, away from the girl with the red
sword.

“Do not come in my way, Mage.”

“Let us play,” Sayaka smiled, “Ooshima Yuuko.”

Without warning, Yuuko dashed at Sayaka, her red sword grazed the ground and left a deep scar on it. Sayaka clawed at the air in front of her, creating
a fire and then she sent them flying towards Yuuko.

**

Mariko managed to get Yuki out of the East Gate, went off the road to the field of tall grass, heading to the forest. Four Revolutionaries recognized them
and started to run after them. Mariko didn’t stop, she let Yuki ran ahead of her so she could watch her back. Then, Mariko saw a girl, crouching on a
tree in the forest. She was wearing an animal cloak, eyes watching them very observantly. A sword dangled from her waist, longer than a normal
sword.

When the girl on the tree met Mariko’s eyes, she jumped up, kicking on the tree branch and disappeared into the darkness of the forest. Princess Yuki
wasn’t lying when she saw someone in the forest. It could be anyone, ally or an opponent, but Mariko can’t worry about that now. She had to get Yuki to
the forest no matter what. From all the places in the Far Eastern Territories, that forest might be the safest place they could find right now.

Yuki jumped over a thick bush, almost tripped on her own robe but she hung on to her balance. Mariko was closely behind her, looking back a few times
to their chasers. The Revolutionaries weren’t giving up, they kept on chasing into the forest.

The Princess ran deeper into the forest, through the thick trees and vines. Her foot got tangled on a branch and she fell on her face. Mariko tried to help
her up but the Revolutionaries were closing in fast. The Dachi raised her purple sword, startling the Revolutionaries.

“Be careful! She has the colored sword!” one of them stopped abruptly in his track. His three friends did the same but none of them run away. Instead,
they were looking at Mariko with ferocious eyes, more than before.

“You’re familiar with this. Ooshima Yuuko has one of them so you should be aware of its capabilities. Be afraid.”

One of the Revolutionaries ignored Mariko’s words and started to jump at her. Mariko dodged to the side, pushing him with her elbow. The second
Revolutionary attacked from the front with a mallet and Mariko blocked the attack with her purple sword. The mallet cut in half very easily. He tried to
jump back but Mariko stabbed his foot with the sword. He screamed in agony.

Yuki pushed herself up, moving away from Mariko and the battle, walking backwards, until she hit a tree behind her back. She stayed there, watching
her Dachi fend off four Revolutionaries at once. The four Revolutionaries were no match for Mariko, Yuki knew that but she was scared nonetheless.
Mariko was being attacked from four different directions.

She closed her eyes and prayed that Mariko would win with no scratch on her. She concentrated hard and then her ears picked up a soft growl. Yuki
opened her eyes and heard another growl. The Princess of Amachi felt the tree she was leaning on shook a little. She turned her head up and saw a
direwolf climbing down the tree, flaunting its large and sharp fangs. Yuki was too scared to even scream. Her feet trembled and she slid down the tree.

A roar came from Yuki’s right side and another direwolf was roaring at her from behind a bush. Yuki’s fear peaked and she screamed in horror. She
jumped behind when the direwolf jumped out of the bush, plunging toward her. She quickly crawled and got back on her feet, strafing to the side when
the direwolf on the tree lunged at her.

“Princess!” Mariko called out to Yuki when she ran away from two direwolves inside into the forest. She tackled one of the Revolutionaries, stabbed
another one on the neck and slashed the third one on his chest. The rest two Revolutionaries pulled back a few steps when they saw their comrades
collapsed. Mariko used the chance to turn on her heels, running after Yuki.

Yuki ran as fast as she could from the direwolves. One had gone up, jumping from one tree to another while the other ran closely behind Yuki. The
direwolf crouched down and kicked off the ground with its powerful hind legs. The one on the tree left a branch, heading down on Yuki. The Princess
ducked down, screaming as she did, and let the direwolves hit each other. They rolled on the ground while Yuki used the chance to take more distance
from them.

“Yuki!” Mariko’s voice called the Princess’ name. Yuki stopped, looked around the forest and answered the call.

“Mari-chan!” Yuki shouted. “Where are you!?”

A creaking sound jolted Yuki. She pressed her back against a tree and looked up to the leaves. On a thick branch, a girl in an animal cloak was looking
down at her. Yuki shivered at the sight of the girl. Her face was gentle but her eyes were emotionless, empty. A black rose with five petals were
imprinted to the skin on the nape of her neck.

The girl shifted her eyes to the side and when Yuki followed the direction, she found herself looking at the two direwolves. They were back and
apparently, they had decided to work as a team. One direwolf slowly made its way to Yuki’s left side while the other watched her from the right.

Yuki tried to run but every muscle she moved was followed by the direwolves’ eyes. The two beasts were waiting, waiting for Yuki to make a move so
they could ambush her. Yuki decided to stay still but the tension given by the direwolves’ eyes, their fangs and their heavy breaths made her nervous.
When everything became too unbearable, Yuki did the worst. She ran ahead, to the opening between the two direwolves.

It was a wrong move. The two direwolves read her movements. One got behind her and another one blocked Yuki’s path. Both of them jumped at the
same time and all Yuki could do was scream.

A blue light flashed around the two beasts and Yuki in a circle. The circle widened its diameter in a blink of an eye and everything stopped moving. The
fallen leaves froze in mid air, the dancing grass turned stiff and even the wind held its breath. Everything in the world stood still.

But not her: the girl in the animal cloak. She dropped down from the tree branch, pulling her hood down. She walked closer to the Princess who was
now standing still, not even blinking.

Two direwolves at once, she thought. This girl, the Princess of Amachi, was clearly an unfortunate girl. Direwolves rarely hunt in pack, they always
wander the forest alone and they would fight each other if they meet on a hunt. But not for Kashiwagi Yuki the Princess, even the two hostile direwolves
decided to be teammates to have a bite at her.

She touched the nape of her neck where her five petal rose insignia was carved. The middle petal was shining blue, burning and it hurt so badly. The
girl shook her head in disbelieve. She crouched down and then she lifted the Princess up to her shoulder. With calm strides, she carried the Princess
away from the two beasts, still frozen in time. She carried the Princess all the way into the lake where she could see the snowy Northern Mountains on
the background. After putting the Princess down on the soft grass, the girl sighed, a long one.

The girl looked at the reflection of the moon on the lake and then she looked at her own. The burning insignia on her neck was getting stronger and the
pain escalated fast. The burning middle petal slowly faded. When it stopped shining, when the excruciating burning pain had gone, wind blew the girl’s
hair. The grass danced to the night breeze, the fallen leaves continued their way to the ground. The earth moved and finally got its heave of breath
again.

She heard something rustling from her back. The Princess had woken up and she was scared, for sure, because she started to scream.

“Who are you!? Where am I!? How did I get here!? Who are you!?” the Princess let out questions and the only thing the girl in the animal cloak could do
was placing her hand on her face, sighing. Why did she do such a thing?

It was a great honor and a chance of a lifetime to be walking side by side with the King of Amachi, straight to the battlefield. It was all Prince Ezra Ry
Bruell could think of as he followed the man through the main entrance of the castle. He stood there, gallantly in his blue royal battle robe. His faithful
broad sword was on his waist, sheathed, and anyone would know how dangerous it would be if the King pull it out.

Ezra realized something changed in the battlefield as soon as the King stood at the castle’s steps. Everyone felt his presence, some noticed him without
even looking back. The morale of the guards rose in an instance and even more when the King drew his sword out of the sheath, roaring a battle cry. It
sent a cold sensation to Ezra’s spine, enough to stir his whole stomach around.

An explosion attracted Ezra’s attention and it came from the east. He took a step down, drawing his own sword out. Another explosion occurred,
throwing dust and smoke. Ezra waited for the smoke to clear and finally saw what was happening. It was the castle’s Mage, Akimoto Sayaka, battling a
Revolutionary. Ezra’s eyes widened as he saw the color of the Revolutionary’s sword. It was gushing red.

“It can’t be….”

**

Sayaka took a deep breath, touching the air with her fingertips. She felt the air in her hands trembled. She clenched her fists, creating a spark of
lightning in them and after she gathered enough of them, she attacked Yuuko with it.

Yuuko raised her red sword, cutting the lightning, depleting it away from her. Yuuko advanced, closing in to Sayaka. She jumped up and plunged her
sword on top of the Mage’s head.

Sayaka made a wall out of thin air just in time, keeping Yuuko away from her. As retaliation, she made the wall of air burst into flame, throwing Yuuko
away. Yuuko landed perfectly on the land while Sayaka charged herself another lightning. This time, Yuuko moved faster. She stepped to the side and
swung her sword as hard as she can, sending a gush of wind to the Mage. Sayaka got blown away a bit, swaying on her feet, and the lightning she just
gathered, vanished.

The Mage resorted to a simpler Nou: water. She created water and threw a huge amount of them at Yuuko’s direction, making her as wet as a drowned
rat. Yuuko got annoyed when Sayaka retreated to the castle’s steps. The Mage smiled at her, a cunning one.

“You have one weakness Revolutionary. Do you know that? You think I didn’t see the intimacy between you and the Mage outside the gate?” Sayaka
smirked. “I know that she-.”

Yuuko jumped up to the steps. “Leave her alone!”

Sayaka jumped back further from Yuuko. She raised her hand and again, gathered lightning on her hand. Yuuko quickly assumed a defensive stance
but Sayaka threw the lightning elsewhere. Yuuko panicked. She followed the lightning with her eyes, screaming Tomomi’s name in her heart. But
Sayaka didn’t aim at her, she aimed at the leader of the Revolutionary Leader, Aoki Kazuya.

The lightning went through the man’s chest and he floated in the air and spun around for a few times before landing motionless on the ground. Yuuko
gasped and then she realized that she was giving a blind spot to Sayaka.

“Never show your back to your opponent, Yuuko,” Sayaka made a huge fire ball and sent them at Yuuko’s back.

Yuuko spun around, slashing the fire ball but she was too late. She couldn’t cut the Nou properly. The explosion threw her away, far from the castle’s
steps. Sayaka laughed and then she jumped up to the castle’s tower, standing on the roof. She looked down to the battlefield, smiling.

The Revolutionary Army noticed that their leader was down not too long after. When they saw dead Kazuya on the ground, some of them started to
move back, retreating.

“No, no,” Yuuko got up on her feet, “stand your ground.”

More and more of the Revolutionary Army ran away. At the castle’s steps, King Kashiwagi Souryuu looked at her with his old eyes. Yuuko couldn’t
believe what was happening. They were so close. The King was standing right in front of them but the Revolutionary Army was running away.

Sayaka put her hand up to the sky. The lightning started to gather around in her hand again, and this time, bigger than ever. Yuuko tightened her grip
on her sword, eyes were set on the King. She could reach the King before Sayaka strike everyone in the battle field with her lightning. She could kill
Kashiwagi Souryuu right now.

“Yuuko!”

Yuuko turned around. Tomomi was looking at her in fear. “Retreat!” she said.

Sayaka laughed maniacally from the roof. Yuuko looked up and raised her sword over her head when Sayaka let the lightning rain down the castle’s
garden. The sword depleted most of the lightning from Yuuko’s body but some hit the ground and threw her off balance. She won’t survive this.

Tomomi, watching her friend from afar, closed her eyes, concentrating her mind. She opened up her arms and heaved a heavy breath. Fire
accumulated in front of her and then she sent them to the Mage on the roof.

Sayaka dodged it in time. She jumped down and let the fire ball hit the roof, making a huge hole in it.

Tomomi fell on her knees, panting and losing her strength. “Yuuko….” Before she lost her conscious, Yuuko swooped at her, grabbing her shoulders.

“Hang in there, Tomochin,” Yuuko said. “We’re going home.”

**

Mariko panted and wiped the sweat on her forehead. She coughed up and felt her throat was dry after countless of times calling out Yuki’s name. She
was nowhere to be found. Mariko started to feel useless, guilt crept up to her heart. Her worst imagination started to play scary things of how Yuki was
torn into pieces by the direwolves and she would find her limbs in places.

Just when the Dachi was about to break into tears, she found two direwolves not too far from where she was standing. The two beasts were shaking
their heads like they just had a bad headache. They looked at each other before finally walking away to opposite directions.

Mariko walked to where the direwolves were standing and checked the grass. Only a few parts of the grass were bended, no claw marks on the tree or
ruptured soil. There was no battle taken place there. The Princess might still be alive.

**

By the lake at the border of the Far Eastern Terrains and the Northern Mountains, Kashiwagi Yuki, the Princess of Amachi was in utter panic. She was
sitting on the grass, in front of her was a girl wearing an animal skin as her coat, and she had no clue on how did she get there.

“What did you do to me!?” Yuki got up, grabbing a twig and pointed it out like a sword.

The girl turned around and faced Yuki. The moon shone on her face as she put her hood down. A rose insignia came into Yuki’s sight, a tattoo. The girl
sighed and shrugged. “Nothing.”

“How did I get here!?”

“I carried you here.”

Yuki gasped and touched her body, checking if something was out of place or missing. Then, she blushed at the girl. “Did you touch me!?”

“Yes.”

“Urgh!” Yuki threw the twig at the girl and grabbed another one from the ground. “I am the Princess of Amachi! You can’t just touched me and get away
with it! You will be sentenced to death!”

“Relax, Princess,” the girl shrugged again. “I just touched you where I need to, nothing more.”

“What happened to the direwolves?” Yuki’s shoulders were rising up and down along with her rushing breath.

“They’re still somewhere in the forest.”

“Are you – are you one of the Revolutionary Army?”

The girl shook her head.

“Who are you then?”

The girl walked closer to Yuki and the Princess raised the twig higher. “Don’t come any closer.”

“I-.”

“Don’t move!”

“I’m not even doing anything!” the girl snapped. “I just saved you from two direwolves! Show some gratitude!”

Yuki flinched at the sudden change of tone from the girl. “I don’t need any saving…,” her voice trembled.

“You’re going to cry now?” the girl sighed. “Great.”

“I’m not crying!” Yuki yelled. She tried hard not to but a tear escaped her eye. She quickly wiped it off with her hand. Yuki bit her lower lip when more
tears knocked on the back of her eyes.

The girl in front of Yuki sighed longer, rustling her own hair. “I should not have saved you. It is a mistake!”

“Then let me go!”

“I’m not keeping you captive! Do you see me touching you!? I am not even standing near you! You’re free to go!” the girl yelled again.

Yuki couldn’t contain her tears no more. She looked down to the ground, hiding her face as she sobbed with her hand still pointing the twig like a mighty
weapon.

The Princess was breaking down inside. Her whole world just took a downright turn in one night. The fact that she had to take on her father’s throne,
marrying a man she never even met or even heard his name before and now she was running away from a war, leaving her father behind. The last
thing she needed was to be kidnapped by a mysterious girl in the forest. She just wanted to go home, back to the castle, her home, to her Dachi and
her father.

The girl flicked the twig off of Yuki’s hand, made her retracted it and moved back in surprised. Her eyes were wide open when the girl was suddenly
standing so close to her. “I said don’t come any clo-.”

The girl took a short dagger from her cloak and offered it to Yuki. “Here.”

“Wha – what?”

“Take this. Take it out of its sheath all the way out of the forest. Direwolves and most of the beasts around here hate this blade. I bathed it in the blood
of the Northern Mountains’ Grizzler.”

Yuki froze, standing still. Her whole body tensed at the sudden kindness the girl was showing. The only thing moving from her body were her eyelids,
blinking fast. It was like the girl just read her mind about getting back home.

“If you go on a straight line from here, you will be out of the forest. If you are unsure on where to go, just look up and walk to the opposite direction of
the Northern Star.”

Yuki was still silent.

“If you don’t know the Northern Star, then-.”

“I – I know! I’m a princess! I am well educated!”

The girl stopped talking but kept her hand up, holding the dagger. Yuki hesitated, contemplating, but she finally took the dagger. The dagger had some
weight to it and when Yuki observed it closer, it had complex carvings on the sheath.

“Now you can go, Prin-,” the girl stopped midway when a voice echoed in the air.

“Yuki!”

Yuki snapped her head back. “Mari-chan! Mari-chan!” she shouted, “I’m here!”

Mariko came out of the trees, sweating and panting. Her face was filled with worry as she ran to Yuki and hugged her tightly. “Oh, Yuki! Yuki! Yuki!”

Yuki wrapped her hands around Mariko, breathing in her familiar scent.

“Are you okay?” Mariko let go of the Princess. “Are you hurt anywhere?”

“No, no, I’m okay,” Yuki could finally smile after reunited with Mariko. “She saved me.”

Yuki turned around facing the lake, about to show her savior to Mariko but the girl was no longer there. “Eh?”

“Who?”

“There was…,” Yuki looked around the lake, to the forest and then back to the lake. “Remember that someone I saw at the party, on the tree behind the castle? It was her… she saved me.”

Mariko pulled her eyebrows together. The same girl she saw just before they entered the forest?

“She gave me this dagger. She said she bathed this in Grizzler’s blood so the beasts of the forest will not dare to come near me.”

“Grizzler’s blood,” Mariko repeated Yuki. Her eyes were still scanning the lake and the forest. “So she’s someone with skill, a good skill.”

“Why? Are Grizzlers bad?”

“Very bad.”

“I didn’t get to say thank you. Instead, I threatened her with a twig,” Yuki smiled.

“No, Princess. She might not be a good person. She might be an enemy.”

Yuki didn’t deny what Mariko said, the girl in the animal cloak was suspicious indeed. Though the sheer act of kindness she showed when she gave Yuki
the dagger clouded the judgment of the Princess. Her mind was filled with the caring face of the girl.

**

A girl with pink coat was skipping her way in the forest, humming to a nursery rhyme. She was holding an apple on her right hand, throwing it up and
down as she skipped. The girl stopped right before she reached the lake and she turned her head up to a tall tree. On top of a branch, way high near
the top of the tree, she found the person she was looking for.

The girl smiled and she hopped up, kicking her legs like she was jumping on an empty pedestal, and then she walked in the air. She made her way up
to the branch and tapped the person sitting on it. “Hello.”

The girl on the branch jolted in surprise, dropping the hood from her animal cloak down, revealing a stunned face.

“What are you doing?” asked the girl in pink.

“Go away.”

The girl narrowed her eyes, looking at the lakeside where two girls were talking. “Oh, you’re looking at them? Which one? The tall one or the one with
the good body?”

“I’m not looking at no one!”

“Oh, come on, Sae. I know you.”

“Shut up.”

“It’s the Princess, huh? You saved her from the direwolves using your limited ability. What a waste.”

“Go away, Mayu.”

“I thought you hate them royalties.”

The girl in the animal cloak stayed silent.

“So you’re saving her is what? Compassion? Or you simply have a crush on her?”

“Please, Mayu. Can you bug someone else?”

“I’m sorry, Sae, but you are one interesting human to tease.”

“And you are one annoying Spirit.”

i have been gone for a very long time i don't know if anyone would still be interested in things i posted
but i have some free time in my hand and i want to share hecate's fic again  :cow:

here you go

4

By dawn, the Castle of Amachi had quieted down and it seemed like the Revolutionary Army attack was just a nightmare. They only suffered a small
amount of casualties and those who left unscathed were rebuilding the destroyed main gate. The King’s guests left the castle with not a single scratch on
them. Every one of them went home with full protection.

After taking off his battle robe, the King went down his room. He walked out of the castle through the main entrance, going down the castle’s steps and
headed down to the East Gate. As he went through it, he saw Prince Ezra was standing at the roadside, looking out to the forest behind the castle.

“And here I thought I would be the only one waiting for my daughter to return, Prince,” said the King.

Ezra turned her head to the King, bowing a little. “I guess you are not the only one worried, My Lord.”

“It seems so.”

The King crossed his arms, relaxing his body as he waited with Ezra for Princess Yuki to return from the forest. The promise was to come back to the
castle at dawn if the flag of the kingdom was still on the castle’s roof and it was still there, unharmed and untouched.

The King looked at Ezra from the corner of his eyes. The man was shorter than him but that was because King Kashiwagi was abnormally tall so the
Prince’s height was not a flaw. He had guts, he jumped into war with him and he showed genuine love for his daughter. This man would make a fine
husband for Yuki.

It was time, the King thought. It was time for him to pass on his throne into someone else and this Prince from the Eastern Regions could be the man
for it. It will not only make him the new ruler of the Far Eastern Terrains along with her daughter Yuki, but also, their marriage will strengthen the bond
between the two territories. Something Kashiwagi Souryuu had been dreaming forever.

After a long wait, the Princess and her Dachi appeared from the forest. They were walking hand in hand toward the East Gate and when Prince Ezra saw
the Princess, he almost dash out to her. He didn’t, remembering that the King was next to him. He politely smiled and took a step back when the King
hugged his daughter.

Ezra was satisfied to see the smile – although it was probably forced – that the Princess gave him when she and her Dachi walked him by. He followed
them into the East Gate, into the castle until the Princess and her Dachi disappeared into their room. Ezra could finally let out a breath of relieve.

The King tapped Ezra on the shoulder, thanking him with a smile and then he turned in into his chamber as well. The Prince lingered in the hall, looking
at the Princess’ room, for a second longer before he finally entered his own room, the royal guest chamber. He slept with the image of the Princess’
smile in his mind.

**

Kashiwagi Yuki lied on her bed after a short hot water bath, thinking about the girl she met in the forest. She didn’t get to know her name or even got to
say thank you and it left a lot of questions in her head. Who was she? What was she doing at forest? How did she save Yuki from the direwolves? What
was her name?

Those questions burned Yuki and she was sleepless for the rest of the night. It was not until she saw the sunrise from the eastern horizon and the
questions in her became too much to handle, her eyes finally let her exhausted body rest. She had one resolution made up that night: she have to see
the girl again.

**

Fe’ora was divided into six territories: Western Territories, Southern Islands, Northern Mountains, Central Domain, Eastern Regions and Far Eastern
Terrains. These six territories were encircling the Sea of Selene.

The Far Eastern Terrains were known as a land of battle. Since a long time ago, six kingdoms in the Far Eastern Terrains had been on an endless war.
The only neutral place in the land was a small town named Hakuyama. Hakuyama had been collecting refugees from the losing kingdoms, giving
shelters and foods for them until one day they felt like they had enough. The town couldn’t take more refugees and still committed to the idea that they
will not join the war. They shut themselves out of the rest of Fe’ora.

Years later, the Kingdom of Amachi grew stronger. It led a series of successful campaign and conquered half of the Far Eastern Territories. The
Kingdom of Amachi then turned its attention to Hakuyama, the isolated town. They pried it open, invading the place and put the capital of Amachi in
Hakuyama’s land. After the invasion to Hakuyama, a small number of men started to revolt, demanding their land back. They were called the
Revolutionary Army.

Most of the Revolutionary Army’s members were the strong idealists from Hakuyama, some other were soldiers and knights from the kingdoms Amachi
defeated at war. The Revolutionary Army was single handedly led by a man named Miyazawa Touji. He put up a fight against Amachi and even though
they were not winning, they clearly made a name for themselves as the independent force capable of going toe to toe with the biggest kingdom in the
Far Eastern Territory. Until one day, Kashiwagi Souryuu, the King of Amachi, got his hand on Miyazawa Touji and sentenced him to death. The
Revolutionary Army lost their fangs. They were drifting apart and separated, only a few of them remains, living in outcast, while the Kingdom of Amachi
grew even stronger over the years.

**

A small explosion shook the earth of Akihabara Plain; a residency built by the Revolutionary Army on the riverside behind the Mountain of Akihabara. It
woke Yuuko up from her slumber. Rubbing her tired eyes, she pushed the window on the wall next to her bed open. The sunlight blinded her for a
second, made her turn her head away and grumbled before she could finally stretched her eyes fully.

The Plain was silent with most of the people living there were still inside their houses. Last night’s failed attempt of taking Hakuyama back had put a
somewhat depressing atmosphere in the place.

No smoke was looming from the chimney of the small and simple houses between Akihabara Plain’s hills. Only a few women were walking up from the
river with water basin were seen that morning. Their faces were painted with disappointment.

Yuuko’s eyes found Tomomi standing in the middle of the river, submerging her lower body in the current. Her shoulders were sloping down like she
had the weight of the world on them. Yuuko decided to step down her bed and went out her house.

The morning breeze was filled with the scent of defeat and death, battle scars from last night’s unsuccessful raid, as Yuuko made her way to the river,
approaching her best friend.

“You should be resting, Tomochin!” said Yuuko as she crouched down on the river bank, playing with the frozen water with her fingers.

Tomomi raised her head to Yuuko. She walked to the riverside to sit on the grass next to her friend. “I need to be stronger, Yuuko.”

“But you also need rest.”

“You saw how weak I am last night, Yuuko. I casted two fire Nous and I can barely stay awake after.”

“You casted two huge Nous, that was impressive.”

“I passed out.”

“And panting like a woman in labor, but it’s fine,” Yuuko said. “You will get stronger. Right now, you need to rest.”

Tomomi hung her head back down. For quite a long moment she had not say anything and when she did, her voice was heavy and burdened. “Aoki-san
died because of me. A lot of us died back there. If I were stronger, I could take down that Mage.”

“You will, Tomochin. I believe in you. In the meantime, go back to sleep and you can go back on practicing your Nou skill. Okay?” Yuuko gave Tomomi
a warm smile, tapped her head with her palm gently to cheer the girl.

“I don’t like it when you treat me like ten years old.”

“Nah. I know you like it when I do this,” Yuuko brushed Tomomi’s hair and stopped her fingers on the girl’s shoulder. “Trust me. You will get stronger in
time.”

Tomomi puffed her cheeks. Yuuko was the only one who treated her like a child but she didn’t mind it, even though she kept on saying that she hated it.

“Yuuko.”

“Yes?”

“It’s today.”

“What is?”

“Haruna’s birthday.”

Yuuko’s face turned darker, sadder. “Ah....”

“I’ll change my clothes.”

“Um, let’s go after you get some more sleep, Tomochin,” Yuuko said as she stood up. “I’ll wake you up in a while.”

Tomomi nodded and got on her feet. “Okay.”

**

The Amachi Castle was not so different from the Akihabara Plain. The castle was a lot quieter than usual when the maids were tip toeing around in the
hall so they will not wake the exhausted soldiers and knights in their quarters. Some of them were on the edges, fidgeting at every small noise or
movements, traumatized by last night’s attack.

It was rather gloomy but Mariko the Dachi liked it that way. It was not that she hated merriment but the silence that morning fit the mood in her heart
perfectly. Today was a special day.

She entered the dining room for breakfast with the thought of being alone, but she found Prince Ezra was already there. The Prince was eating bread
and corn soup on the long dining table all by himself.

Ezra rose from his chair to bow, “Good morning.”

Mariko bowed back without words. She sat on a chair on the different side of the table, a few seats away from the Prince.

“I apologize for eating before you. King Kashiwagi told me to go down on my own.”

“It’s quite alright,” Mariko said.

A maid brought a glass of water to Mariko and she drank it all up in one gulp. Then, the maid served Mariko the same meal Ezra was having.

The Castle of Amachi was a quiet place to live. The nobles living in the castle with the rights to eat at the royal dining table were only the King, his
daughter and the Dachi. Apart from them, no one would dare to enter the place. The fact that Prince Ezra was there was proof enough for Mariko to
think that the King had already thought of the man as worthy to be included in the inner circle of the family. He was serious about the wedding between
Ezra and Yuki.

“I heard the Princess had quite of a journey last night,” Ezra spoke, a little bit loud so his voice would reach Mariko at the end of the table.

Mariko waited until the maid had finished serving her food before answering the Prince. “Yes, quite an adventure.”

“I heard she met someone in the forest. And you as well, Dachi-san.”

Mariko ignored the Prince. Not because she didn’t like him but she wanted to spend the meal time in quiet. She cut a bread with a knife and dipped it
into a bowl of soup, indicating that she wanted to be left alone.

“How exactly is this mysterious girl looks like?”

Mariko swallowed the bread and turned to the Prince. “She was wearing an animal cloak. She has a sword and quite agile. I saw her jumping between
trees like monkey.”

“How about the rose insignia on her neck?”

Mariko stopped chewing her food for a moment before she replied. “I didn’t see the insignia. The Princess saw it.”

“What do you think of it?”

“I think nothing of it.”

“I know what the rose insignia represents.”

The Dachi casually continued her meal, trying not to be dragged down in the current of the conversation.

“I am sure the King aware of this as well.”

“The King,” Mariko had to stop Ezra from talking, “has so much on his plate right now, no time to play with old legend.”

“But it is not a legend,” Ezra said. “He had to kill the man with that insignia once, the man who once led the Revolutionary Army.”

“The girl in the forest with that insignia is probably no one. She saved the Princess.”

“But it does not mean that she is our ally either.”

“How can I be sure that you are our ally? You are only here for the Princess’ hand in marriage, yet you seem to be overly concerned with our personal
issues.”

Ezra put his bread knife down, set his plates further to the front and put both arms on the table, leaning in toward Mariko. “It is true that I am here for
the Princess, I am not denying that. But I also think highly of this kingdom. I know what the King is trying to achieve, Dachi, and I fully support him in
this matter. Now, about the girl with the rose insignia, I would be very worried and be on all alerts if I were you. Because there is no one in Fe’ora who
courageous enough to carve such insignia on her body is to be taken lightly. So, Dachi, I would not pass her up as just ‘no one.’”

Mariko let out a long breath and continued her meal. “Thank you for the warning. I know what to do and I am sure the King knows what to do.”

Ezra nodded and returned to his own meal. The two people in that room spent another minute in silent. Mariko understood that the intention of Ezra was
noble and she didn’t blame him for talking in such threatening manner, out of his place. She understood that the rose insignia symbolized a great ability,
once possessed by the leader of the Revolutionary Army years ago. Mariko had to find out more about the insignia. Like Ezra said, she had to be on all
alerts.

A maid came into the dining room with a wine bottle and two glasses in a basket. “Here you go, Dachi.”

“Thank you,” Mariko said to the maid. “Give the King my regards, for all his understanding and courtesy every year.”

“Of course, Milady,” the maid smiled at Mariko and took her plate.

Mariko stood up and bowed to Ezra. “I must take my leave here, Prince. I have somewhere I need to be.”

Ezra watched Mariko carried the basket out of the dining table and he waited until the sounds of her footsteps were no longer echoing to the ceiling. He
turned at the maid and asked her, “Where is the Dachi going with that wine?”

“Today is a birthday of someone very special to her, Your Highness,” answered the maid with a smile.

“Her… lover?”

“No,” the maid politely shook her head. She walked pass Ezra and bowed, “just an old friend.”

Ezra raised his eyebrows and let the maid went away to the kitchen, leaving him with his thoughts and the rest of his breakfast. The Dachi had a best
friend was unexpected for Ezra. Judging by the personality, Ezra thought that no one could get close to Mariko except the Princess. He was wrong,
apparently. The Dachi had a history.

By dawn, the Castle of Amachi had quieted down and it seemed like the Revolutionary Army attack was just a nightmare. They only suffered a small amount of casualties and those who left unscathed were rebuilding the destroyed main gate. The King’s guests left the castle with not a single scratch on them. Every one of them went home with full protection.

After taking off his battle robe, the King went down his room. He walked out of the castle through the main entrance, going down the castle’s steps and headed down to the East Gate.

The promise was to come back to the castle at dawn if the flag of the kingdom was still on the castle’s roof and it was still there, unharmed and untouched.

The King looked at Ezra from the corner of his eyes. The man was shorter than him but that was because King Kashiwagi was abnormally tall so the Prince’s height was not a flaw. He had guts, he jumped into war with him and he showed genuine love for his daughter. This man would make a fine husband for Yuki.

It was time, the King thought. It was time for him to pass on his throne into someone else and this Prince from the Eastern Regions could be the man for it. It will not only make him the new ruler of the Far Eastern Terrains along with her daughter Yuki, but also, their marriage will strengthen the bond between the two territories. Something Kashiwagi Souryuu had been dreaming forever.

After a long wait, the Princess and her Dachi appeared from the forest. They were walking hand in hand toward the East Gate and when Prince Ezra saw the Princess, he almost dash out to her. He didn’t, remembering that the King was next to him. He politely smiled and took a step back when the King hugged his daughter.

Ezra was satisfied to see the smile – although it was probably forced – that the Princess gave him when she and her Dachi walked him by. He followed them into the East Gate, into the castle until the Princess and her Dachi disappeared into their room. Ezra could finally let out a breath of relieve.

The King tapped Ezra on the shoulder, thanking him with a smile and then he turned in into his chamber as well. The Prince lingered in the hall, looking at the Princess’ room, for a second longer before he finally entered his own room, the royal guest chamber. He slept with the image of the Princess’ smile in his mind.

**

Kashiwagi Yuki lied on her bed after a short hot water bath, thinking about the girl she met in the forest. She didn’t get to know her name or even got to say thank you and it left a lot of questions in her head. Who was she? What was she doing at forest? How did she save Yuki from the direwolves? What was her name?

Those questions burned Yuki and she was sleepless for the rest of the night. It was not until she saw the sunrise from the eastern horizon and the questions in her became too much to handle, her eyes finally let her exhausted body rest. She had one resolution made up that night: she have to see the girl again.

**

Fe’ora was divided into six territories: Western Territories, Southern Islands, Northern Mountains, Central Domain, Eastern Regions and Far Eastern Terrains. These six territories were encircling the Sea of Selene.

The Far Eastern Terrains were known as a land of battle. Since a long time ago, six kingdoms in the Far Eastern Terrains had been on an endless war. The only neutral place in the land was a small town named Hakuyama. Hakuyama had been collecting refugees from the losing kingdoms, giving shelters and foods for them until one day they felt like they had enough. The town couldn’t take more refugees and still committed to the idea that they will not join the war. They shut themselves out of the rest of Fe’ora.

Years later, the Kingdom of Amachi grew stronger. It led a series of successful campaign and conquered half of the Far Eastern Territories. The Kingdom of Amachi then turned its attention to Hakuyama, the isolated town. They pried it open, invading the place and put the capital of Amachi in Hakuyama’s land. After the invasion to Hakuyama, a small number of men started to revolt, demanding their land back. They were called the Revolutionary Army.

Most of the Revolutionary Army’s members were the strong idealists from Hakuyama, some other were soldiers and knights from the kingdoms Amachi defeated at war. The Revolutionary Army was single handedly led by a man named Miyazawa Touji. He put up a fight against Amachi and even though they were not winning, they clearly made a name for themselves as the independent force capable of going toe to toe with the biggest kingdom in the Far Eastern Territory. Until one day, Kashiwagi Souryuu, the King of Amachi, got his hand on Miyazawa Touji and sentenced him to death. The Revolutionary Army lost their fangs. They were drifting apart and separated, only a few of them remains, living in outcast, while the Kingdom of Amachi grew even stronger over the years.

**

A small explosion shook the earth of Akihabara Plain; a residency built by the Revolutionary Army on the riverside behind the Mountain of Akihabara. It woke Yuuko up from her slumber. Rubbing her tired eyes, she pushed the window on the wall next to her bed open. The sunlight blinded her for a second, made her turn her head away and grumbled before she could finally stretched her eyes fully.

The Plain was silent with most of the people living there were still inside their houses. Last night’s failed attempt of taking Hakuyama back had put a somewhat depressing atmosphere in the place.

No smoke was looming from the chimney of the small and simple houses between Akihabara Plain’s hills. Only a few women were walking up from the river with water basin were seen that morning. Their faces were painted with disappointment.

Yuuko’s eyes found Tomomi standing in the middle of the river, submerging her lower body in the current. Her shoulders were sloping down like she had the weight of the world on them. Yuuko decided to step down her bed and went out her house.

The morning breeze was filled with the scent of defeat and death, battle scars from last night’s unsuccessful raid, as Yuuko made her way to the river, approaching her best friend.

“Aoki-san died because of me. A lot of us died back there. If I were stronger, I could take down that Mage.”

“You will, Tomochin. I believe in you. In the meantime, go back to sleep and you can go back on practicing your Nou skill. Okay?” Yuuko gave Tomomi a warm smile, tapped her head with her palm gently to cheer the girl.

“I don’t like it when you treat me like ten years old.”

“Nah. I know you like it when I do this,” Yuuko brushed Tomomi’s hair and stopped her fingers on the girl’s shoulder. “Trust me. You will get stronger in time.”

The castle was a lot quieter than usual when the maids were tip toeing around in the hall so they will not wake the exhausted soldiers and knights in their quarters. Some of them were on the edges, fidgeting at every small noise or movements, traumatized by last night’s attack.

It was rather gloomy but Mariko the Dachi liked it that way. It was not that she hated merriment but the silence that morning fit the mood in her heart perfectly. Today was a special day.

She entered the dining room for breakfast with the thought of being alone, but she found Prince Ezra was already there. The Prince was eating bread and corn soup on the long dining table all by himself.

Then, the maid served Mariko the same meal Ezra was having.

thanks everyone for reading :)
here's chap 5

5

Just outside the forest behind the castle, Yuki was standing with the dagger she received from the girl with the animal cloak she met last night. She took
a deep breath before taking the dagger out of its sheath. The blade was flawlessly white. Remembering how the girl said she bathed the blade in a
Grizzler’s blood, Yuki put the dagger to her nose, sniffing it, hoping for a rotten stench but the blade smelled of nothing.

After mustering up much courage, Yuki stepped into the forest. She moved up to the north in a straight line because she did the opposite last night
when she was returning home from the lake deep inside the forest. Her heart was racing as she went deeper; the traumatic experience of meeting two
direwolves was still imprinted very vividly in her mind.

She clenched the dagger tighter, putting it in front of her chest. So far, she met nothing but some monkeys on the trees. The monkeys took a few
glances at her before running away. Probably because of the dagger Yuki was carrying, it was said that no beast would come near it.

North she went and she had been walking for about an hour already. Yuki started to worry. The trees were getting thicker and bigger, the huge leaves
creating shadows and made the forest quite dark even in the morning. She kept on walking to the direction she believed was north. After another hour
of walking, she was sure that she was lost. She started to panic.

It was a mistake coming there alone, she should have come with Mariko. She didn’t stop walking though, she ventured deeper into the forest, hoping
that she would see a glimpse of water from the lake near the border of the Northern Mountains. But when her feet started to ache, she found herself
sitting down in exhaustion under an old tree, nowhere near the lake.

Still holding her dagger, Yuki sobbed. She worried that she might not be able to get out of the forest forever. Then, she heard a rustling from the
bushes behind her. She stood up, holding her dagger up. Her heartbeat rose into an uncontrollable rhythm, sweat ran down her spine. The rustling
sound got louder and in Yuki’s head, she was imagining a huge beast was looking at her ferociously, hungrily.

The rustling sound got more frequent, followed by a series of animal’s legs thumping on the ground. Yuki moved backward in panic as the sound of a
stampede coming her way. She hit her back on a tree and yelped out in horror when a herd of flare deer jumped out of a bush, running to her direction.
Yuki crouched down, putting the dagger high above her head. The pack of deer circled her around, running away from something.

Yuki stood up when her surroundings became quiet again. Her shoulders were still rising up and down, still surprised. Yuki saw something moving in
front of her, far inside the thick forest. There was someone there, crouching down and grabbing a dead deer, carrying it on the shoulder and walking
away. Yuki recognized the white animal cloak and she smiled in relieved. She found what she was looking for.

**

Sae dropped a dead deer on the grass close enough to the lake. The deer looked delicious and it could be breakfast and lunch, or maybe even dinner,
judging by the size of it. She could cut up the front legs for breakfast, the body for lunch and the hinds for dinner. She would not need the head. She
would only use the oil from the flare deer’s brain to light fire.

Sae ruffled her belt, looking for a dagger to cut the deer with but she could not find it. She shed her cloak and checked on the pocket inside. Still no
dagger.

“You gave it to the Princess you saved last night, Sae.”

Sae jolted up in surprise. “Mayu!”

“Hello,” Mayu, the Spirit of the Forest, was crouching next to Sae, wearing her bright pink coat. “Looks delicious.”

“Can you not surprise me, Mayu? I will have a heart condition soon if you keep this up.”

“You will be fine,” Mayu touched the dead flare dear. “I want its heart.”

“No. The heart is mine.”

“You had the heart last time.”

“That was not a flare deer. It was a tree rabbit.”

“Doesn’t matter. I get the heart this time.”

“You could have its kidney.”

“Again?!” Mayu whined.

Sae sighed. “Okay, fine. You can have the heart.”

“Alright!” Mayu chirped, hopping on her toes.

Sae took out her sword out of the sheath.

“Ha.”

Sae raised her head to Mayu. “What?”

“What what?”

“You just gasped.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“You did. Just when I took out Koguro.”

“It wasn’t me.”

“Then who?”

Sae turned her head around while Mayu lifted her face from the dead flare deer. They both saw the same thing: the Princess of Amachi was standing
behind Sae, her hand on her mouth and she looked so surprised.

“You have company,” said Mayu.

**

The market of Hakuyama was undisturbed by last night’s raid at the castle. The usual morning activites were carried out ordinarily like nothing
happened the day before. Although, Mariko noticed a few changes in the eyes of some citizens. A handful of them were looking at Mariko in fear and
wary. If Mariko had to guess, those people who looked at her in fear were probably belong the Revolutionary Army.

Hakuyama were filled with incognito Revolutionaries and that explain why the town were so quiet last night. They were working together with the
Revolutionary Army to bring King Kashiwagi Souryuu down. Mariko didn’t blame them, it was the kingdom’s fault for invading the city, drawing the
citizens out of their homes to make stables, weapon factories and soldiers housing compounds.

A middle aged lady was bargaining for a sack of potatoes with a merchant at the market. Mariko knew her back from when Mariko was still nobody, just
another girl from Hakuyama, an ordinary citizen.

Mariko knew half the people of Hakuyama if not most of them. She was one of them once, but now, those people who knew the Dachi turned against her. A lot of them were looking at her in despise, grudging against her. Every time she walked along the town, she could felt the piercing gaze behind
her back. Painful but Mariko always found a way to endure it. Her purpose to the world was bigger and far too noble to let her dawdle on her home
town’s hatred.

She arrived at the town’s gate and she turned to the direction of a hill just outside Hakuyama. The path to the hill was decorated with trees on both sides, giving shades for travelers going its way. A small wooden gate stood at the end of the path and it was where Mariko was going.

She clenched her basket of wine as she went up the slope. Behind the wooden gate, Mariko was greeted by tombstones. Wind blew her hair and the
feeling of nostalgia came to her, making her steps a little bit heavier. She entered a smaller pathway between the graves and stopped in front of a
tombstone. It was not as old as the other; she could still read the name carved on it very clearly. Dead leaves from the trees at the cemetery were
piling on top of it and Mariko gently brushed them off with her fingers. She crouched down to put her hand on the writings. She felt it with her skin and
she smiled.

“Happy birthday, Haruna.”

**

“Will she going to be okay?”

“I don’t know.”

“Give her a mouth to mouth breath.”

“Ew, no.”

“You will probably destroy it.”

“Her.”

“What?”

“She’s a lady.”

“How do you know if it’s a girl?”

“Her tail looks like a skirt.”

Mariko, Tomomi and Yuuko laughed their heart out. Haruna pouted and gave the three girls a smack on their arms.

“I am being serious here. Save her!”

A small bird was lying helpless on Yuuko’s palm. They found it lying on the ground, right under a tall tree, gasping for air. It seemed like she fell off its nest from the top of the tree before it could learn how to fly.

“Do you know how to treat a dying bird, Mari-chan?” asked Yuuko to Mariko.

The taller girl crossed her arms, thinking. “We could take it to the clinic. See if they can do something about it.”

“Okay,” Yuuko stood up, carrying the bird on her palm.

Haruna was walking right behind Yuuko, looking at the bird closely. “Don’t drop it, don’t drop it.”

“I won’t, Haruna. Stop breathing down my neck.”

“Because you’re clumsy, Yuuko, you always-,” Haruna tripped on a rock, bumped into Yuuko and the bird slipped off her palm.

“Watch it!” Tomomi tried to grab the bird before it hit the ground but she was too late. The bird hit a rock and stopped moving.

“No!” Haruna crouched down, touching the bird with her index finger. “You killed her!”

“You bumped into me!” Yuuko said.

“But you didn’t have to drop her!”

“I didn’t mean to drop her!”

Haruna poked the bird with her finger a few times. “Poor Amane.”

“You gave her a name already?”Mariko raised her eyebrows in surprised.

“We need a name for her grave.”

 “We’re burying it?”

“Amane! She has a name and, yes, we will give it a proper burial!” Haruna jumped up, glaring at her three friends.

Yuuko sighed and then she turned at Mariko and Tomomi. Both girls shrugged.

“Fine,” Yuuko caved in to Haruna’s childish request.

“Good. Grab her.”

“Me? Why don’t you take it?”

“No,” Haruna shivered. “It’s disgusting.”

**
Mariko felt her heart heavy with nostalgic feeling. Her hand reached for the bottle of wine in the basket. Haruna loved wine. She always said that she could live only with wine. Mariko stood up after opening the cork of the wine. She poured the wine into a glass and put the glass on top of Haruna’s tombstone before she poured one for herself.

“I walked across the Far Eastern Terrains, I crossed the Eastern Regions borders and I even climbed the Northern Mountains. You were right, Grizzlers
can hide themselves in the snow. I am sorry I didn’t believe you then.”

Mariko chuckled as the memories of her with Haruna came back to her mind.

“Yuuko and Tomomi are fine, by the way.” After saying their names, Mariko took a pause and suddenly her heart felt like it was burdened. “They have
changed. No. I have changed. And probably not in the way they wanted me to be. They hate me now. Yuuko even raised her sword against me. It was
crazy.”

Mariko raised her glass and sipped the wine.

“If they see what I have seen, Haruna, if I can make them feel what I have felt. If they would see what is happening out there, would they become my
friends again?”

Mariko turned her head around when she heard footsteps approaching. Yuuko and Tomomi were standing behind her, a few arms away.

“Yuuko, Tomomi.”

Mariko stepped aside when Yuuko walked to Haruna’s tombstone. She brushed the stone gently, putting one cabbage wrapped in a freshly washed cloth
and closed her eyes, praying. Tomomi looked at Mariko for a moment and she looked away just as fast. She crouched down and prayed with Yuuko.
After a few moments, Yuuko stood up and turned around, walking back the way she came. Tomomi gave a short glance at Mariko and then she followed
Yuuko.

“You will not talk to me at all?” Mariko spoke.

Tomomi stopped and snapped her head at Mariko. “You have chosen your side, Mariko. And if it’s not for Haruna’s birthday, I would burn you with my
Nou already.”

“Let me explain,” Mariko said, half pleading. “I am doing this for a reason, Tomochin.”

“Don’t call me that.”

“If you see what I have seen on my journey, you will understand.”

“The journey has changed you. That is everything I need to know,” Tomomi walked away again, catching up to Yuuko.

“Wait! Tomochin! Yuuko!”

Yuuko stopped on her tracks, turned around and glared at Mariko. “Thank you for the wine. She’d love it.”

Mariko held her breath, waiting for Yuuko to complete her sentence.

“I know she will be happy looking at us together again like today but next time I see you, Mariko, it will be in the battlefield. And I will not hold back.”

With that said, Yuuko and Tomomi left the cemetery. Mariko could only sigh at the challenge. Yuuko and Tomomi were blinded by their anger. Mariko
would give anything in the world to turn back the time. She would bring them on her journey of Fe’ora, make them see what she had seen, change their
minds. But it was too late and Mariko knew that nothing could fix their friendship no more.

The Colored Swords of Acchan were rare swords that can cut through anything. The legend said that Acchan was once a human, a great blacksmith,
forged weapons for great warriors and knights. She died in the hand of her own friend, stabbed with the weapon she forged for her. Her spirit lingered
on because of her untimely death, grudging the world for eternity.

To earn one of Acchan’s swords, one had to venture into the spirit realm, facing their biggest nightmares and fears before they could meet her. Then,
Acchan would give them tests to determine whether they were worthy enough to wield her swords. After passing the excruciating steps, Acchan would
forge a sword from the essence of the world, one fitting their personality and granted them the ability to cut through anything.

There were only a few of them in Fe’ora who owned the swords and three of them lived in the Far Eastern Terrains, and the Princess of Amachi had met
them all. One was belong to her faithful Dachi, Shinoda Mariko. She carried a purple colored sword named Shikou. The second sword belonged to one
of the Revolutionaries, Ooshima Yuuko. She owned a red sword which name was unknown to Yuki. And the third sword, a black sword, was in the hands
of her savior. Its name was Koguro.

The story behind the colored swords was terrifying enough that Yuki had no courage to ask her Dachi how she came to possess such a thing. But
everyone should understand that anyone with a colored sword is not someone who can be taken lightly. And so Yuki came to a conclusion that her
savior was not an ordinary person.

“I’m sorry. Your sword startled me,” Yuki said.

Sae put Koguro back in her sheath as she looked at Yuki in confusion. “What are you doing here?”

“I – um, I didn’t get to say thank you for saving me last night,” Yuki smiled awkwardly. “I came here to say thanks.”

Sae took the dead flare deer by the leg and dragged it away, “Go home, Princess.”

“No, wait,” Yuki followed her. “I don’t know your name.”

Sae ignored the Princess.

“Hey, wait.”

“Her name is Sae, Princess.”

Yuki turned around. A girl with pink coat was standing behind her, smiling at her. She walked up to Yuki and crossed her arms. “Her name is Sae.”

“Sae…,” Yuki repeated the name.

“And I am Mayu,” the girl in pink coat smiled wider.

“Ah, nice to meet you. You and Sae… live in this forest?”

“Yes.”

“Mayu!” Sae called Mayu.

Mayu ran after Sae and walked next to her.

“Do not get involved with her.”

“She’s quite a beauty.”

“Just don’t, Mayu.”

“Your type of girl.”

“I don’t have a type!”

Yuki walked behind the two girls, keeping a safe distance. Sae didn’t seem to like her so she had to take it slow.

“So what are you going to do with that deer?” asked Yuki.

Sae did not respond to the question, she continued on dragging the deer away from the Princess.

“We’re going to eat it. Breakfast,” Mayu spoke.

Sae rolled her eyes at Mayu’s attitude.

“Oh, you have a kitchen somewhere around here?”

“Nope. We will just going to roast it in fire.”

“Eh? But the meat will still be raw.”

“Don’t worry. We will roast it good. You are welcome to join us.”

“Mayu!” Sae scolded Mayu.

“Oh, great!” Yuki chirped. “I haven’t eaten breakfast yet.”

“No!” Sae turned to Yuki.

“What? Why?”

“I don’t want you around.”

“That is rude.”

“Go home!”

“Hey!”

“Go home!”

“I am the Princess and I am ordering you to let me eat with you!”

“Ooh,” Mayu grinned at Yuki’s words.

“You are nothing but a spoiled girl to me,” Sae coldly responded and it made Yuki angry. In her whole life, she had never been insulted by anyone
before, and she wouldn’t have it. Yuki turned around in anger, stomping her way back to the forest, leaving the lake.

She took out the dagger in her and clutched on it tightly. How dare Sae talked to her that way, she thought. Yuki screamed in frustration and stabbed a
tree with the dagger, “Arrogant idiot!”

**

Sae cut off the deer’s head in one swing of her sword. She poured the brain liquid on to a pile of dry woods and struck two stones to create a spark. A
fire lit up and Sae threw the dead dear’s body into it.

“That is why I hate royalties. Thinks she could do anything because she’s a princess. What a joke.”

Sae sat on a log, eyes to the dancing fire in front of her, huffing in anger. Mayu sat across Sae, crossing her legs on the grass. She observed Sae’s face
and she cackled, amused by it.

“What?”

Mayu shook her head.

“Don’t give me that look, Mayu.”

“I am not giving you any look.”

Sae clacked her tongue and returned her attention to the deer. She poked it around, flipping it with her sword furiously. Then, a rustling sound came
from the side, attracting Sae and Mayu’s attention.

Yuki was standing there, dagger in hand. “You know what you are? You are an arrogant girl. Just because you saved me last night doesn’t mean you
can act so highly about it. I will not have you talk down on me! And like it or not, as long as you live in this forest, behind my castle, I am your Princess!
So show some respect!”

Sae stood up, clenching on her sword. “What?”

“Yes. You are not so mighty, Sae,” Yuki continued, putting the stress on Sae’s name. “I take back my gratitude to you. You do not deserve such a
word.”

“I don’t need your gratitude.”

“Good! Because you are not getting one! And here,” Yuki threw the dagger on the ground. “I don’t need your dagger to get out of this forest! I can
manage on my own!”

“Ha!” Sae scoffed. “See if you can make it out alive from here, Princess.”

“Ugh! You are such a-,” Yuki couldn’t find another word to express her anger. She simply turned on her heels and went back into the forest, walking
hard, making loud noises with her footsteps, kicking anything on her track.

“You go ahead and get eaten by direwolves! Or worse, by crawlers!”

Yuki flinched when Sae mentioned crawlers. Crawlers were giant insects that live in old trees and fed on anything from rocks, leaves, even meat.

“And why would you care!?”

“Not in the very least!”

Yuki threw a pebble to Sae’s direction and continued on. She looked up to the sky and found the Northern Star. She won’t lose her way again, not after
her little fit to Sae. She will prove her that she could take care of herself and she was not spoiled, not one bit.

After a few minutes walking, she found herself walking through thick bushes. She beat around it in anger, making her way. Her foot stepped on a pool
of mud and she almost fell. She held on to a tree and pulled her foot up. Something was on her leg, black and shiny.

“Ouch,” Yuki grunted when a sting pain hit her leg. “Oh, no!”

A giant leech had sunk its teeth on Yuki’s skin. The Princess frantically waved her leg, trying to get it off. She grabbed a branch and poked the leech but
it stuck on her tightly. In a desperate attempt, she kicked a tree, smashing the leech on it. The blood sucking animal burst and spewed out sticky liquid
from its body.

Yuki took the dead leech between her fingers and threw it away, gagging on the smell. She stood up and walked again but she soon stopped. A lizard
was waiting for her just across the pool of mud. It was quite huge, about as big as a dog. When Yuki saw its red tongue, she held her breath. A fire
lizard – named so for its hot saliva.

The lizard crawled to Yuki’s direction. Yuki moved back slowly, very slowly as to not excite the lizard. The fire lizard opened up its mouth, revealing
small sharp teeth. It hung out its tongue and Yuki knew it was going to spit on her and eat her after her flesh was burn.

A white dagger fell right on the lizard’s head. The crawling creature shrieked and thrashed on the ground. Sae dropped down a tree and pulled the
dagger of its head just to stab it on the stomach, cutting its guts.

Yuki looked at Sae in fear, tears started to fill her eyes but she held it in, she gritted her teeth, hardened her jaws. Sae turned to her, wiping the blood
off the dagger on her cloak. She put the dagger out, pointing the handle to Yuki for her to hold.

“Say you don’t need me,” Sae said, face as cold as a winter lake. “You can’t do anything without me in this forest.”

Yuki couldn’t held in her anger anymore, she swung her hand across Sae’s face, and tears were no longer containable. She cried. “Idiot.”

Sae didn’t expect the slap, she was stunned. And Yuki wasn’t finished; she gave Sae another slap, harder than the first. “I could have died.” Yuki
snatched the dagger from Sae’s hand and she walked pass her, bumping her shoulder when she did.

From on top of a tree, Mayu was floating between the branches and leaves, looking down to the dumbfounded Sae. It was probably her first argument
with a stranger and not just an ordinary stranger. She bet to herself that Sae was traumatized by now. Mayu saw another side of Sae, something new,
something Mayu would never even guess could live inside her.

But that was good, perfect even. Mayu turned her attention to the crying Princess, stomping her way out of the forest. That girl could be the one Mayu
was looking for, the one who can save Sae from the gruesome end of fate she had chosen for herself. Princess Kashiwagi Yuki could be Miyazawa Sae’s
savior.
