Chapter 25


[Day After Theme Park Outing]

“Anyone remember what day it is?”

Sayumi bounded happily over to the others who were all stretched out in various positions in the members’ lounge area.

“Ermmm, 10 days to Asami-chan’s graduation?”

Makoto answered thoughtfully. Her head was moving up and down slowly in accordance to the rhythmic breathing of Konno whose stomach she was lying on.

“No.”

“It’s the day Nintendo’s latest game console launches?”

Ai offered helpfully. She remembered circling the date on her planner so she wouldn’t forget to place an order for it.

The daggers Sayumi shot from her eyes told her otherwise. Chuckling, Risa pressed the glass of orange juice she was holding to Ai so she could advert her eyes from the seething girl.

“Oh I know!”

Reina shouted eagerly and retrieved her legs from hanging over Risa’s to get into a kneeing position on the couch.

“It’s Yakiniku day at that restaurant we go to.”

“NO! It’s my birthday!”

Sayumi screamed in such a high-pitched tone that everyone had to rush and cover their ears before their poor eardrums sustained permanent damage.

“Ahhh it’s Shige-san’s birthday.”

Konno was the first to realize. Feeling apologetic for having forgotten the cute girl’s birthday, she thought of how to make amends.

“Mako-chan and I are going to the karaoke later. Why don’t you join us?”

“No thanks. I wouldn’t want to ruin your date with Mako-chan.”

“We could go have Yakiniku?”

“Or we could go get you that console. It has awesome functions.”

Nothing the girls said could cheer Sayumi up. She was now extremely depressed that everyone had forgotten her birthday.

Risa who had been keeping quiet all this time finally spoke up.

“Why don’t you accompany her Kamei?”

Nodding hard at Sayumi, Eri pinched her nose lovingly.

“I’ll celebrate with you.”

Not saying a word, Sayumi with her head hanging low, let Eri wrap her arms around her shoulders and lead her back to their rooms.

“You think the plan worked?”

“Fabulously.”

Reina winked and grinned widely. Everything was going according to plan.

Chapter 26


Everyone was talking in hush tones and Konno looked up at Makoto who was meddling with the light switch.

“I hope Shige-san wasn’t too upset by our little gag earlier.”

“She’ll be fine. I bet she’ll be really happy when she finds out we had everything planned”

The group had crowded together in one of the spare rooms of the apartment block, which was already decorated with bright streamers and colored paper over the past few days.

Now armed with balloons, light sticks, poppers and confetti, they lay in wait for the crucial moment.

Finally hearing footsteps approaching, everyone shushed up and rushed to huddle at their respective hiding places.

When the doorknob turned with a click and Eri pushed the door open, everyone jumped out and yelled at the top of their voices.

“SURPRISE!!!”

“Ai-chan, Gaki-san, Reina. Kon-chan and Mako-chan….”

Tears had formed in Sayumi’s eyes when she realized what was going on. All of the gokkies and rokkies had gathered together to create this surprise birthday party just for her.

“I’m so….touched. Thank you all…. so much.”

Running up to everyone, Sayumi grabbed anyone she could and enveloped them in a great big bear hug.

“Group hug!”

Eri shouted loudly and embraced Sayumi from behind completing the inter generation hug.

Between squeezes and kisses, tears and laughter, Sayumi stated in the most determined voice she could muster.

“This isn’t just a birthday party for me. It’s a party to celebrate us coming to know each other. It’s also a celebration to cheer on Kon-chan and Mako-chan for their approaching graduations.”

“Wow Sayu, that’s so… mature and sweet.”

Risa patted Sayumi’s head in a kindly gesture. She had done it once on Eri when she had been one of the fastest runners and won the track event at the Sports Festival and another time on Reina when she got off a roller coaster ride in a wreck on Scream CM.

Now it was the remaining rokkie’s turn to be recognized by it.

“Stop hitting on my Sayu will you.”

Eri pulled Sayumi closer to herself, all of a sudden being rather possessive.

“Ah someone is jealous.”

Konno put her hand to her mouth and tried to cover a wide grin that had appeared on her face.

“Oh come on Eririn, it would be nice to share.”

Ai nudged Eri in the ribs and placed a hand on Sayumi’s arm suggestively.

“Yep, sharing is caring you know.”

Risa couldn’t help but ssexy beast. It was rare of Ai to tease anyone ever. So for that reason alone she wouldn’t let slip the chance of chorusing with Ai.  



“Besides, we shared.”

Reina gestured to the three people involved in the ‘Ferris wheel escapades’ and struck a winking pose just for the heck of it.

“Not today. It’s Sayu’s special day so I’m not sharing her with anyone.”

Eri declared with her infamous slightly puffed up cheeks that she always did on the World Children’s Game segment.



Then tiptoeing slightly to reach the taller girl, Eri planted her own pouty lips onto Sayumi’s.

The world seemed to stop spinning as the group watched the duo in slience, lost in their own world. For Sayumi, this was the best birthday present she could ever receive - Kamei Eri.

Chapter 27


“Ahem!”

Makoto cleared her throat loudly and tapped her foot to get everyone’s undivided attention. Reluctantly, KameiShige broke their kiss and turned to face their senior.

“Well since the couple here already started demonstrating what we can do, let’s all have some fun tonight!”

Shouting at the top of her lungs in her usual genki voice, Makoto jumped animatedly around the others super hyped about the upcoming ‘fun night’.

“Wait wait, before we all lose ourselves, which I believe will happen soon enough, lets take a group photo.”

Whipping out the bulky Polaroid camera she had brought along, Risa ordered everybody to get together under the colorful streamers hanging from the ceiling.

“You’re still using that ancient thing?”

Reina poked at the camera in Gaki’s hands and didn’t bother to hide her bemused expression.

“Hey it works perfectly well. And it’s instant.”

Risa protested making a monkey face which included sticking her tongue out at Reina. Then pushing her towards the rest who had already gathered together, Risa rested the camera on a nearby table and set it to timer mode.

As the timer light on the camera started to flash a couple of times, Risa had an unexpected flash of  inspiration.

“Lets yell something other than boring old cheese.”

“Great idea!”

“Cool!”

With everyone for the idea, Risa told them her plan excitedly. When the final flash on the camera went off, the group of seven people was caught forever in a comical and sentimental picture that carried great memories.



[Risa’s Room Later That Night]

It was well into the wee hours of the morning when the gang split up and went back to rest in their respective rooms. Of course not everyone went back alone. But Risa did and left Ai and Reina to enjoy themselves with whatever they had planned next.

After taking a refreshing shower and with her hair almost completely dry, Risa lay lazily on her bed. Stroking the Polaroid photo with her forefinger lovingly, she couldn’t help but grin upon seeing the faces of her friends in the picture.

The gokkies were standing at the back with Makoto and Asami in the center. Ai was beside Asami while Risa was beside Makoto. Of course they all had their arms around each other’s shoulders.

The three younger girls were squatted in front of the group and Sayumi had her arms tightly wrapped around Eri’s waist while Reina was trying her hardest to squeeze in between them.

However the most important point of the photo was the bright beaming smile each girl wore on her face.

Picking up a yellow glitter pen sticking in the pen holder of her desk, Risa scribbled across the photo in her nicest handwriting what they had yelled out earlier.

“The lines are blurred!” For this was two generations that really didn’t feel awkward together despite the difference in ages and seniority.



Pulling open the drawer of her bedside table, Risa took out the leather bound book she kept inside. Turning to the page after her last entry, she started to write her newest entry.

Date: July 14th 2006      
Weather: Cool and cloudy
Feelings: Happy yet sad
