'Hangover' sequel for 2011
When The Hangover crossed over into mainstream pop culture, three significant things happened.

Number one, a sequel was guaranteed. Director Todd Phillips is preparing it for a 2010 summer shoot and a May 26, 2011 release through Warner Bros. But the storyline and even the city of debauchery is secret, Phillips says. “I’ve been instructed by Warners not to (tell),” he admits.

Bond 23 is On Hold Until MGM Figures Out Money Problems

As a lifelong die-hard James Bond fan, I always hate reporting this kind of news, especially when this latest Daniel Craig version of Bond has been so successful. But alas I'm only the messenger and there's nothing I can really do. When we first reported that MGM was having financial issues last September, James Bond was highlighted as one of their key franchises - "the studio doesn't think it can stay alive without 007." Then we heard in December from screenwriter Peter Morgan that the sequel was on hold. MI6 confirmed with producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli that Bond 23 is indeed on hold for the time being.

"Well, our timeline's a little up in the air what with the situation at MGM, so we have to be flexible. We just don't know enough about the situation to comment, but we know it's uncertain."

So Bond 23 is "uncertain"? That's not good at all! MGM is supposed to have an update in the next few weeks, whether it be more financing or a takeover or a sale, so we should know more soon. And I'm sure as soon as they figure out what's going on (or sell to new owners), they'll put Bond 23 back in action. Morgan said that he's finished with the script and everything seems to be ready to go, it's just a matter of getting greenlit early enough to make a late 2011 release. Speaking of the story, Wilson says it's not as far along as we may think.

"Well… we've hired the writers and we've been working with them but it's just too early to say anything," he said. "You know, often at this stage, I find myself saying, 'Oh, we're gonna do this and that', then six months from now you'll say, 'That isn't in the film at all - you told me it was…' I think we're at the stage where a lot of ideas are floating around that sound very good, but whether they make the final cut, who knows?"

Very interesting statements. Let's hope the "shocking story" that Peter Morgan talked about last year is still intact, because I think that kind of story could really re-energize the Bond franchise once again (coming off of Quantum of Solace). Not that it needs anything like that, it just needs money and a greenlight as well as a good director and I'm sure it'll be as big of a success as its always been previously. As I said at the beginning, as a die-hard Bond fan, I'm just anxious to see the next one as soon as possible. As long as it starts shooting by early 2011 (which is still reportedly the case), they'll get the next one out on time.

Sam Mendes is Directing James Bond 23, On Track for 2011!

MGM has announced (via Heat Vision) that Oscar winning British filmmaker Sam Mendes, of American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road, and Away We Go, has been hired to direct the upcoming 23rd James Bond movie. Despite recent concerns that the production was temporarily on hold, MGM is on track to release Bond 23 in late 2011. Bond regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are writing the script along with Frost/Nixon writer Peter Morgan. Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli will produce. Daniel Craig will, of course, reprise his role as 007. Looks like they put together one hell of a great team!

Bond 23 will be Mendes' first "action-heavy project," especially since Jarhead didn't really have any action. I just hope he doesn't pull another Jarhead and turn James Bond into an intelligent, slow-moving drama without any killing or chasing or spying, because that would really upset me. This also probably means we'll see Mendes' wife Kate Winslet in the movie, considering he usually casts her most of his movies. Mendes is certainly a great filmmaker, I just don't feel like he's the right guy to tackle the next Bond. Something just feels odd about this and I'm honestly concerned. We'll see who else he casts in this. What do you think?

Update: If you didn't already figure this out, this announcement today was MGM's sly way of "covering up" the story about Bond 23 being put on hold. Since no one would believe them that it wasn't on hold, they just decided to make this announcement to prove that it was still moving forward as planned. Nikki Finke has another update saying that Mendes is only being brought on as a "consultant" for the time being because once he's signed on as director, MGM has to spend money (and they don't have any). "The producers are working on a deal to bring Sam on as consultant with an eye to direct." But he's not officially signed on yet.

Darren Aronofsky's Robocop is Under 'Arrested Development'

Pun intended! Last July we reported things were a bit shaky regarding Darren Aronofsky's forthcoming remake of RoboCop. The folks over at RoboCop Archive (via Moviehole) have now confirmed the worst (or maybe the best depending on how badly you want a RoboCop remake) as Phoenix Pictures says that it's on hold and "the problem is that Mary Parent, Chairperson of MGM, wants a 3D movie for the new RoboCop. But, as you know, Darren Aronofsky is a real artist and he's not interested in gimmicks like, 3D, CGI, filming digital, he wants to do everything as real [or organic] as possible just like The Fountain." Damn straight!

While it sounds a bit condescending to say that anyone who uses 3D, CGI, or digital filmmaking isn't a "real artist," I'm 100% behind Aronofsky's desire to make RoboCop as genuine and organic as possible. Sure 3D and CGI have brought a plethora of new ways for filmmakers to craft worlds, characters and the like, but a RoboCop special effects bonanza in 3D would just be white noise whereas a RoboCop film shot under the unique filmmaking eye of Aronofsky in an unconventional, grounded manner will be a nice change of pace. Aronofsky isn't the guy you get to direct a film like this if all you're going to do is try to control his creativity. If you're looking for that filmmaker, his name is Joe Johnston, and he's busy sorting out his last disaster.

Will Arnett Says 'Arrested Development' Will Shoot This Year

Good news for those of you who are fans of "Arrested Development." After years of hearing rumors and rumblings of a movie being in the works, it looks like they're finally going to shoot one this year. Well, it's still a little early to say it'll happen 100%, but with Michael Cera saying it'd shoot this year as well, I think they're really trying to make it happen. ComingSoon talked with Will Arnett recently who confirmed that they're definitely going to shoot it this year. "That's the plan," Arnett told them, before joking that, "We're hoping [to shoot it] once Jason Bateman gets out of rehab. I think that's when we're going to start shooting."

Arnett otherwise gave a fairly straight answer: "It's very refreshing. We are working on the movie right now, yeah… We don't have a completed script yet, but it's forthcoming and we're going to make the movie this year." As far as I know, that means they got everyone to agree to return, including Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Alia Shawkat, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor, etc, but who knows if they've got other new plans? We also want to know if Ron Howard will direct, but it doesn't seem likely considering he's shooting that Vince Vaughn comedy next. We'll keep you updated! Who's excited to finally see an Arrested Development movie?

Taylor Lautner cast in Stretch Armstrong movie
A live-action feature film based on the popular Hasbro action figure Stretch Armstrong is in the works at Universal with Steve Oedekerk scripting and XMA-trained NEW MOON star Taylor Lautner cast in the lead.

Some may recall that Oedekerk, who produced Nickelodeon’s “The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron,” also wrote and directed the kung fu movie spoof KUNG POW: ENTER THE FIST (2002).

Lautner is currently riding high as one of the stars of hit teen sci-fi film series TWILIGHT. In addition to his upcoming role in the third film, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE, Lautner has been cast in two action films. He will star in MAX STEEL, which is based on another toy and CANCUN, a film that is expected to allow him to show off his extreme martial arts skills in an island adventure.

Stretch Armstrong was introduced to the market in 1976, originally by Kenner. Unlike other action figures, Stretch was filled with gel that allowed his elastic arms and legs to be stretched out.

There isn’t much of story to go with the toy but other related action figures have been sold over the years including Evil X-Ray Wretch Armstrong, Stretch Monster and Fetch Armstrong, a stretchable dog.

Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams return to action for 'Mission: Impossible IV'

09/02/2010 7:36:00 PM
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOS ANGELES - Tom Cruise is starring in another impossible mission.

Paramount Pictures announced Tuesday that Cruise will be back in front of the camera for "Mission: Impossible IV," due in theatres over Memorial Day weekend in 2011.

Cruise and "Mission: Impossible III" director J.J. Abrams previously agreed to produce a fourth movie in the action franchise. But it had not been known if Cruise would star again.

Abrams will stick to producing this time, with the search on for a director to shoot the new instalment. Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are writing the script, based on a story idea from Cruise and Abrams.

The movie reunites Cruise and Paramount, which cut the actor loose from a long-term development deal in 2006.

Bruce Willis Says We Might See Die Hard 5 Sometime Soon?

Oh no, not another one. Bruce Willis is out talking to press this week for Kevin Smith's Cop Out, which hits theaters on Friday, and of course he was asked about the Die Hard franchise, since that's one franchise people still seem to love (even though the last one sucked). MTV  asked him if there's a chance we'll see a Die Hard 5 and Willis says it might happen, but there aren't many details to give right now. But he does have some ideas. "I would hire Len Wiseman right now," he says, referring to the Live Free or Die Hard director. Personally, I would rather he not be hired because I believe he screwed up the last one, but that's just me.

So where could they go in this sequel if they've already explored most of the US (by way of the "internet") in Die Hard, Die Harder, Die Hard: With a Vengeance, and Live Free or Die Hard? What about not in the US! "Well, it's got to go worldwide," Willis said. "That would be my contribution to [the next movie]." Okay, I'm down for that, but we need a story first, and it sounds like Fox hasn't even thought about hiring a writer yet. "I take a certain amount of pride in being part of that [mythology], and the fact that I still get to do it," he says. "[But] making people laugh is the real deal." Just don't let Die Hard 5 become an action comedy.

I think Drew McWeeny of HitFix said it best: "Maybe I misread the general reaction to the last film in the Die Hard series. Maybe there are people out there saying to themselves right now, 'I wonder what happened to John McClane after he fought that jet airplane bare-handed and saved the universe from the Internet,' but if so, I've never met one of them." This franchise started it out with one of the best action movies ever (Die Hard) and ended up with one of the worst action movies ever (Live Free or Die Hard), so I don't have any desire to see another sequel, even though I'm sure Fox is probably trying to make it happen anyway.

You can read more of (and watch) the interview with Willis over on MTV if you're interested. I hope this doesn't happen, but Willis seems like he wants it to happen, and if that's the case, then I'm sure he's on the phone with Fox right now. But maybe people want to see this butchered franchise continue on?
