Wait - There IS Another New Rambo Movie Coming in 2011?

Wait, wait, wait… what the heck is going on here? If you remember, a few weeks ago we reported a big story about Sylvester Stallone himself saying, to Empire magazine, that: "I think Rambo's pretty well done. I don't think there'll be any more. I'm about 99% sure." Well, maybe that 1% slipped through, as I ventured through the Cannes Marketplace showfloor earlier today with Peter from SlashFilm  and we picked up a new promotional flyer (and saw a poster on their wall) at the Nu Image / Millennium Films booth for Rambo V  (see above). It doesn't say anything except "Coming 2011" on the back. So is it actually happening anyway?

We don't really know what is going on, and nobody else seems to know either, but we'll of course keep you updated. There's a possibility that Millennium had some contract with Stallone and is forcing him to return to make another, despite his desire to leave and work on other franchises like The Expendables (hence his statements). Or, although this is much more unlikely, there's a possibility that Nu Image hasn't been told by Stallone yet that he's not going to make Rambo V, and they're selling a (dead) film that will never actually get made. Who really knows if we'll see Rambo V or not, but we hope to get to the bottom of all this soon!

Update: After this news first broke, Ain't It Cool News got in touch with Stallone and asked him what's up with all of this. His answer was a plain and simple: "NO FUCKING WAY." As I predicted above, Stallone says he has "no clue" what's up with this poster and thinks that "it could be the rights holders trying to raise ludicrous funds to get Sly back in front of the camera. Sly said, 'Maybe, but it ain't happening.' He then told me that the folks behind those posters essentially said that if Sly didn't do it - someone else would. And Sly seems fine with that." Rambo without Stallone? Will that even work? I doubt it, but we'll find out soon.

What do y'all think of the Karate Kid remake?  He learns kung fu from Jackie Chan and kicks a bunch of Chinese kids' asses.  Hollywood needs to get original.

The Rock - 7/10

a.k.a. Modern Warfare 2 : The Film. A betraying General, throwing knives and a gunfight in a shower room. It's a Michael Bay movie so expect car chases, stereotypes and shit blowing up. A lot.

Coraline - 9/10

Reminds me of Spirited Away. It's well animated (closest comparison I can make is Nightmare Before Christmas) and coming from one of my favourite authors (Neil Gaiman), you can expect it to be a wonderfully creepy modern fairy tale. In fact, it's quite dark. Darker than what you expect from Western animated movies. Some of the imagery is quite chilling. An all sugary-experience, something that most animated movies aim for, can sometimes be boring. We need a few Coralines from time to time.

I just watched The Road. Oh my god @_@ It's the saddest thing I've seen in quite a while. So emotionally loaded! Extremely well made, though and the acting is superb. Warmly recommend it, but uhm.. I wouldn't watch it alone, and you need chocolate as a pick me up! Such depressing stuff ._.;

Watched Rob Roy last night. ... I couldn't actually follow the plot, because Tim Roth's performance was way too distracting xD In a good way! Ahahaha. Oh my god. He so should have won the Oscar he got nominated for for that part.

Hot Tub Time Machine.
When they throw shit in the start of the movie to make it funny, you know it's a rubbish film.

Seriously. Just watch Bill and Ted again for some real laughs.

Just watched City Island. Incredibly sweet and funny film about a kind of wacky family~ Ezra Miller's character kept cracking me up, oh my god. XD Absolutely worth a watch, but I recommend not reading up about the film beforehand. Let things come as a surprise ;D

Just saw the new Karate Kid movie - quite good IMHO - liked the fact that I could watch it and enjoy it without comparing it to the original too much.

Timothy Olyphant set to Escape From New York?
Quote
Timothy Olyphant could be taking on the lead role of Snake Plissken in Breck Eisner’s remake of Escape From New York.

The part was originally played by Kurt Russell in John Carpenter’s 1981 film, which had the one-eyed soldier attempting to escape a futuristic prison based in an abandoned New York City.

With Eisner and Olyphant having worked together on this year’s surprisingly decent The Crazies, it seems both are keen to re-pair for future projects.

And Escape could be just that project. Eisner spoke to Movieweb recently, stating:

“I love working with Timothy Olyphant, and I will be working with him again. He is an amazing actor. A talented guy. And he’s incredibly funny. He needs to do a great comedy, because he is a funny guy. But I will work with him again. I can promise you that.”

This re-do will shake up the original’s concept, with the remake cannibalising a Snake Plissken origins story with bits of the 1981’s original plot. (Vulture, who saw the script, said it “nailed the humour in Plissken without slipping into camp”.)

Speaking recently to ComingSoon, Eisner explained other changes, which include setting the movie in a penal colony rather than a post-apocalyptic New York.

“Conceptually, it’s an idea that’s not true today because of the world we live in. So, how the prison is created is going to be different than in Carpenter’s version. The anxiety of the world and anxiety of our existence post-9/11 is there, especially the anxiety in Manhattan post-9/11.

“Plot-wise, they’re different, emotionally they’re very similar. That’s why it’ll be interesting to tackle this movie, to have a slightly different take but with the same results which is Manhattan is turned into a walled prison.”

With these two on board, could this be a rare good remake? We’re ever hopeful…

Think Olyphant would make for a great Snake?

I think Olyphant is as intimidating as a morning TV presenter, this is what strikes me as odd:

So you're in a movie called Escape from New York, where you don't escape from New York?

^ If the sound of the remake for EFNY is anything to go by, they'll give it the same name of Big Trouble in Little China but it's about a man having to keep a pet bull inside his china store while the bull's owner is away on holiday. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Jackie Chan.

Spirit of the times. I'm still glad The Road turned out not to be a remake of La strada.

Good times for movies for me to watch this weekend. For the first time I'll be watching Star Trek, Moon, Blood : The Last Vampire and Predator. For once I'll get to see "GET TO DA CHOPPA!!" in context
