Ricky Ray will remain with the Edmonton Eskimos through the 2013 season, the team announced Monday. Eskimo general manager Eric Tillman said the quarterback is “a championship calibre player and person” in a news release announcing the contract extension.

Tragic, shocking news from Bomberland, as yesterday afternoon, a sudden heart attack claimed the life of our defensive line coach, Mr. Richard Harris.

Blue Bombers defensive line coach Richard Harris dies after collapsing

WINNIPEG - Richard Harris, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers assistant head coach and defensive line coach, died Tuesday afternoon after collapsing at Canad Inns Stadium. He was 63.

A league source requesting anonymity said Harris collapsed in his office and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Harris was in his sixth season with the CFL club.

Bombers president Jim Bell confirmed Harris's death.

“This has struck our entire organization from the top down,” he said in a statement. “We are all in a state of shock and first and foremost would like to express our deepest sympathies to his family.

"The Winnipeg Football Club has lost not only a great coach, but an even better man.”

Blue Bomber players immediately took to social networking site Twitter to express their sorrow and disbelief.

"Coach Harris was one of the best people I have ever met," tweeted long-snapper Chris Cvetkovic. "Every man should strive to be the type of man that coach Harris was."

"Hurtin so much right now ... lost a gr8 man, father figure to me ... man things will never be the same in WPG," wrote defensive back Alex Suber.

Harris joined the Bombers in 2006 as their defensive line coach and was appointed assistant head coach prior to the start of this season.

Winnipeg's defence has played a major role in the club's resurgence this year. The Bombers (3-1) are tied with Montreal atop the East Division standings after posting a league-worst 4-14 record in 2010.

The club's defence is allowing a league-low 293 yards per game and is ranked second in fewest points allowed (19.2 per game). And the defensive line has terrorized rival quarterbacks, posting a league-high 15 sacks.

"I had the good fortune to chat with him on the sideline in Winnipeg only recently, and that experience confirmed for me what I had always heard about Coach Harris — that this was a man of tremendous warmth and knowledge, a true gentleman and a credit to our game,'' CFL commissioner Mark Cohon said in a statement.

Harris arrived in Winnipeg after one season with the Ottawa Renegades as their defensive line coach. He had the same role for four years before that with the B.C. Lions.

Wally Buono, the Lions coach and general manager, appeared shaken by the news. Harris served as B.C.'s defensive line coach for Buono's first two years in Vancouver.

"When somebody passes away it's always shocking,'' said Buono, who underwent heart bypass surgery in 2004. "Richard was a good man. Just the fact he's gone is almost discouraging.''

Buono also believes Harris might've actually saved his life during their time together with the Lions.

After B.C. beat Saskatchewan in the 2004 West Division final to advance to the Grey Cup, it was Harris who stopped jubilant Lions players from pouring cold water on their head coach. Buono knew at the time of his heart condition but had not told any of the coaches.

"I believe he did,'' Buono said. "I felt something was going on.

"Richard being as sensitive as he is, he sensed something.''

Saskatchewan Roughriders linebacker Barrin Simpson, who played in Winnipeg for three seasons and was a CFL all-star under Harris, also took to Twitter to express his shock.

"No way, it can't be! To lose a great friend and close friend and a father like figure. I'm deeply sadden by this news," said Simpson.

In 2000, Harris was head coach of the Portland Prowlers of the Indoor Professional Football League. And he won three semi-pro championships as head coach in the Northwest Football League, with the Eastside Express in 1989 and the Pudget Sound Jets in 1994 and 1995.

Harris, a defensive lineman, spent eight seasons in the NFL after being picked fifth overall in the 1971 draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was all-rookie that year.

He played three seasons with the Eagles before joining the Chicago Bears for two years. Harris finished his career by playing three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

Harris played at Grambling State University under legendary head coach Eddie Robinson.

He is survived by wife Tami and children Kimberly, Chianti, Jennifer and Michael.

Heart attack claims life of Bombers asst. head coach

Richard Harris, the longtime defensive line coach with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, has died. He was 63.

Harris is survived by his wife Tami; their four children, Kimberly, Chianti, Jennifer, Michael; and three grandchildren, Chandler, Keegan-Michael, and Aurora.

Harris suffered a heart attack inside the team complex at Polo Park after the club moved indoors from practice. An ambulance arrived at Canad Inns Stadium shortly after he collapsed, and he was taken to hospital.

Players and office staff peered outside the office doors with concerned faces, some breaking down as the emergency medical staff treated their beloved coach in the ambulance.

"This has struck our entire organization from the top down," Bomber president Jim Bell said in a release. "We are all in a state of shock and first and foremost would like to express our deepest sympathies to his family. The Winnipeg Football Club has lost not only a great coach, but an even better man."

This season marked his sixth season with the Bombers and prior to this year, he was named assistant head coach to Winnipeg head coach Paul LaPolice.

Harris was a popular figure around the organization and in the city. A large man with a famous deep and booming voice, the always friendly Harris would often engage fans at practice, inquiring about their well being and taking the time to listen to the response.

Last season, Harris’ line was one of the best defensive fronts in the CFL. Defensive end Phillip Hunt led the league with 16 sacks, while Odell Willis finished with 11 sacks. Hunt and veteran tackle Doug Brown were named to the CFL all-star team under his watch.

Harris has been a defensive coach in the CFL since 2001, when he joined the B.C. Lions. Harris also coached in Ottawa (2005), spending one season with the Renegades before joining Doug Berry's coaching staff in Winnipeg for the 2006 season.

The Shreveport, Louisiana-native played seven years in the NFL as a defensive end. Drafted by Philadelphia in the first round of the 1971 NFL draft fifth overall, Harris played three seasons with the Eagles and was named to the all-rookie team in his first season (1971).

Harris also saw time on the field with the Chicago Bears (1974-75) and the Seattle Seahawks (1976-77).

Prior to his pro career, Harris was a standout pass rusher at Grambling State University, earning All-American honours in 1970.

Sure the Blue and Gold got off to a bit of a slow start, but once our boy Pierce ran for that TD in the 2nd quarter, we started turning things around. Not sure if I've mentioned this before, but along with being, as he once put it, "the village elder" of Swaggerville, every Tuesday Blue Bomber's DT Doug Brown also writes a weekly CFL/football-themed column for the local newspaper. I particularly liked what he wrote for this week's column.

Why some people hate 'Swaggerville'

We are eight games into the 2011 Winnipeg Blue Bomber football season and I've come to notice that not everyone finds the spinoff of "Swaggerville" as amusing and entertaining as I do.

In fact, after studying the population of dissent and disapproval that is out there, I have been able to come up with five plausible reasons why some are turned off by this national phenomenon. If you are not an advocate of "Swaggerville," or just put off by it, it is most likely because of one of these five reasons.

The first is the easiest and most obvious these days. You hate it because you didn't come up with it. Like it or not, Swaggerville has become an independent, marketable entity. It has received unbelievable amounts of national television, print, radio, and Internet exposure, though it has no marketing budget. Its founding members are doing paid appearances on its behalf and people are lining up for their autographs.

"Swaggerville" is selling out of T-shirts, and is being piggy backed by other companies with "Swagger" type products -- like all of the hair product merchandise that was sent to our locker-room last week. It has a Facebook fan page with thousands of members, a rap song has been recorded about it, and it is such a catch phrase on the football team, it even has its own stylistic language rights. My regular abdominal and pushup routine during practice has now been re-named "seven minute swagger abs," and the 300-yard shuttles we often do are obviously now "swagger-shuttles." It is no secret that people are often resentful and or jealous of other people's successes, and "Swaggerville" is a marketing phenom that is no different.

The second reason some people don't like this contagious beacon that began in the defensive secondary some time ago is that it is taking attention away from them. People take offence to "Swaggerville" because it's not about them, they aren't a part of it, and it is receiving huge amounts of press and airtime. One thing that has become very apparent of late is that when players around the CFL were asked their opinions of "Swaggerville," they either hated it and took offence to it, or they had no problem with it.

The more self indulgent types probably took offence to it because it takes away from the attention they are receiving, while many of the others interviewed by TSN, thought of it as amusing and an interesting rallying point for an upstart team.

If you get off a plane in Winnipeg as a visiting team and immediately don sunglasses to mock what some have referred to as a "cartoon" stunt, this is attention seeking behavior that has obviously been generated to fill a void. If we went to Hamilton and pulled out work belts and clipped some hammers to it in reference to "Hammerville," it would be pretty evident that we were feeling left out and in need of more media attention.

Thirdly, I assume some people have an aversion to "Swaggerville" because they don't fully understand how it is being utilized or conceptualized. After all, if you base the idea strictly on its definition, swagger can be interpreted as, "conducting oneself in an arrogant or pompous manner." Or, "to walk with an air of overbearing self-confidence."

While professional football is a game that should be played with a certain degree of swagger, "Swaggerville's" mandate, as defined by founder Jovon Johnson, is more of a buzzword for the defence and a description of the confidence and self belief its members play with. If you haven't been paying attention, the players that ran with this catchphrase do their talking with their actions on the field and usually not in the press and papers before the games.

A fourth aversion to the "swag," is that many people think it is premature to not only name yourself with more than half a season to go, but to give a name to any group or unit that has not been baptized in championship glory. While for the most part I agree with this standpoint, if you look back to the origins of the phrasing, the players did not anoint themselves with this name. From my recollections, it was a coach on this football team a few years back that implored the players to play with a "swagger" on the field, to believe in themselves and perform with the upmost confidence. They just ran with it and the rest is history.

Lastly, if this still does not adequately explain why you are not a fan of the concept or at least find it fun and entertaining, it may be because you are a traditionalist and we don't play in "Swaggerville," we play in Winnipeg and we are the Blue Bombers -- a very storied CFL franchise with 10 league championships, and not a bunch of guys with "swag."

No one on this team would argue with that premise and the swagger is not something designed to take away from the proud legacy of the football club, it is just an enthusiastic spinoff with positive community ramifications and a comical outlet to many others.
