Let The Right One in - John Ajvide Lindqvist

I've been curious about this when I first heard the raving reviews for the film adaptation. I got the book for Christmas, so the movie will have to wait until I finish this. It's about a 12 yr old outsider called Oskar who's continually bullied at school and living on a rather dreary housing estate, delving into escapist fantasies where he sees himself torturing and getting revenge on his bullies. Then one day he meets a girl living in the same housing estate who he's fascinated with until he learns her secret. She's a vampire, forever a child and has to live off fresh blood gathered for her by a resident of the same housing estate. A great read at only 60 pages in, and it's already uncomprimising talking about lucid activities in pretty stark detail.

A Random History Of Football - Colin Murray
Colin Murray's one of my favourite radio DJ's and in this book, he went and researched, well, random stories about football. Some funny, some tragic, but mostly it's a very humourous read with bizarre and unbelieveable facts. For example, in South Africa, after a manager rushed onto the pitch to question a referee's decision, the ref pulled out a 9mm and shot the manager at point blank range in the chest, killing him instantly :o

Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand
The ubiquitous Objectivism reading material. To be honest I already 'finished' the book, but not without skipping a 70 page speech in the middle, which really is the bulk of the whole thing. The end was pretty disappointing, and pretty much pointed to the fact that the whole book was written just so Ayn Rand could fuck with all her readers and let them read that speech. The story itself is quite nice, if a bit inane.

Finished reading Let The Right One in. Fantastic book, what's amazing is just how dreary everyone's life is, but with Eli, by all accounts the monster of the movie, her life is easily the most, well, pathetic. Yet despite this, Eli is absolutely terrifying when hunger strikes. It has some of the most downright bloody descriptions of violence you'll ever read. And at it's heart is this heart-breaking love story which underpins just how far you're willing to accept someone, flaws and all, once you've fallen in love. In short, it's everything Twilight isn't i.e. it's good and these vampires definately do not sparkle. I love this book, can't wait to see the film now.

Now reading The Strain by Chuck Hogan, but the original idea was created by Guillermo Del Toro. This is yet another vampire novel except this time, the vampire is much more visceral and animalistic in nature. More Nosferatu than Dracula, and they certainly won't seduce you with smouldering brown eyes. It's a race against the clock to find a vampire who's turning other people into ones, and stopping him before he gets the chance to spread any more. Set in New York, it combines old-age mythology with modern day science and is also pretty good so far.

I'm currently reading the newest released chapter of Kanojo wa Kanno Shousetsuka, a seinenish manga by Goto Akira. It's a story about a young and fresh editor who has been appointed to work with a very popular erotica writer who just happens to be quite the beauty. While fairly fanservice heavy, it does not fail in having a good story and nice characters.

Utopia by Sir Thomas More. Meh, it was ok, not the best. But I do respect the thought he put into it.

The Strain was pretty good. It reads very much like it could be translated easily across to a movie.

Speaking of books-to-movies, I'm now reading Shutter Island.
