Miami coach Pat Riley has apparently seen enough. The Houston Rockets have already convinced him, not even two weeks into the season.

"You just think about the three teams here," Riley said this week of the vaunted Texas Triangle. "It could be the three best teams in the league."

It doesn't seem to matter that the Rockets, at this early stage of the Rick Adelman era, frequently need offensive direction barked out from the bench, whereas Chris Webber and Mike Bibby and Vlade Divac could run Sacramento's read-and-react attack out of the high post without a word spoken.

It doesn't seem to matter that referees -- at least according to Adelman -- allow more physicality at the elbow now than they do down low, which Adelman believes is a change since the Kings' heyday that complicates Houston's transition to this new system.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Vince Carter of the New Jersey Nets will be sidelined indefinitely with a sprained right ankle.

An MRI on Monday revealed Carter sustained a Grade 1 sprain on Saturday night against the Boston Celtics, Nets president Rod Thorn said Monday. There is no timetable for Carter's return.

The Nets play the New Orleans Hornets on Monday night.

The eight-time All-Star was hurt in the third quarter of a 112-101 loss to Boston. He landed on the foot of Celtics forward Paul Pierce after a dunk.

Carter averaged 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists through the first six games. He signed a four-year contract valued at about $65 million in the offseason.

The NBA needs to stop trying to do what feels good and should focus instead on what makes sense. If franchises are going to start playing musical chairs, the logical move would be to let the vagabond New Orleans Hornets go to Oklahoma City instead of uprooting the Seattle SuperSonics from the only place they've ever called home.

Everyone feels sorry for New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. No one wants to look like the bad guy, to be seen walking over a fallen man instead of helping him up. So we're supposed to think that keeping a dozen pro basketball players around will lead the way to recovery and that if they left it would be the final cruel blow to a battered city.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Minutes after watching the Miami Heat miss shot after shot in another uninspiring performance that ended in a 91-76 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats, coach Pat Riley was asked what he could do to generate some offense.

"Me? Play. I guarantee you I should suit up. I'd play better than some of them right now," Riley said Tuesday night. "I guarantee it. I swear to God. With an old hip and 62 years old and I can't see, I'll play better than some of my guys tonight. Come on, they were pretty bad."

Right now, the Lakers are like a couple with a newborn baby, grateful for a few moments of peace and quiet, wary that the slightest noise could set off another round of crying and screaming.

The Lakers' 3-2 start, public declarations from Chicago and Dallas that they weren't Kobe Bryant-shopping (at least for now), and Bryant's realization and acceptance that his trade wishes won't be fulfilled easily have created this blissful nap time. That could change this week with a challenging schedule that includes back-to-back games in San Antonio and Dallas, followed by a home game against Detroit. It will be an early referendum on how the Lakers match up with the contending class.

How is it possible that one of the loudest mouths to ever step onto an NBA court could walk away in silence?

Maybe it's because, for all of the talking Gary Payton did in his career, he never was talked about as much as a man who ranks 21st all time in points, sixth in assists, third in steals and eighth in games played should have been. Although he hasn't quite sailed off into the sunset yet, he's at the dock with the ropes untied, easing into retirement and sounding unlikely to change his mind.

"It's kind of definite," Payton said of his plan to retire.

Shaquille O'Neal didn't have a problem with teammate Dwyane Wade calling him out in the media earlier this week. In fact, he welcomed it.

O'Neal and the Miami Heat are still struggling at 1-8 after their loss to the Boston Celtics on Friday night. But Shaq was fine with Wade saying he needed to motivate himself to turn things around -- for his team and himself.

Shaq just needs a fire up his ass!!! HE CAN DO IT!!

Good to see the Lakers spread the ball around, Odom stepping it up against the Pisstons.

Kobe had a weak game last nite. I betcha he gonna DEMOLISH the Bulls tonite. He's gonna retire in the purple and gold.

Funniest moment of the week was Philip's brokeback comment about San Antonio's penetration defense. Exactly, Bruce Bowen plays like he wants to hump your leg night in, night out. He plays defense like Prince and the Blouses.

^ yeah, Dwight Howard's a frickin beast. you see those shoulders on him.... and he's only 22

-Durant's gonna be a superstar no doubt. i guess Seattle was lucky they got the #2 pick... too bad for Portland. also remember when they were laughing at Durant when he couldn't bench press 1rep of 185lbs at the NBA combine... I guess bench presses don't make you a better basketball player

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Lakers center Kwame Brown was helped off the court Sunday night after injuring his left leg in the first quarter of a 106-78 win over the Chicago Bulls.

Lakers spokesman John Black said Brown sustained moderate sprains of his left ankle and knee when Bulls center Ben Wallace fell into him under the Los Angeles basket with 8:18 left in the opening period.

Black said X-rays were negative, adding the Lakers would probably have a better idea Monday about the severity of the injuries.

Kobe Bryant charged into Wallace while driving toward the basket and passing underneath to Brown, who went down in a heap clutching his left leg after the contact, which came as he was going up for a shot.

Brown was averaging 4.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in his first six games.

Meanwhile, Luol Deng, the Bulls' second-leading scorer, sat out because of lower back pain.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- Stephon Marbury was set to rejoin the New York Knicks' starting lineup Tuesday night, a week after he responded to a demotion by leaving the team for one game.

Marbury said he was told by coach Isiah Thomas at the beginning of the morning shootaround that he would start against the Golden State Warriors. Marbury was a reserve for three games, and the Knicks lost all of them to extend their losing streak to six.

"I'm excited about playing always, and to be able to come back home and start and get back into the flow of things is always a good thing," Marbury said.

Orlando, FL – The Orlando Magic have acquired forward Brian Cook and guard Maurice Evans from the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for forward Trevor Ariza, General Manager Otis Smith announced today. In addition, the Magic have waived forward Bo Outlaw.

NEW YORK -- We'd go ahead and call it the Mother of All Knicks Debacles, except for one thing.

Nearly a decade of bearing personal witness to the downfall of the New York Knickerbockers has taught us to never label anything "the worst it has ever or could ever be," because recent history has shown us time after head-shaking time that things actually will get worse at Madison Square Garden, that this week's or this month's or this season's new low will not remain a new low for long.

Still, it really was a new low at MSG Tuesday night as the fans chanted "Fire Isiah" more than a half-dozen times during a lifeless 26-point loss to the Golden State Warriors that extended New York's losing streak to seven games.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Gilbert Arenas had surgery Wednesday to repai or torn meniscus and says he'll be out for three months, according to report on the Washington Post's Web site.

Arenas originally hurt his knee last April. He hurt it again last Friday at Minnesota. He underwent an MRI in Washington on Wednesday, which found the tear.

"It's a downer because I really thought I was getting back," Arenas said. "It's a big setback but I guess I'll start all over again."

The Post said Arenas won't be able to handle any basketball-related activity for at least three weeks and could be cleared to practice in three months.

"Everything just started hurting after the game," Arenas said. "The pain came out of nowhere."

So … what's up with Kevin Durant?

The Sonics rookie made a splash in Atlanta last week when his game-winning 3-point shot knocked off the Hawks in double overtime. It was an incredible shot, as you probably saw -- he leaned away to his left to get away from the length of Al Horford while calmly drilling a 25-footer at the buzzer.

The hope was that he could build on that and deliver better results overall. Unfortunately, he's gone in the opposite direction.
