Ilgauskas destined for return to Cavs?

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers are applying full-court pressure to Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

Several of the center's former Cleveland teammates visited him in New York on Tuesday, hoping to persuade him to re-sign with the Cavs and help them make a run at an NBA title. Ilgauskas, who has a place in SoHo, was traded last month to Washington in the deal for forward Antawn Jamison.

The Cavs play at New Jersey on Wednesday, and they reached out to the big man affectionately known as "Z."

"They told him they want him to come back," agent Herb Rudoy said. "[Cavaliers general manager] Danny Ferry flew in the other day and met with him, too."

Ilgauskas recently bought out his contract with the Wizards, freeing him to re-sign with any team after 30 days.

The Cavs need him.

With Shaquille O'Neal out for the remainder of the regular season following thumb surgery, Cleveland's frontline is woefully undersized. On Monday, coach Mike Brown started 6-foot-9 forward J.J. Hickson at center. Hickson scored 17 points with nine rebounds and two blocks in a rout of the Knicks, but he's just a temporary fix.

Ilgauskas has drawn interest from several other teams, including the Atlanta Hawks. Rudoy said Ilgauskas is weighing his options and that the 34-year-old has mixed feelings.

"He's got a big emotional investment in Cleveland, in the city and the team," Rudoy said. "On the other hand, he was not happy to be used as a pawn in the trade."

Rudoy expects Ilgauskas to make a decision by this weekend. Ilgauskas can announce where he'll play at anytime but cannot sign a contract until March 22.

"He'll tell me when he's ready to tell me," Rudoy said. "I'm waiting to hear from him."

Cleveland's all-time leader in rebounds and games played, Ilgauskas is one of the Cavs' most popular players. But this has been a strange season for the 7-foot-3 veteran, whose career was nearly ended prematurely because of serious foot injuries that cost him two full seasons.

Ilgauskas first lost his starting job to O'Neal, an understandable move by the Cavs who felt they needed more interior size to dethrone Orlando in the Eastern Conference. But on Nov. 28, the night Ilgauskas was set to break Cleveland's record for games played, he was inexplicably benched by Brown.

The sensitive Ilgauskas was miffed by the slight and expressed his disappointment days later following a Cavs' home win, choking back tears as he spoke.

"I'm going to be a bigger man and walk away from this," he said at the time. "I know when I go to bed at night my conscience is clear. I love this team. I love my teammates. They are like a family to me. I'm going to come every day to work and try my hardest. Hopefully we can win a championship for this city because they deserve it.

"It has not been an easy ordeal."

And then came the trade, which although it had been rumored for weeks, caught Ilgauskas off guard.

Ilgauskas has hinted about this being his last season and he would like nothing more than to end it by winning a championship for the only team he has ever known. He never suited up for the Wizards.

Rudoy said he has received hundreds of e-mails, letters and phone calls from Cleveland fans who want Ilgauskas to return.

"They've really reached out to him," he said. "He loves the fans of Cleveland and I know how much the Cavaliers mean to him. But again, he was not happy to be a pawn. It was really disappointing."

Will Yao's baby be American?

Associated Press

BEIJING -- Chinese basketball fans want to know -- will Yao Ming's baby be an American?

The Houston Rockets center, who is sidelined this season with a broken left foot, recently returned to the United States with wife Ye Li. That prompted speculation among his followers that the baby girl due this summer could be born in America.

Yao's personal life is closely followed by his many fans at home, from his 2007 Shanghai wedding to the former basketball player to reports last month the couple is expecting a baby girl in July.

Yao said before the Rockets' game on Wednesday night that where the baby is born is a "private" matter.

"We just need some space," he said. "It's just between me and my wife."

He said he appreciated the positive feedback shown by his fans.

"We're excited about a new member of the family," he said. "We appreciate everyone who has given us good wishes. I really want to say thanks for that. It's a good thing for us."

Yao's baby would be an American citizen if born in the U.S. She also could claim Chinese citizenship as the child of Chinese nationals. However, Chinese law does not recognize dual citizenship.

A few say it would be a betrayal of China, not to mention the Chinese basketball team could be denied a future basketball star. But most say they support Yao and don't care which country claims the baby.

"Yao Ming is an individual, not a political tool," said one comment on popular basketball Web site Hoop China. "He has the right to choose where his child is born and what kinds of medical care and education will be available to her. His child's citizenship has nothing to do with loyalty."

"Only an idiot would pass up American citizenship," said another fan on online portal sina.com, underscoring the common belief in China that life overseas is preferable.

Yao and his camp have been tightlipped on the pregnancy and have not issued any public statements on the matter. It was not clear if Yao and his wife were indeed planning to have the baby in the U.S. or how they would handle any citizenship issues.

A number of Chinese celebrities have been criticized for becoming naturalized citizens of other countries. Chinese are subject to stringent visa requirements and some of the celebrities argued it was easier to travel internationally with passports from countries such as Singapore or the U.S.

Baby Yao has captured the imagination of fans in China. They wonder about her potential basketball skills with a 7-foot-6 father and 6-foot-2 mother, who was a center for China.

Scientists have predicted the girl will grow up to be the size of her mother, state media has reported.

SHIT. 2 straight losses for the Lakers. I wonder how Kobe's breath smells?

Try hitting some FTs at least!!

Great battle vs Heat, toz. Once again showing Kobe steps it up against the best of the best, and Dwayne Wade to me is the 2nd best player in the league. He's all round that good.

Stuckey going home day after collapsing

Associated Press

DETROIT -- Detroit Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey was "doing well" and was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon following his collapse on the bench Friday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

All tests done at the Cleveland Clinic came back normal, the team said. He was returning to Detroit and will undergo further tests.

"He's doing well," Pistons strength and conditioning coach Arnie Kander told The Associated Press on Saturday morning.

Stuckey spent the night at the hospital for observation while cardiologists checked him out. He was conscious and breathing on his own as he was taken to the hospital after collapsing into Kander's arms on the bench during the third quarter.

He was wheeled off the court on a stretcher and the medical staff put an oxygen mask on his face before he was put into an ambulance.

Stuckey missed two games in 2008 after feeling dizzy and lightheaded during a game.

In that game, Stuckey squatted with discomfort in the final seconds of the second quarter, stood up with his hands on his knees and later patted his chest rapidly while talking to Kander.

"It was more dramatic this time because it was on TV," Kander said. "I think he's going to be OK. When we talked last night, he sounded normal."

Report: Iverson facing trouble

ESPN.com news services

Multiple NBA sources say Allen Iverson is facing alcohol and gambling issues that have derailed his career and threaten his post-basketball well-being, Stephen A. Smith of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported in a column published Monday.

According to multiple NBA sources, there is widespread concern that the four-time NBA scoring champion, who left the Philadelphia 76ers in late February to deal with his daughter's illness and will not return this season, "will either drink himself into oblivion or gamble his life away," Smith reported.

Iverson's gambling problem is serious enough that he has been banished from casinos in Detroit and Atlantic City, N.J., according to Smith.

The report comes as Iverson is dealing with significant personal problems. He posted four messages Monday night on his Twitter account, acknowledging he was going through "some very tough times."

"To my fans: You all know that my life isn't perfect. I am going through some very tough times right now, like I am sure that we all do from time to time," Iverson wrote. "However, I will stand tall like always with 'rhino' thick skin."

Iverson's wife, Tawana, filed for divorce March 4, the same day the 76ers announced the All-Star guard would not return for the rest of the season. In the divorce filing, made in Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta, Tawana Iverson said the couple's 8½-year marriage is "irretrievably broken" and sought full custody of the family's five children, child support and alimony.

Iverson, who played 25 games for the Sixers this season, returned to Atlanta in February to be with his family and deal with an undisclosed illness affecting his 4-year-old daughter, Messiah.

Smith, who has covered Iverson closely for years, wrote in Monday's column that Iverson needs someone with "the ideal combination of compassion and toughness" in his life.

And former Temple coach John Chaney said that person is John Thompson, Iverson's former college coach at Georgetown.

"[Thompson] is the one guy who'll have a chance of slowing this train wreck down, who could wrap his arms around Iverson and have an impact, because clearly it has not been done," Chaney said, according to Smith. "But there's still this one question: Will [Iverson] listen?"

Allen Iverson said on Twitter it hurt to hear stories about his personal life that he says aren't true.

"Even though I have become used to hearing people say things about me that aren't true, it still hurts," Iverson wrote. "I encourage you to continue your ongoing support and I want you to trust that this is another obstacle in my life that, with God's help I will overcome."

Iverson started the season with the Memphis Grizzlies but only played three games, amid disagreements over playing time, before announcing a short-lived retirement.

He signed with the 76ers as a free agent in December, making a tearful return to the city where he spent his first 10½ seasons, won four scoring titles, earned the 2000-01 MVP award and led the Sixers to the 2001 NBA Finals.

Iverson was traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2006 and played for the Nuggets through 2008, when he was dealt to the Detroit Pistons.

good all around game. Kobe nearly got the triple double!

Letting the Suns claw back from 15 down fuuuck, odom was a no show but Lakers kept it poised.

Check out this article on Kobe being Clutch: http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/14218/new-numbers-on-kobe-bryant-in-crunch-time

Peter D. Newmann of NBA Statistics and Information Research has tallied some numbers that take into account this season. Here are some of his findings:

This season, Bryant has made seven of the 12 shots, with a chance to win or tie the game, in the last ten seconds of regulation or overtime.

Bryant's the only player in the last decade who has made seven such shots in a season.

Bryant has made 26 of the 89 potential game tying or game-winning field goals he has shot over the last decade. That's 29.2%, which is slightly above League average.

His game-winners, against the Heat, Bucks, Kings, Celtics, Grizzlies, Heat and Raptors come in a season when no other player has hit more than three such shots. Derrick Rose has the second-most attempts, with eight.

The best field goal percentage, on potential game-tying or game-winning field goals in the last 10 seconds of the fourth quarter or overtime, belongs to Chris Paul. He has hit three of his four shots. Chris Bosh, Chris Duhon, Tim Duncan, Raymond Felton, Rudy Gay, David Lee, Rashard Lewis and O.J. Mayo are all two of three. This season, the League as a whole makes just 26.7% of its shots in that situation.

Over the last decade, by field goal percentage the best shooters in this setting have been Carmelo Anthony (13-28, .464), Pau Gasol (9-22, .409), Tony Parker (11-29, .379), Chris Paul (9-24, .375) and Shawn Marion (10-28, .357). Bryant over the same period is 26-89 (.292).

Bryant has attempted by far the most such shots of anyone over the last decade. His 89 is trailed by Vince Carter's 69, Paul Pierce's 57, Dwyane Wade's 51 and LeBron James' 50.

Bryant's 26 makes also lead the League, followed by Carter with 20, Ray Allen with 17 and Allen Iverson's 14. Carmelo Anthony, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki and Paul Pierce have each made 13.

Davis denies intentionally hurting Shaq

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Boston's Glen Davis denies he intentionally tried to hurt Shaquille O'Neal in a game earlier this season, calling the accusations "crazy."

O'Neal is expected to miss the rest of Cleveland's regular season after tearing a ligament in his thumb when Davis blocked his shot in a game in Boston on Feb. 25. After the block, replays seemed to catch Davis squeezing O'Neal's hand on Cleveland's next possession.

Davis says he was simply battling O'Neal for position and didn't know the hand was injured until O'Neal called a timeout and said his thumb was broke as he walked toward the bench.

Davis texted O'Neal after the incident and says O'Neal responded, "Don't worry, I'll be back."

Both played at LSU. Davis calls O'Neal one of his favorite players growing up, and the day he met O'Neal for the first time was "the highlight of my life."
