THIS HERE BE POST #2000 FOR ME, AND I'M GONNA TALK ABOUT ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALL TIME ALBUMS, 2000 FOLD BY STYLES OF BEYOND.
I first took a liking to this San Fernando Valley duo when Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park decided to recruit them into contributing heavily into his Fort Minor album. The inclusion of a rock remix to one of their songs in the game Need for Speed: Most Wanted, as well as seeing them live at the Fillmore for the Fort Minor tour, helped increase my interest, so when I found a reissue of this album being sold new at Amoeba Music I had to jump on it, and it's been worth every penny since then.
I'm the type who loves hip hop as a true/complete music genre, and it makes me cringe when people think making songs revolve around "having a conscious message" or otherwise prioritize certain topics and subject matter over making actual music is what's absolutely required for "real" hip hop. Fuck that. I can tell you right now that 2000 Fold isn't about any kind of guilt-trip or deep story or whatever--the majority of the subjects in the album simply focus on how "awesome" and "badass" these two guys are--it's all about pairing up great beats and great flows for great music.
Ironically one of my favorite tracks does tell a little bit of a story:
And for some of that aforementioned "badass" vibe going on, here's another favorite of mine:
And here's another:
One of the most notable things about this album is that it's only available as a "censored" release, with all instances of cussing bleeped or mixed out...yet these guys are so good that you won't even notice the lack of cussing save for only a few songs in which it's obvious they tried to say something.
Searching for more songs off this album on YouTube or torrents or whatever should be quite easy, but I suggest actually spending money on a copy and supporting these guys if you can, whether legal download or physical CD at your local record store. It's released on an independent label so no need to worry if you're accidentally supporting some RIAA bullshit or whatever. The followup album, Megadef, is also kickass.
