Smirnoff Signature Mix Series Presents Reworked Iconic Hip Hop Tracks From Nas, Buckshot, Nice & Smooth, and More

NEW YORK, March 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The makers of Smirnoff vodka announced the launch of the second annual Smirnoff Signature Mix Series, a campaign designed to bring together respected artists in the hip hop community to recreate clearly original versions of iconic hip hop songs, with newly-mixed interpretation. Legendary artist Nas is teaming up with Marsha Ambrosius, formerly of Floetry, to rework his Grammy-nominated single "If I Ruled the World"; Buckshot and Kardinal Offishall are putting an original spin on Buckshot's memorable underground hit "I Got Cha Opin"; and Nice & Smooth are joining musical forces with Pac Div to create a new interpretation of "Funky For You".

The Smirnoff Signature Mix Series is part of the brand's ongoing commitment to foster and promote both established and emerging musical talent. This is the second installment of the acclaimed program. Last year's Smirnoff Signature Mix Series celebrated reworked classics by acclaimed artists Common, Q-Tip, and KRS-One paired with renowned producers Just Blaze, Cool & Dre, and DJ Premier. These exclusive tracks reached millions of radio listeners and nearly 90,000 visitors to SmirnoffSignatureMixSeries.com downloaded the singles.

"It was a pleasure working with Nas again," said Marsha Ambrosius. "Smirnoff gave us a great opportunity to put a new twist on a classic record, and I'm excited to be a part of the project this year."

The first single will launch on Smirnoff.com beginning March 5th, and all three songs will be available for free download exclusively on the site. Smirnoff Signature Mix Series is a comprehensive program supported by radio, digital, and video promotion as well as out of home advertising and retail point of sale. The program will be activated nationally in cities including New York, Atlanta, Washington D.C. and others. Top-tier radio and club deejays across the country will also receive a limited edition vinyl album containing all three new songs.

Posthumous J Dilla album Jay Stay Paid on the horizon, totally legit

This February marked three years since J Dilla's passing, three years which could have been his most productive, coming up as he was at the time of his death. In the absence of his dedicated and prolific work methods, the world has seen a few posthumous releases - legitimately or not, people have scoured Dilla's hard drives for fully formed and casual ideas alike. Ultimately, releases done with the right intentions have been welcomed warmly, The Shining and Ruff Draft among them, and now Jay Stay Paid, a 25 track collection of beats executive produced by none other than "Ma Dukes" a.k.a. Dilla's mother, who was extremely close to her son during his final moments and during the recording of the classic Donuts. If that isn't cred enough, Jay Stay Paid was culled under the musical supervision of acclaimed producer Pete Rock, who was high up in Jay Dee's mind when it came to beat production.

Mixed and arranged by Pete Rock, the album is mostly instrumental, but features a few familiar voices such as Black Thought and MF Doom (who has recently added his voice to one or two other Dilla beats in various contexts). It comes out June 2 on the Natural Sounds label.

Just wanted to show this, there's this function i discovered recently, Hip Hop Karaoke Toronto!  You pretty much rap a song of your choice infront of a crowd!  Pretty cool. I heard they boo you if you botch lyrics, but its all in good fun =)  They had like Masta Ace up in there for the 1 yr ani last year.  This year, they had maestro.

Method Man was going to pay his bills ... but then he got high.

Despite recent reports that the rapper is so broke that his 2008 Lincoln Navigator was repossessed to pay back taxes, Method Man — whose real name is Clifford Smith — insists his cash flow is just fine. In fact, he says, his penchant for marijuana is to blame for the mishap. Citing the Wu Tang member for being  $52,503 in arrears on his personal income taxes, the state Department of Taxation showed up at the Staten Island native’s home at 6 a.m. March 19 with “four NYPD cops and the repo team,” Meth told us. “I knew why they were there. It wasn’t like ‘Oh my God! Noo!! Don’t take it!’ like it is on that TV show [“Operation Repo”]. I was half-dressed, and it was so early that I just said, ‘Okay, you’re taking the truck. ... Aight.’”

The back story, according to the rapper, is simple. “Myself, I’m a pothead,” he said on the set of a video shoot for his new album, “Blackout 2,” with Redman. “It’s no secret. Everyone knows that. I go on the road and forget everything else. Sure, [the tax department] sent letters to my house saying, ‘We need this money.’ They started sending them in 2002.

Here it is, 2009, and I never paid this s— because I don’t think like that!” “I could have easily just written them a check for whatever amount, but no — I waited until they knocked on this door and were like, ‘We got your truck and we outta here,’ ” he laughed. “Now I’m thinking we’ve gotta get our truck back, which means I have to get all my paperwork together,” the rapper continued. “That means days of going through mail, ’cause I got mail like woah.

I’ve found checks from 2005 that have never been opened yet. And we’re talking a significant amount of money! But I never opened [the tax department’s] letters ... so this is how the tax man came to Meth’s house and took his truck. Not because I was broke! I got plenty of money!” When we referenced the famous Afroman song “Because I Got High,” Method Man just laughed. “Exactly!” he said. “Because I got high, I forgot to pay. It was stupid. I’m an idiot for that.”

Straight MCing. No Hype Man. Pretty violent with all the wigga action lol, a bottle was thrown, geeks just standing there not knowing to dance or to break they neck.  GZA just stood and rhymed non stop, going through Liquid Swords, beneath the surface, Pro tools, Wu-Tang classics, ODB tribute. A good 1.5 hrs too. FINALLY!! Got to see a founding WU-TANG member besides Meth.

   

He did the Wu-Tang symbol. The MC was hilarious - said "Y'all uneducated rap fans gotta stop shouting Wu-Tang! say GZA!"
