Yuki..why..” The last time I heard her called my name.
“
Mayu..I can’t do this anymore.. I can’t make you happy..Our lives are so different I’m afraid I cannot give you the life you wanted..”
Those were the words I spoke to her before I turn my back and leave as quickly as I can, I didn’t had a chance to listen to her because it might change my mind. I can’t even look at her face specially her eyes.
I was born not fortunate, parents died when I was young so I manage to live on my own. Working while studying is hard so I decided to stop in school to work, because if I choose the other way to stop working and study I will definitely starve and be kick out in my aparto.
Two months passed I got another work, in morning I’m working as a sales assistant in a combini store and from mid afternoon till night I’m working as an entertainer mascot for children.
“Yuki!” Someone called me when I was about to hop on the train.
“Tomomi chan..” It was my classmate Kasai Tomomi.
“How are you? I’d never seen you this past few months.. ”
“Ano..I’m just busy working so that I can save and be back to school soon..So how are you guys?” I asked back because I don’t wanna answer the how are you question she’s been asking, because I’m really not ok physically and especially emotionally.
“Good thing I caught you..Here take a look at this.. Everyone is invited” She handed me an invitation.
“Owhhh..Homecoming event..I’m really invited? I mean you know I stopped..”
“Of course you are chiyuu! I hope you can make it yuki.. I know someone who’s really dying to see you..” She giggles and I know who that person shes is talking about.
“I’ll try..You know I’m working and I need permission..” We depart ways waving goodbyes. Deep within me I really want to go and I know I can make it, the only thing bothering me is her. I just don’t know how to react when I meet her because I know I can’t resist her.
Until that day has come.
“Yuki chan your shift is over, you’re going to attend an event right? Go now or else you’ll be late” My manager told me.
“I guess I won’t attend anymore, I’ll do the overtime because it’s crowded and I wanna help you guys”
“Nah we can manage besides me already gave you permission on this” I just nod and follow my manager’s words.
When I got there I saw my classmates and friends talking, laughing, dancing and enjoying the night. Except for this particular person, my eyes were very keen on her. Despite all the swarm around her I can tell she’s sad. All alone in the table sipping her lemonade eyes were looking for someone and my heart is positive that her eyes were looking on me. Well I hid myself beneath the hall and just peek at the scene. No one has ever notice me, wearing a hood and sunglasses I felt like a criminal hiding in the dark.
“Mayuyu! Let’s dance! Come on..” Rabutan our classmate grabs her.
“Sumimasen..I’m not in the mood to dance” She declined and eat the lemon in her drink, the reaction of her face change due to the sourness which made Rabutan amused looking at her.
“If that so..I’ll stay with you..”
“Eh no..I’m fine..I know you want to dance..I’m not just in mood..”
“Mayuyu can’t lie to me, I know you’re waiting for her..Am I right?”
"......” She nods, keeping myself near and let my ears concentrate to hear their convo, I’m not a criminal now I’m a stalker!
“Tomomi should’ve asked where is she working so that we can visit her” Rabu made the ambiance light.
“To be honest, Tomomi chan gave me a hope to see Yuki again tonight..” These words break my heart, and I felt like I wanna expose myself now. But at the other side of my brain is stopping me and I agree.
“Because until now I didn’t understand why she had to leave…me.. ” she continues
“Yuki has deep reasons right?”
“Uhn..She unconfident on us..Saying she can’t make me happy..She’s a burden to me..Our living status and all..”
“Maybe she’s really looking forward on the future with you, of what she can do and what she can’t..That’s why she felt timid” Rabu’s words were true I’m insecure I’m scared and I’m a coward. My reason is shallow to give up Mayu, but that’s how I felt. I need to be someone she can be proud of someday not like this, a peasant girl working twice a day yet still broke.
I left the event with a pain in my heart, the pain of my own doing yet I can’t go back the things the way they’re used to be now. This is reality I claimed it to myself and I know everything has a reason. Days gone by same routine everyday but today I decided to take a new route, every night after work I change my way home taking the long cut direction so that I can see their house and glance the light of her room outside when I pass by.
Sometimes I throw stones on her window and immediately hide on the bush when she opens it. Giggling myself on my trick just to her face wondering for the culprit who threw that. I noticed she’s been sleeping late these days. Usually I go home 9pm and I know she’s still awake at that time, but when I got my overtime this week and been release at 11pm she’s still awake. Makes me worried of course I hope she’s doing fine.
“Yuki chan! Holiday is coming so we had a new event for our mascot activities” My manager excitedly told me.
“That’s great..What’s that event then?”
“Jaannnn..” She showed me a red costume with a belt on it.
“Eh? Santa?? Santa Claus?” I confound.
“Hai! This is your new costume Yuki! This would be easy you will just sit on a chair, kids and kids at heart would just fall in line and talk to you and tell you their wish, at the end you will gave them a small token”
“Chotto..What about my voice?”
“No problemo dear..We already prepared on that we have a gadget on that”
“Sounds fun!” I really exclaimed because this is my favorite season of the year.
The event of Santa has started and attracts people specially kids, it was fun and not tiring at all because I was just sitting, talking a bit, listening to their wishes and give them some goodies of happiness.
Somewhere outside
“Alfred san..What’s in there? Why is it so crowded?”
“Ahh that’s the yearly Christmas Bazaar, and that crowded thing there is where Santa Clause is sitting many children’s and young adults go there to make a wish, it is said that its effective..”
“I wanna go there..”
“Miss Mayu? Are you sure?”
“Hai..”
“You want me to accompany you?”
“Ah no need..Just stay here in the car..I’ll be alright..”
“Just call me immediately if something happens onegaishimasu..”
“I will..Arigatou..”

Passing by the crowded place*
“Excuse Sir is this the proper line to Santa? ”
“Hai..” The father figure guy answers.
“203 and I’m 234..Need to wait a little further..”

“Yuki Chan..Just tell me if you need a break ok? Your substitute is ready..” One of my co worker whispers me.
“Arigatou..I guess I need to finish until 235..” I responded, I discern someone in my view not far behind as the number 235 drew nearer in my sight. My heartbeat starting to race, twin pigtails black hair wearing a familiar dress in my eyes it’s her. Number 234 I can’t be wrong it Mayu. My hands were getting cold and my face is getting warm despite of the cold weather. Im not talking anymore in the kids sitting on my lap I just nod and pat them then give them goodies and go my eyes were just looking at her directly. In my mind I’m confident she won’t recognize me, because of my outfit I became chubby, wearing a fake long beard, wearing eyeglasses, an elf hat and specially my voice.
“234 it’s your turn darling..” The staff called her finally.
I paused for a sec as our eyes met clearing my throat before I say my intro greeting “Hohohoho..”
“Santa san!” She happily smile to me, I miss her smile, the smile that can only melt my heart.
“Yes pretty girl..Tell me what’s your wish..”
“Santa san before that can I sit on your lap too? I’m not that heavy..” So cute how can I resist her?
“S..sure..” Faking my smile my chest thumps really hard as I smell her scent, I wanna poke her cheeks when she smiles, I wanna hug her tight when she moves closer to me. “Now..tell me what’s your wish mayu..”
“Ha? You know my name??”
“Ah..it’s on your tag..Hohohoho” I almost spill it.
“Yeah right..I have a tag..Santa..”
“....hai…”
“I’m wishing for my happiness..”
“Are you not happy?”
“I am..but..it was before..I’m wishing to bring it back..”
“You’ll be happy for sure..”
“NO..Literally..I want that someone to come back..” Her wish moved me.
“Is that someone really special to you?”
“Yes..” she bowed down and had this serious sad face “She’s my happiness..”
“You still want her even if she left you?” I furiously asked
Shook her head “I don’t care..All I know right now is I wanna be with her no matter what, I want her to know that.. ”
“……….” I didn’t say a word
“Santa san..Please grant me this wish..I don’t know why I beg you this but…”

Bell ringing*
“Times up!” the staff cutting off the scene, I saw her sad face really believing in me to grant that wish. I looked at her as she leaves calling the next number to have my break. Talking to the last person, I felt not in mood my mind ss floating. Mayu’s words were sealing me, so I decide to make it quick. As soon as the last person finish I took my break and runs outside finding the girl I wanted to see, with the crowded people in me it’s so difficult and children is starting go at me.
“Santa! Santa! Santa!” Kids blocking my way
“Santa lost his reindeer and Santa needs to find it..” Fooling the kids to stop them from cuddling me and I’m glad they bite my phrase. I know she’s going to the parking lot so I headed there right away and I’m right. Before she could open the car I really shout hard “MAYU!!! MAYU CHAN!!” panting as I run towards her and hug her quickly from behind.
“Mayu..” Breathing hard “I’m sorry..” saying it all over again to her
“Santa San?” She faces me, and I forgot I still have this gadget on my neck to change my voice I took it off along with my beard and other accessories on my head revealing her my face.
“Mayu..It’s me..” Hug her again, my tears rolling in my cheeks. “I’m sorry for being so stupid..for leaving you for my dumb reason..I made you suffered so much..Please forgive me..I can’t go on without you..I don’t care anymore if I ate once a day and if I work 3 times a day, it doesn’t matter anymore..Without you all my efforts are useless..I want you back..Onegai..”
“Yuki..” She hugs me back and that felt good “I don’t know what to say all I know is I’m really happy..” she sobs “Even if you leave me how many times you’re my one only Yuki, my happiness..”
“You’re not just my happiness Mayu..You’re my life..” I kiss her forehead and wiped her tears as she smiles.
“YUKI CHAN!!” some staff shouting, calling my name, gesturing it’s my turn again.
“Mayu..I need to go back..” Holding her hands tight
“Gambatte Santa Yuki!” cheering me “I’ll be waiting in my house, My parents will be happy if you spend your Christmas Eve with us..”
“I will..Wait for me! I promise to make this Christmas very memorable with you Mayu..” I wink at her as she looks at me going inside again to do my job.
“SANTA SAN!!!” she shouts
“Eh?”
“THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY WISH COME TRUE!” I smile and gave her my flying kiss that she captured with both hands putting it in her chest smiling sweetly.
