Don't really know why, but I suddenly felt in the mood for a Halloween film, so I put on Trick r' Treat. It's an amazing film, that somehow has some of that magical 80s adventure film feel that so few films after that era have had.

Some parts of it are a bit too gory for me (the part that deals with the myth about razor blades in chocolate 8D ), but it's still such a great film. This is definitely my #1 Halloween film.

Hmmm though now I need to get ready for Christmas. What are some of your favourite holiday films/specials?

Let's review some stuff.

Toy Story 3 8.5/10
I didn't expect this to live up to the hype, but it did. Interesting story, amazing graphics, and a nice mix of old and new characters. The only thing that bugged me was that RC was among the toys that got discarded earlier on. No way a 17 year old kid would throw away his RC car!

Grown Ups 6.5/10
Kevin James, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider and Steve Buscemi. Yet, there were hardly any laughs to be had. Highlights were Buscemi's performance and David Spade getting kicked in the groin TWICE.

The Men Who Stare at Goats 5/10
Another movie with 4 good actors; George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey. But this movie SUCKED. Boring.

Despicable Me 7.5/10
I liked the animation style. The accent of the main character got a bit annoying, but it's ok. The main issue I had are the 'minions' who are too childish. Still, this movie had some funny moments. Especially the beginning.

Get Him to the Greek 7/10
This started out really interesting, but after a while it dragged on long too long. A bit more jokes and bit less drama and a shorter duration would've made this better. Still good though.

How to Train Your Dragon 8/10
I LOVED this movie. Seriously. It's like, all the best parts from Avatar + Vikings. Great movie, I was glued to the screen

I just watched an amazing film called Boys on the Run. It's a Japanese drama/comedy from 2010, and really worth watching.

Plot revolves around Tanishi, a kind of awkward guy who works for a small gachapon firm.

http://www.nipponcinema.com/trailers/boys-on-the-run-trailer

It's one of the better films I've seen lately, and to be honest it made me think of the forum  There's plenty of pervy stuff going on, plus most of the action takes place in geeky Akiba 8D There's also a positive community aspect to it since Tanishi's co-workers give him the confidence boost he needs to go out and do something about the situation he finds himself in. I don't know. I just felt like this should be the official JPH!P film or something  .... :nervous

The film is also filled with Taxi Driver references 8D. Fun, fun, fun.

Solomon Kane - 6/10

Predictable and unoriginal in every single way possible, but enjoyable.

Finally saw Toy Story 3 and as expected an amazing movie to wrap up the trilogy. Hilarious, packed with adventure and the ending was perfect. I really got emotional over those darned little toys.

Also saw The King's Speech which was enjoyable, although not quite as impressive as I expected given the hype.

Last movie I saw was Green Hornet.

I hadn't seen any previews, so I had no idea going in what it was about. The movie wasn't bad, and there were certainly some funny scenes. The movie did have some weird disconnects though. It's a comedy, but it's quite dark. There's a lot of murder of innocents and the violence is pretty heavy-handed. The main characters (Seth Rogan as the Green Hornet and Jay Chou as Kato) weren't particularly likeable or relatable. That made it a lot harder to gloss over killing innocent policemen by the dozens. The action scenes were well choreographed, but the 'bullet time' was cliched and over used.

Overall, I'd give it a C.

So how come when a film has a 14 year old girl hellbent on murder (True Grit) it's deemed Oscar worthy, but a film with a group of girls also hellbent on murder (Battle Royale) is deemed sick and repulsive viewing?

Clash Of The Titans - 6/10

Sam Worthington is still a questionable actor (as is most of the acting here), but it was surprisingly more enjoyable than I expected.

We just finished watching Full Metal Jacket (1987 - one of Stanley Kubrick's last films) in English class. I think I'm traumatized. I don't really like war movies in the first place but our unit was about war so we watched it. God, the part when Private "Pyle" goes psycho scared the shit out of me. As did the ending with the teenage girl-sniper. But I guess it goes to show you how messed up war is.

strawb3rrykreamさん, you hit nail on the head. It is a very disturbing movie, and frankly quite chilling in exposing how much brainwashing and indoctrination goes on within the world of war. Not all wars can be avoided, but glorifying war should be always be avoided.

I'm disappointed that this is perhaps my first time seeing this thread.

The last film I saw in the cinemas was True Grit.

I regret that I saw this with a lot of people who I graduated with from high school rather than a select few, because the "I can't understand what he's saying" and "Where's Matt Damon?" got on my nerves. I was highly impressed with the acting. The character portrayals were exquisite, but I couldn't find myself connecting to the plot at all. As a story, it seemed too generic and while I generally appreciate movies with slow progression, there wasn't enough depth to the characters for me to enjoy the film as much as I would have liked. Needless to say, the film had a certain charm created by the use of wit and suspense that I couldn't resist.

Worth watching once and then a second time in the comfort of one's home - 7.5/10

I also watched Despicable Me for the first time ever with a couple of friends at the beginning of the month.

The movie was pretty cute with the minions and children. However, this is where my appreciation pretty much ends. During the entire film, I think I laughed twice, both at parts that were shown in the trailer. I'll admit that there were parts where I could imagine other people laughing, but they weren't terribly numerous. The plot was painfully predictable and failed to hold up the film like a plot should for an animated movie. I feel like I might have liked this film a bit more had not hearing everyone around the world talk it up.

Yes, the children were adorable, the minions rocked socks and I could relate to a struggling evil genius for some reason, but the movie had no backbone for me - 6.5/10

At the beginning of the week, I joined my university's film society and the guy in the stall asked me what my favourite genre was. I had absolutely no idea how to answer. When I was younger, I used to love comedies, but genuinely funny films aren't too easy to come by nowadays. I wonder what my cinematic weakness is? :?

The LXD's Jon Chu Reportedly Set to Direct Paramount's 'G.I. Joe 2'

We've been waiting to hear who was chosen to direct the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, as multiple candidates have been discussed. Deadline is now reporting that Paramount has decided upon Jon Chu to direct G.I. Joe 2. Supposedly it was between Jon Chu, F. Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen) and Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra, who seems to have plenty of other projects. But apparently they like Chu and are "working out his deal" now. He just wrapped Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (even a director's cut) for the studio, directed Step Up 2 and 3D, and is the creator of "The LXD". Yep, he will be taking over G.I. Joe.

As a replacement for Stephen Sommers of the first G.I. Joe movie, he's definitely a step up since that movie was quite a mess, but he's also making his action, non-dance-related debut with this, so let's hope he knows what he's doing. Production will begin in the fall on G.I. Joe 2, which was scripted by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Deadline says they're trying to get Channing Tatum back, obviously, since he's Captain Duke, but the rest of the cast will have to be pulled back. Honestly, considering I don't care too much about this, I'm curious to see what Jon Chu can do and how this will turn out. We'll keep you updated.

Blade Runner Prequel/Sequel in the works

They don’t have a script, haven’t cast a star, and are still thinking about who to hire as a director. They don’t even know if it will be a prequel or a sequel (or if it’ll have voice-over narration). But Alcon Entertainment, producers of The Blind Side and The Book of Eli, have purchased the rights to make a movie based on the characters and settings of Blade Runner, the 1982 sci fi classic about a replicant-killing cop who falls for a fembot. “We have some ideas that we’re not in a position to discuss yet,” Andrew Kosove, Alcon’s co-CEO, teases to EW. “But from our point of view, the thematic core of the original movie — what does it mean to be a human being? — is even more relevant today than it was when the film came out. After all, we’re living in the industrial age of technology.” Kosove and his fellow CEO, Broderick Johnson, are partnering on the project with Bud Yorkin, one of the producers of the original film. “That picture turned out so well — it’s just been selected for preservation by the Library of Congress — that for a long time I was afraid to try to make another one,” Yorkin says. “But now seems like the perfect time. We just need to find the right writer and director.”

They could always try Ridley Scott, although it’s uncertain if the guy who made the original Blade Runner would even be interested. His rep have yet to return requests for comment, but he’s pretty busy right now making Prometheus, the sci-fi quasi-prequel to Alien starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender.[/size]

^

I hope they don't plan on casting Harrison Ford again. First of all, he's too old to be Deckard now and secondly, Ridley Scott and him aren't on good terms with one another after the director's cut of Blade Runner was released :nervous

This seems like one heck of a bad idea to me, but I'll probably watch it out of respect for Scott's Blade Runner.

Kick-Ass 5.5/10
It started out OK, but then it got really violent. The fact that there's an 11 year old girl kicking ass makes the whole thing even stranger. It's a weird mix of genres which doesn't work that well imo. In addition, the initial moral of the story is shoved aside for mindless action.

New in Town 5/10
Standard, boring.

Ponyo 8/10
Awesome artwork, once again. Some of the parts dragged a long a bit too long, but overall it's a sweet and pretty movie.

Funny People 6.5/10
I like Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, but this movie was so so. The whole story line about his ex wife made the movie less unique. Weird mix between funny parts and depressing parts.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 6.5/10
If you don't think Kevin James (with mustache) is funny you can avoid this movie. I liked it haha.

Year One 6.5/10
Soooo many missed opportunities. This could've been a really funny movie, but they opted for the obvious and sex related jokes instead.

Coraline 8/10
This was great. Creepy artwork, nice style... I'm not familiar with the book, but I quite liked this movie. I'd love to see parents take their children to see this in the cinema and see the children freak out haha.

The Expendables 7.5/10
I didn't have high hopes for this, but it turned out to be pretty cool. Stallone and Schwarzenegger poking fun at each other and such. Mindless action, but they don't take it too seriously.

Drive Angry 5.5/10
Horrible movie. Stupid plot, lame action and effects... Amber Heard is hot and that's the only good thing about this movie.
