Nash: Shaq a fit with Cleveland

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- One star who has played with Shaquille O'Neal thinks he'll fit in just fine with LeBron James.

"I think he realizes that he's not in the prime of his career, so to speak," two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Nash's Phoenix Suns traded O'Neal to the Cleveland Cavaliers last month, where the 37-year-old center will try to bring James his first championship.

O'Neal is "still a great player, but LeBron is going to be the focal point," Nash said. "I think he's happy with that. At the same time, he'll get a lot of opportunities to be in the spotlight, and he's great at it."

Nash, who recently signed a two-year, $22 million contract extension to stay with Phoenix through the 2011-12 season, is confident another Suns star won't be traded. Amare Stoudemire has been the subject of plenty of rumors -- the forward has one year left on his contract and wants the maximum in any new deal, something the budget-conscious Suns may not be willing to do.

"I don't see him leaving," Nash said. "I just see him having a phenomenal career and being in Phoenix a long time."

Nash has seen a former teammate and close friend, Dirk Nowitzki, struggle through a difficult few months that has nothing to do with basketball. Nowitzki's former fiancee was arrested at the Mavericks star's Dallas home in May and faces charges in two states. She has told The Dallas Morning News she is pregnant with Nowitzki's child.

"You worry for a friend when they're in a situation like that," Nash said. "But I also know he'll bounce back really strong from this. We're going to see him be a dominant player in this league for a long time. And I think off the court this will only help him grow, mature and have a better life."

The 35-year-old Nash said Monday that the three remaining years on his contract with the Suns might be his last in the league. The point guard seems well-prepared for his post-basketball career.

He's got a production company, a charitable foundation, and is now involved in a new sports venture called MakeItPro -- a Web site that allows young athletes to network, manage team schedules, get training and nutrition advice from experts and buy equipment.

"It's one of the opportunities for kids I never had growing up," Nash said. "I can only imagine what a powerful tool it's going to be for kids."

Pacers sign point guard Watson

ESPN.com news services

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Pacers have signed free-agent guard Earl Watson to a multiyear contract.

Sources with knowledge of the contract told ESPN.com that Watson received a one-year deal worth $2.8 million.

The 6-foot-1 veteran was waived earlier this month by Oklahoma City. He also has played with Seattle, Memphis and Denver in eight NBA seasons.

Watson adds depth to an Indiana team that has already lost one guard, Jarrett Jack, in free agency and is likely to lose another, Marquis Daniels, this offseason. Last week, the Pacers declined to match Toronto's $20 million offer sheet for Jack. Daniels' agent has said he is heading to Boston.

Watson has averaged 7.3 points and 4.6 assists over his career, including 6.6 points and 5.8 assists last season for the Thunder.

WOO HOO ODOM!!

WERD L.

Odom sez: “I always wanted to come back because we won the championship,” Odom told ESPN.com. “I’m playing for the biggest brand in the world. And I’m playing with the most fluid, talented center in the world in Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum’s coming back and of course Kobe Bryant.

“But to now get an opportunity to play with Ron Artest, a guy I’ve known 16 years, it means a lot. I told Ron Ron a few weeks ago I couldn’t walk away. I still had to fight. Everytime negotiations didn’t go the way I thought, I just took a step back, like them pulling the offer off the table, I just knew I had to fight.”

Man, I was shitting bricks all summer. Fucking Ariza jumping ship. Artest being a wildcard. I can finally enjoy my Lakers Championship merchandise in peace lol

Hornets sign forward Diogu

By Marc Stein
ESPN.com

The New Orleans Hornets, after swapping Tyson Chandler for Emeka Okafor, added further to their frontcourt by signing free-agent forward Ike Diogu on Wednesday.

Terms of the contract were not immediately available, but Diogu is regarded as a low-cost option who has yet to reach his full potential after playing sparingly in the past two seasons.

Diogu, 25, appeared in only 29 games last season for the Portland Trail Blazers and Sacramento Kings but did enjoy a few productive spells with the Kings after arriving in February via trade, averaging 9.2 points and 3.9 rebounds in just 14.2 minutes in 10 games.

Lakers waive Chinese G Sun

Associated Press

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Lakers have waived guard Sun Yue, the Chinese national team star who won an NBA championship ring during one quiet season with the club.

The move was announced Friday.

Sun played 10 games with the Lakers, scoring six points in 28 minutes. He also played two stints in the D-League, but struggled to find a regular role in Los Angeles.

The Lakers, who drafted Sun in 2007, held a $736,000 option on Sun for next season. He was waived the same day Lamar Odom agreed to a multiyear deal to return to the club.

"With the talent level and depth of our roster, the situation simply doesn't provide an opportunity for Sun Yue to get the chance to play that he deserves," general manager Mitch Kupchak said.

Hall opens Jordan exhibit

Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Basketball Hall of Fame has opened a Michael Jordan exhibit before his enshrinement next month.

The display features items from Jordan's NBA career and from his time at North Carolina and with the 1992 Olympic Dream Team. There is also a batting glove from Jordan's brief foray into baseball.

The exhibit is made possible in part by a $250,000 donation from Nike and features several pair of the superstar's Air Jordan shoes.

Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA titles and now runs basketball operations for the Charlotte Bobcats. He will enter the Hall of Fame on Sept. 11 with former NBA stars David Robinson and John Stockton and coaches Jerry Sloan and C. Vivian Stringer.

NBA fines three for schedule leaks

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- The NBA has fined three teams an undisclosed amount for leaking details of their schedules before the league released them.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves were penalized, an official with knowledge of the decisions told The Associated Press on Monday. The official requested anonymity because the fines weren't publicly announced.

The NBA will release its 2009-10 schedule on Tuesday afternoon. The league forbids teams to release any details before then.

New NBA season kicks off Oct. 27

ESPN.com news services

In a replay of sorts of last year's opener, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics will launch the 2009-10 NBA season -- only this time LeBron James has some welcome firepower in new teammate Shaquille O'Neal.

The league on Tuesday released its schedule, which begins with Shaq's Cleveland debut on the Cavs' home floor on Oct. 27. On the back end of that TNT Tuesday doubleheader, Kobe Bryant and the rest of the Los Angeles Lakers will receive their championship rings prior to facing the Clippers.

Washington plays Dallas and Houston meets Portland to round out the opening night schedule (which is considered a two-date affair). The rest of the league debuts in a 10-game schedule on Wednesday the 28th, which includes an ESPN doubleheader of New Orleans versus San Antonio followed by Utah versus Denver.

Also on the Oct. 28 docket: defending Eastern Conference champion Orlando, with Vince Carter now aboard, hosting Philadelphia; the Cavs playing the second night of a back-to-back, in Toronto; the Celtics also getting the early back-to-back treatment as they host Charlotte; and the Pistons deciding whether it'll be Rodney Stuckey, Richard Hamilton or Ben Gordon coming off the bench as they open at Memphis.

ESPN once again will carry a schedule predominantly of Wednesday and Friday games during the regular season.

Other schedule highlights include a Nov. 6 game between the Cavs and Knicks in New York (ESPN). It will be LeBron's first appearance at what Knicks fans hope will be his future home since he had a triple-double last February, which was later rescinded.

On Thanksgiving night, Orlando's Dwight Howard is back in his hometown of Atlanta to play the Hawks, and the Bulls visit Utah on the next-to-last stop of their annual early-season Ringling Bros. road trip in which they will not play any home games between Nov. 14 and Dec. 2.

Among many so-called alumni games, newly minted Piston Gordon plays at Chicago on Dec. 2; Toronto's Hedo Turkoglu returns to Orlando on Dec. 16 for his first game against his old team; and O'Neal comes calling to Phoenix on Dec. 21.

For the second straight year, the NBA serves up a five-game feast on Christmas Day -- Heat-Knicks at noon (ESPN), followed by Celtics-Magic and LeBron-Kobe-Shaq (or Cavs versus Lakers) on ABC, and Clippers-Suns and Nuggets-Trail Blazers the nightcap doubleheader on ESPN.

It will be the fourth time in the five years since their partnership ended that Bryant and O'Neal will meet on Christmas. O'Neal was traded to Cleveland in June; James succeeded Bryant as MVP last season.

On the day of Super Bowl XLIV, Eastern Conference heavies Orlando and the Celtics meet on Boston's home court (Feb. 7, ABC).

One week later, the All-Star Game will play out in the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium, with a record crowd for an NBA game expected to attend. Commissioner David Stern's annual league address is the night before, as is LeBron's promised dunk contest debut.

Report: Rambis, Wolves talk again

ESPN.com news services

Kurt Rambis might be a head coach before many anticipated.

Long considered the heir apparent to Phil Jackson on the Lakers bench, the Los Angeles assistant might now be the leading candidate to coach the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Rambis was flying to Minnesota Wednesday morning to meet again with the Wolves. He has already had a second interview, but team owner Glen Taylor recently said that he will have to sign off on the hiring of a new coach.

Rambis played nine seasons with the Lakers, winning four titles with the "Showtime" Lakers of the 1980s. He has been a Lakers assistant coach for 10 seasons and filled in for Jackson when he missed games for medical reasons.

Rambis appeared to be close to getting the Sacramento Kings coaching job this summer, but negotiations fell through, and the position ultimately went to Paul Westphal. Rambis also spoke to the Philadelphia 76ers about their coaching vacancy, but that job went to Eddie Jordan.

If Rambis does indeed get the Wolves job, he would beat out ESPN analyst Mark Jackson and Houston assistant Elston Turner.

The Wolves parted ways with coach Kevin McHale after a 24-58 season. McHale had left the front office to take over for Randy Wittman, who started 4-15.

David Kahn took over as general manager and has spearheaded a busy offseason in Minnesota. The Wolves drafted point guards Jonny Flynn and Ricky Rubio in the first round and pulled off numerous trades to remake the roster.

Kahn recently went to Spain to try to help facilitate Rubio's buyout from DKV Joventut.
