Source: Johnson makes HOF

By Peter May
Special to ESPNBoston.com

Former Boston Celtics guard Dennis Johnson, who played with the original Big Three and helped Boston win two NBA titles (1984 and '86) and Seattle win one (1979), has been elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame, according to a a source.

The official announcement is expected Monday morning.

Johnson, who died of a heart attack in February 2007 at the age of 52, played 14 seasons in the NBA, the final seven with Boston.

He was considered a defensive specialist and one of the top guards of his era. Johnson was one of 19 nominees announced in February and many believed his inclusion in the Hall was long overdue.

"It really doesn't come as a surprise to me," said former Celtics general manager Jan Volk. "The surprise is that it took so long. Anyone who ever played with or against Dennis Johnson knew that no one competed harder. And the bigger the game, the better he played."

Johnson, known as DJ, was taken by Seattle in the second round of the 1976 NBA Draft, starting a remarkable career that spanned three teams (the Sonics, Suns and Celtics) and included the following: first-team All-NBA (1981), second-team All-NBA (1980) and from 1979 to 1987, either first-team or second-team All-Defense. He was a five-time All Star and was named the 1979 NBA Finals MVP.

Johnson was a self-made man in the basketball sense. He was one of 16 children raised in a tough neighborhood in Compton, Calif. He didn't make the varsity at Dominguez High until he was a senior and he sat on the bench most of the time. (He called himself "a bencher.") College was out of the question and he figured at the time that he had as much a chance of playing in the NBA as he did of becoming a brain surgeon.

Johnson drove a forklift in a tape warehouse. He worked in a liquor store as a stock boy and cashier. But he played competitively in local leagues and caught the eye of a community college coach, who was intrigued. Jim White of Harbor Community College is the man who put Johnson on the path to a career in basketball, plucking him off the streets of San Pedro and offering him a spot on his team. The rest, as they say, is history.

Larry Bird said Johnson was the best teammate he ever had. Who knows if Bird was serious, or if he understood the need to stroke DJ. But there was no denying Johnson coming up big when the games meant the most. He never feared taking the last shot. And, lest we forget, it was DJ who made the move to accept the pass from Bird off that famous steal in Game 5 of the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals. DJ was at half court when Bird made his move to steal the lazy inbounds pass. Then, he made a reverse layup with Joe Dumars threatening him.

Johnson, who played four years with Seattle and three with the Phoenix Suns, had his No. 3 retired by the Celtics in 1991.

Krzyzewski: Nyet to Nets

By Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski told ESPN.com Monday morning that "I wouldn't have any interest in the job," even if incoming New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov offers to make him the highest-paid coach in the NBA.

The Bergen (N.J.) Record reported Monday that Prokhorov, despite Krzyzewski's earlier public expressions of disinterest, has continued to target Coach K as his No. 1 choice to coach the Nets once the NBA's board of governors approves his purchase of the majority ownership of the franchise from Bruce Ratner.

Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson is currently the NBA's highest-paid coach with a $12 million salary, and the Record said Prokhorov might be willing to offer Krzyzewski in the range of $12 million to $15 million annually.

"I haven't been contacted," Krzyzewski said as he rode the team bus to Duke's shootaround in preparation for Monday night's NCAA championship game against Butler in Indianapolis. "I wouldn't have any interest in the job. You would be flattered if someone would offer you a job, but I would not be interested."

Krzyzewski strongly considered jumping from Duke to the NBA in 2004 when he was offered the head-coaching position with the Lakers, but he has maintained in the years since that he is now totally committed to Duke and to USA Basketball, where he has signed to coach the U.S. senior men's national team through the 2012 Olympics.

Coach K reiterated at his news conference Sunday in Indianapolis that he plans to stay at Duke even after he retires from coaching.

"I haven't changed in that regard," Krzyzewski said Monday, adding of the Lakers opportunity in 2004: "The Lakers thing, with their franchise and my history with Kobe, if you were going to do it, I don't know how you can jump for anything better than that."

Still no timetable for Bynum's return

By Dave McMenamin
ESPNLosAngeles.com

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Lakers starting center Andrew Bynum has missed the last eight games with a strained left Achilles tendon and while there is no official timetable set for when the 7-footer will return, head coach Phil Jackson told Bynum on Tuesday not to feel pressured to rush back for the five remaining games left in the regular season.

"I'm not holding my breath on a timetable," Jackson said after the team's practice that ran about a half-hour longer than usual after an off day on Monday.

"It's going to take some time and we just don't know when. Obviously we'd like to have him play a couple games at the end of the season, but this morning I told him, 'If that's not possible, we'll take whatever we get in the playoffs at that time.'"

The Lakers have five games in the next eight days before the regular season ends on April 14.

Bynum underwent a second MRI on the Achilles on Monday that Jackson described as "inconclusive as far as any major injury going on."

Jackson said Bynum will accompany the team on its upcoming two-game road trip so he can continue with his therapy and be close to the training staff that will also travel with the team through Denver and Minnesota.

Jackson said Bynum is experiencing "discomfort" and starts to feel "tender and sore" after exercise that requires him to jump, but remained positive about how the 22-year-old was making progress.

"Everything is forward with him," Jackson said. "It's a matter of rehabilitation and getting himself back in shape.

"I think he's optimistic. I really do. I think his mood is good. He wants to be playing obviously, but he can't. But he doesn't see that it's going to be a serious thing that's going to linger and have any ramifications for his future or career or anything like that. It's just a matter of time."

Last season Bynum returned to the Lakers lineup from a torn MCL in his right knee with just four regular season games remaining after sustaining the injury in late January and never quite found his rhythm throughout the Lakers championship run.

Pau Gasol said that Bynum's return will be different this time around.

"I think it won't be as hard as last year," Gasol said. "I think his injury is not as complicated as it was last year. He hasn't been out as long so it will be easier, the process. We hope that he can come back before the regular season is over so he can get back into the flow of things and in the rhythm, but it's up to his injury to say or determine where he's at. We don't want him to rush it."

Bynum is averaging 15.0 points and 8.3 rebounds on the season.

When asked how he was feeling as he walked out of the practice facility, the fifth-year veteran said, "About the same," and left for an appearance to award a prize to a poster-contest winner at a local YMCA.

How Will D-Wade's Situation Play Out?

ESPN.com

Henry Abbott, TrueHoop: Wade has complained openly about wanting to play with better teammates. The Heat have schemed blatantly to get major cap room. They are required to sign about a dozen more players. And there are tons of free agents on the market. It's a lock the Heat will add lots of new talent. It's not at all a lock, however, that one of those new players will be LeBron James or Chris Bosh. James, I think, will be in Cleveland, and deep-pocketed front offices in Chicago and New York will be pushing hard to add top-shelf talent. Most likely is that the Heat convince Wade to stay with a revamped roster in which he's the only superstar ... unless New York or Chicago can talk Wade into leaving.

J.A. Adande, ESPN.com: Wade will weigh the chance to play with his buddy LeBron James in New York, or return to his hometown of Chicago. But would the Knicks be able to surround them with enough other good players? Isn't his game too similar to that of Derrick Rose, the star he'd be joining in Chicago? Ultimately it will come down to the one thing that rules all: He can make the most money staying in Miami.

Chris Broussard, ESPN The Magazine: I think Dwyane Wade is the most likely superstar to stay put. There's no reason for him to leave Miami, since it's a great city, with a great front office and the cap room to sign another max free agent. I think Miami will sign Amare Stoudemire to play next to Wade, though I wouldn't be surprised if it's Bosh instead. Wade will likely visit Chicago and New York, just for fun, but I think he's definitely with the Heat next season.

John Hollinger, ESPN.com: I see Wade checking out his options until he's confident the Heat can lure in another star, and then joining the recruiting pitch and both players announcing they've agreed to terms in unison. That player will almost certainly be a 4; we just don't know if it's Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Carlos Boozer or David Lee.

Chris Sheridan, ESPN.com: In talking to him about free agency back in training camp, Dwyane came across as very comfortable with the concept of playing a long, long time in Miami, but he also wants them to hit the jackpot to a certain degree in free agency this summer. But I also think he and Riley are on the same page more than people realize regarding the franchise's plans for the future, and I honestly cannot envision him leaving a place where he is so comfortable -- especially with what Miami has to offer to those living the bachelor lifestyle that D-Wade is now living.

I expect Wade and Riley to try to recruit LeBron James to come to Miami on a four-year deal with a third-year opt-out, making the argument that they can team up for a three-year stint in the sunshine together, then opt out and do their long-term max deals in 2013 if they so choose. Also, depending on where the cap comes in, Miami can also add another nice free agent (perhaps Carlos Boozer) if it can clear Daequan Cook's salary off its cap before July 1. If LBJ is not in the cards, I think Boozer will be the Heat's top target.

Marc Stein, ESPN.com: D-Wade doesn't want to leave Miami, but he doesn't want to be first-round fodder anymore, either. So the Heat have to deliver in free agency to keep him, because the threat from Chicago is real. The good news? Pat Riley has a history of making personnel splashes when he has trade assets or funds available.

The combination, furthermore, of Riley's determination to score a power play and the resurgent Amare Stoudemire's fondness for Florida have established Stoudemire as Miami's top target. You just hear too much chatter on the front-office grapevine about Amare winding up in Miami to ignore it. The Suns definitely don't want to lose him without compensation, so maybe this ends up as a sign-and-trade, but Miami has the requisite cap space and interest to steal Stoudemire outright. I also think Amare and D-Wade are pretty good pals, more than maybe we realized when the season started.

Arenas to spend two days in jail

Associated Press

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas began serving his sentence Friday night for bringing guns into the team's locker room.

According to Arthur Wallenstein, director of Montgomery County Corrections, Arenas arrived at the Montgomery County jail at 7:40 p.m. Arenas must spend two days there for medical screening and classification before being transferred to the county's Pre-Release Center, a halfway house.

Arenas was sentenced March 26 to 30 days in a halfway house for bringing weapons into the Verizon Center. Corrections officials in Montgomery County agreed to let him serve his sentence there, as part of an agreement with the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

Arenas pleaded guilty to a felony gun charge in January, and has been suspended until the end of the season by the NBA.

Arenas also received two years of probation, a $5,000 fine and 400 hours of community service that can't be performed at basketball clinics.

"Our thoughts are always with him. We're glad that it's going to be done, and he'll be able to move on," Washington coach Flip Saunders said after the Wizards' 106-96 victory in Boston on Friday night.

Wizards guard Shaun Livingtson also commented on Arenas.

"He is who he is for a reason," Livingston said. "He's done so much for this team. I have nothing but positive things to say about him. But all I can do is focus on me."

Andray Blatche looked forward to Arenas' return.

"Gil's going to come back next season humble," Blatche said. "We miss him and we can't wait to have him back."

Wade not ruling out 2010 worlds

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Dwyane Wade still doesn't want to rule himself out yet for the world championships this summer, even with family reasons that could make it difficult for him to play.

Saying there were "a lot of things said prematurely from both sides," Wade reiterated his commitment to USA Basketball and hopes he can take part this summer.

However, his divorce trial is scheduled to begin in June. Wade is asking for sole custody of his two young sons.

"I've been committed to USA Basketball since 2004 and I'm still a part of the team no matter if I can compete or not and that's the main thing," Wade said Sunday night after Miami's 111-98 victory over the Knicks.

"I don't want to say I don't want to play because I want to be a part of the team, it's just if I've got something to do, that's first and more important."

Wade and LeBron James have both expressed doubts about playing because of various summer plans. Both can be free agents this summer, along with fellow 2008 Olympian Chris Bosh, and that could also make them unavailable.

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo expects players who want to compete in the London Games in 2012 to also play this summer. However, he is aware it will be impossible for everyone to be in the team's training camps in Las Vegas or New York and will be understanding of certain absences, especially for players who have been part of the program and have "equity."

"We know there are personal situations that can arise from marriage to contract to injury and that is why we have a 28-man roster," Colangelo said this week. "This is a great opportunity for some of them and this is all about the team and that is all part of the process of fielding a team."

Wade was one of the captains of the U.S. team during its run from 2006 to 2008. Even when he was injured and couldn't play during the 2007 Olympic qualifying tournament, he still traveled to Las Vegas to be with his teammates.

He hopes he can still have a role with the team -- even if it's not this summer.

"If I can be there in Vegas or in New York, with the things I have to do, then I would do that," Wade said. "I'm a part of the team and if I could play, I will. If I can't, then they will understand."
