LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Lakers will unveil a statue honoring Hall of Fame guard Jerry West during this season's NBA All-Star weekend, multiple sources confirmed to ESPNLosAngeles.com.

Los Angeles is the host city for All-Star weekend, running from Feb. 18-20.

West retired as the Lakers all-time leading scorer before Kobe Bryant eclipsed his point total of 25,192 points during the 2009-10 season. Known as "Mr. Clutch" during his playing days, West won a championship with the Lakers in 1972 and holds the distinction of being the only player in league history to be named NBA Finals MVP while playing on the losing team (1969). West was a 14-time NBA All-Star and was named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history in 1996.

West transitioned from Lakers backcourt to the front office and worked for the team as the head coach and a scout before being named general manager prior to the 1982-83 season. With West as the GM, the Lakers went on to win seven championships and he was named NBA Executive of the Year in 1995.

The statue will be the fifth to be erected at Staples Center and the third that is Lakers-related, following Wayne Gretzky, Magic Johnson, Oscar De La Hoya and broadcaster Chick Hearn.

Johnson's statue was dedicated during the last NBA All-Star Game to be played in L.A. in 2004.

Lakers executive vice president of business operations, Jeanie Buss, alluded to the statue in her new book, "Laker Girl," writing that it was her "dream" to commission another statue in time for the 2011 All-Star Game.

"Who is the next Laker deserving of the honor?" Buss writes. "Some would say Jerry West. Others would favor Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar]. It's a tough choice."

The choice was Mr. Clutch.

Greg Oden to have surgery

Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden, the former No. 1 draft pick whose short career has been marred by injuries, will have microfracture surgery on his left knee and will not play this season.

Oden hasn't played since last December because he needed surgery to repair a fractured left patella. The Blazers say this operation, announced Wednesday night and scheduled for Friday in Vail, Colo., will repair damaged cartilage and is unrelated to the patella injury.

Oden, the first name announced in the 2007 NBA draft, missed his rookie season because of microfracture surgery on his right knee. The procedure stimulates cartilage growth.

He was having arguably the best season of his career when he broke his left kneecap during a game last December against the Houston Rockets. He was averaging 11.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks as a starter.

The 7-footer has often been compared to former Portland center Sam Bowie, who the Blazers famously selected in front of Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft.

The Blazers picked Oden instead of Kevin Durant, who went to the Oklahoma City franchise and has blossomed into one of the NBA's best players.

Another Portland big man, Bill Walton, was selected by the Blazers with the No. 1 pick in the 1974 draft, but he was dogged by a broken nose, foot, wrist and leg over his first two seasons before helping the team to the NBA championship in 1977.

It had been expected that Oden would play this season, but at the start of fall practice he said he wasn't close. When asked if he may return by Christmas, Oden shrugged his shoulders and threw up his hands.

The former Ohio State star has played just 82 games over parts of two seasons, averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.

The Blazers announced last month they would not offer Oden a contract extension. He was the first No. 1 pick since Kwame Brown not to get one at the end of his rookie contract.

Oden will be a restricted free agent next summer and the Blazers will be able to match any offers for him.

In Oden's absence, the Blazers have largely relied on center Joel Przybilla, but Przybilla was also injured last December and required knee surgery. The Blazers have since started veteran forward Marcus Camby in the middle.

The Blazers were further hurt at the position at the start of this season when Jeff Pendergraph, who was backing up Camby, injured his knee and required season-ending surgery.

Przybilla has already returned to practice and has said he expects to be back by Thanksgiving.

Real tough break for Oden, poor kids having the worst luck.

Vladimir Radmanovic makes Phil Jackson's short list of characters he's coached

Jackson, who includes Dennis Rodman, Ron Artest and Sasha Vujacic among 'interesting' players, says he misses the erratic things Radmanovic, now with Golden State, would do.

By Mike Bresnahan

November 21, 2010|10:05 p.m.

Vladimir Radmanovic was back in town, making it the perfect time to ask Phil Jackson who would be atop the list of characters and flakes he has coached.

Jackson has seen quite a few, most famously Dennis Rodman and most recently Ron Artest, with Radmanovic definitely in the mix for top-five consideration.

"I've got a couple on this team that have a chance to make it," Jackson said Sunday. "[Artest] is an interesting, very interesting, player. Sasha [Vujacic] is an interesting person for me. I know he irritates a lot of people. For me, it's kind of humorous."

Source: Orlando Magic Discuss Gilbert Arenas Trade with Washington Wizards

The Orlando Magic have engaged the Washington Wizards in an ongoing trade dialog centered around Wizards shooting guard Gilbert Arenas, Orlando Pinstriped Post has learned. What Orlando would send Washington in return for the three-time All-Star is less clear, but the proposed deal likely includes shooting guard Vince Carter, according to a source. Wizards big man Andray Blatche, Magic forward Rashard Lewis, and Magic center Daniel Orton could also be involved. Both teams have a mutual understanding of what the trade might include, the source says, and it's unclear what factors are holding up the trade. What is clear around the league, however, is that Magic President of Basketball Operations Otis Smith has his eye on Arenas. If Orlando is to make a major trade this season, Arenas will likely be the target.

CBS Sports' Ken Berger reported the Magic listened to trade offers regarding Arenas this summer, but rebuffed the Wizards due to concern over the salary remaining on his contract, which runs for three seasons after this one, at a total cost of $62.4 million. In early November, Marc Stein of ESPN.com reported "the Magic have cooled on the notion of a Vince Carter-for-Arenas exchange," citing "NBA front-office sources." However, the source who spoke to Orlando Pinstriped Post contradicts Stein's report, saying Orlando has indeed initiated the discussions with Washington of late.

A series of knee injuries limited the former Arizona Wildcat to 15 games between the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons, while a suspension for locker-room gunplay, in addition to more knee trouble, held him to 32 games last season. He's played in 13 of the Wizards' 16 games this season, averaging 18.1 points, 4 rebounds, and 5.3 assists while shooting 39.5 percent from the floor and 37.2 percent from beyond the arc.

Smith and Arenas have a longstanding relationship dating back to their days with the Golden State Warriors, where Smith served as the Executive Director of Community Relations and, during the 2002/03 season, Executive Director of Basketball Operations. Golden State selected Arenas with the 30th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft. He won the NBA's Most Improved Player of the Year Award in 2003, averaging 18.3 points, 4.7 boards, and 6.3 assists. He joined the Wizards in free agency that summer, and then re-signed with them in the summer of 2008.

Earlier this week, Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel reported the Magic are "willing to take a step back" via trade if it improves their long-term outlook.

In the Magic's win over Washington last Saturday, Arenas scored a season-high 31 points and shot 14 free throws in what one may fairly term a vintage performance. His game-winning runner attempt, however, glanced hard off the glass.
