Sources: Joe Smith to Lakers

ESPN.com news services

NEWARK, N.J. -- The New Jersey Nets agreed to trade Terrence Williams to the Houston Rockets in a three-way deal that will land them Los Angeles Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic and a pair of first-round draft picks, sources confirmed to ESPN.com.

The trade, which has been agreed upon in principle, will also send Nets veteran power forward Joe Smith to the Lakers, while New Jersey will receive Los Angeles' 2011 first-round pick and Houston's 2012 lottery-protected first-rounder, sources said.

To make roster room for Williams' arrival, sources said, Houston has struck a deal with Sacramento that will send Jermaine Taylor to the Kings for a future second-round pick.

"Welcome welcome, to all my jersey fans an people it's been real I love y'all an thanks, to HOUSTON what uppppp 'go Rockets' lol," Williams tweeted Tuesday night.

The acquisition of the two first-round picks now gives the Nets a total of five first-rounders over the next two seasons. Aside from their own 2011 and 2012 firsts, they also have the Golden State Warriors' lottery-protected 2011 first-round pick, which was acquired in the Marcus Williams trade back in 2008.

"I just found out [about the trade] when I got to the arena tonight," said Smith. "I found out right before the game.

"I had a similar situation when I left Oklahoma City and went back to Cleveland for the second time. The toughest thing about it is leaving the guys I've been with for the short part of the season. Just seeing them grow and develop and do the right thing on the court to get wins, that's always a tough situation."

The deal cannot be finalized until Dec. 15, according to NBA rules that prohibit offseason signees from being traded -- and Smith fits that bill.

Williams was announced as inactive by Nets head coach Avery Johnson before Tuesday night's game, but Johnson would not divulge why. When asked if it was because of bad behavior, which has caused Johnson to place Williams on the inactive list earlier this season, he responded, "no."

Johnson had no comment when asked about the impending trade during his postgame press conference after the Nets' 82-77 loss to the 76ers Tuesday night.

Nets general manager Billy King refused to confirm or deny if a trade was imminent.

Williams, a first-round pick in 2009, has been fined this season for showing up late to practices and he was sent home from another game for failing to follow team policy. He was shipped to the Nets' D-League affiliate in Springfield, Mass., for a couple of games before being brought back to the team last week.

"I don't know anything," Vujacic said when asked about the trade after the game, speaking to L.A.-based reporters in the hallway after trying to leave the locker room before the media crush came in. "[Lakers spokesman] John Black just told me there's a trade rumor that I'm involved in and I actually don't have any [cell phone] service here at the arena so I haven't talked to anybody.

"We'll see. I don't know what to say right now at the moment, it's just a rumor, so if it happens we can talk later on."

Lakers coach Phil Jackson was asked if he thought Smith could help his team.

"Well, John Doe could, the way we're playing," Jackson said. "We're hoping that John Doe would be a big guy."

No timetable for Yao Ming's return

By Ric Bucher
ESPN The Magazine

Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets will examine all options before determining his future after another stress fracture was found in his left ankle Thursday morning.

Yao, as is his nature, was upbeat in light of a setback that throws a shadow over his future.

"I haven't died," he said. "Right now I'm drinking a beer and eating fried chicken. What were you expecting, a funeral?"

Only a few days ago, a source close to Yao expected the 7-foot-6 All-Star center to return to action from a bone bruise in his left ankle for the Rockets' post-Christmas three-game homestand that starts Dec. 27 against the Washington Wizards.

Yao was more optimistic, saying he was targeting the team's three-game road swing through California that begins Sunday.

But a routine exam this week discovered his injury, sustained in the first quarter of a Nov. 19 game against the Wizards, was a fracture.

He explained his even-tempered response to the discovery by pointing to a friend in China who, at 20 years old, appeared to have NBA-caliber talent.

The friend sprained his knee and the subsequent exam revealed he had bone cancer. His knee was replaced with an artificial one, thereby ending his playing career and NBA dreams.

"Compared to that," Yao said, "mine is nothing."

Yao was surprised by Thursday's discovery because he had no pain in his foot or ankle. The fracture is not in the area reconstructed by surgeons two summers ago in hopes of alleviating the foot and ankle problems that had forced him to miss 86 regular-season games over a three-year span.

He had missed two games over his first three seasons in the NBA, despite an annual offseason schedule playing for the Chinese national team.

Yao had prepared himself for anything since having his left arch surgically lowered in an attempt to reduce the stress on his foot and ankle.

The same surgery alleviated similar issues for Miami Heat center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who has since played more than 700 games without a recurrence.

But Ilgauskas is also at least 50 pounds lighter than Yao and was in his early 20s when he had the surgery. Yao turned 30 in September.

"The doctor told me there was no guarantee it would work, so I never put myself where I was expecting the best," Yao said. "I was always prepared for the worst."

Yao and the Rockets will take the next few days to go over the tests and determine a course of action. A decision is expected to be announced on Monday.

At the time of the reconstructive surgery, Yao told friends he would retire rather than have surgery and endure a long rehabilitation again.

As of Thursday, he refused to reiterate that stance.

"Right now, I still hope I can come back and play," he said.

Yao is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $17.7 million this season. He recently purchased the Shanghai Sharks, the team with which he started his professional career in the Chinese Basketball Association.

He became the first foreign-born and developed player to be selected first in an NBA draft when the Rockets took him No. 1 in 2002.

Magic serious about Gilbert Arenas deal

Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando Magic president Otis Smith says he has had talks this week with the Washington Wizards about acquiring troubled guard Gilbert Arenas.

Smith said Saturday he would rate the seriousness of the talks at an "eight out of 10" but that "nothing is imminent." He would not talk specifics of the potential deal.

Smith has been a close friend and mentor to Arenas going back to their days together at Golden State. He has said in the past that Arenas' troubles, which includes a 50-game suspension last season for bringing a gun into the Wizards' locker room, are not a concern.

Arenas was at Washington's morning shootaround but did not speak to reporters.

Yahoo! Sports first reported the latest round of talks.

Sources: Vince Carter dealt to Suns

By Chris Broussard
ESPN The Magazine

The Orlando Magic, already in serious trade talks with the Washington Wizards about acquiring Gilbert Arenas, have agreed to a deal in principle with the Phoenix Suns, according to league sources.

The trade returns former Magic star Hedo Turkoglu, along with Jason Richardson and Earl Clark, to Orlando in exchange for Vince Carter, Marcin Gortat, Mickael Pietrus, a 2011 first-round pick and cash considerations.

Orlando, losers of five of its last six games, is also close to acquiring Arenas for Rashard Lewis, sources said.

Magic president Otis Smith told The Associated Press on Saturday that he has had serious talks this week with the Wizards about acquiring Arenas.

Smith said he would rate the aggressiveness of the talks at an "eight out of 10" but that "nothing is imminent." He would not talk specifics of the potential deal with The AP.

The two teams have been discussing a deal involving Arenas off and on since last summer.

Arenas and the Wizards have been open to parting ways since Washington landed point guard John Wall with the No. 1 pick and thereby providing a new face for the franchise.

Arenas was suspended last season for the final 50 games by commissioner David Stern after a locker room incident involving gun play with former teammate Javaris Crittenton came to light last Dec. 23.

The Magic have plenty of lucrative pieces to package in a trade in addition to Carter's expiring contract. Lewis, who has 2½ years remaining on a $118 million, six-year deal, would line up with Arenas' backloaded contract -- which still has about $60 million left.

Arenas was at Washington's morning shootaround but did not speak to reporters.

"Have we had conversations with a number of teams regarding guys on our roster? Of course we have," Smith said. "Do we like losing five of six? Of course not. Yeah, there's conversations with Washington regarding Gilbert Arenas."

The latest round of talks, first reported by Yahoo! Sports, come as no surprise.

Smith has been a close friend and mentor to the troubled guard going back to their days together at Golden State, when Smith was in the front-office and Arenas was a young player. Smith has said in the past that Arenas' troubles, which, in addition to last year's 50-game suspension, included faking an injury to sit out a preseason game this year, are not a concern.

"The length of his contract and health probably have been more of my concerns," Smith said. "With the length of his contract, you're always concerned about taking on more, of course. That's always been one of my concerns. I know a little bit more detail about Gilbert off the court and who he is as a person.

"He's probably similar to the guys we have in the locker room right now. I would say that sometimes good people make dumb decisions, and he's one of those guys."

Arenas, a three-time All Star, has had several knee problems that limited him to 47 games over the previous three seasons. But while playing alongside -- and often behind -- Wall this season, Arenas has showed flashes of his old self.

He has averaged 17.3 points and 5.6 assists per game this season, including a season-high 31 points in a loss against the Magic on Nov. 27. The Magic have made strong pushes to acquire Denver's Carmelo Anthony and New Orleans' Chris Paul, but with those talks showing little progress, they might be forced to make another move.

Orlando has lost five of its last six games, including a frustrating 1-3 West Coast trip, falling from first to fourth in the Eastern Conference. The Magic were set to host Philadelphia on Saturday night, and Washington was hosting Miami.

"I circled the West Coast trip on our schedule a long time ago," Smith said. "The West Coast trip, to me, was going to decide whether or not we're going to either fix our woes or continue down the same path. I don't think we've played particularly well leading up to the West Coast trip. So, we were on the West Coast trip and some of our woes continued, so you start to explore opportunities that are out there."

For Dwight Howard and friends, they got rid of deadweights for more deadweights. GOOD LUCK RON JEREMY! Can't wait for D12 to sign with the Lakers.

Men Against Boys. Just seeing Gasol and Bynum stretching like that, if they played crappy teams like Toronto 4 times a year, they'd go on a 13 game win streak too.

Walton stepping it UP!! You just know Kobe gonna bounce back like that.

Phil Jackson dislikes Christmas games

By Dave McMenamin
ESPNLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- It's an annual holiday tradition: put the star on the tree and put the Los Angeles Lakers on TV.

And Lakers head coach Phil Jackson is tired of it.

"It used to be two teams," Jackson said. "It used to be Phoenix and L.A. and New York and Boston or New York and Philly or somebody on the East coast. Now I see that they have like six games on Christmas."

There are actually five games scheduled by the league this year -- the Chicago Bulls at the New York Knicks; the Boston Celtics at the Orlando Magic; the Denver Nuggets at the Oklahoma City Thunder; the Portland Trail Blazers at the Golden State Warriors; and the Miami Heat at the Lakers.

"I don't think anybody should play on Christmas Day," Jackson said. "Soccer teams don't play this time of year, they take a break. I don't understand it.

"When I was in the CBA, we had a commissioner who had a Christmas Eve game. I had to call him up and say that's the holy time. ... You just have to keep reminding them that this is a special day."

To get an idea of just how often Jackson and the Lakers play on the winter holiday, consider it will be the 13th Christmas Day game for 15-year veteran Kobe Bryant. He has played more games on Dec. 25 during his career than any other calendar date.

Jackson coached a handful more times on Christmas back when he was manning the sidelines for the Bulls.

"It's like Christian holidays don't mean anything to them anymore," said Jackson, the son of a minister. "We just go out and play and entertain the TV. It's really weird."

The Lakers' much-anticipated matchup with Miami's Big Three won't feature both teams at their best, according to the coach.

"I don't know if you can adequately even prepare for these games," Jackson said. "You don't have a walk-through on the day of the game. It's just a difficult game. ... Your little kids are putting batteries in toys to put their Christmas presents together, there's all kinds of crazy stuff going on and now your head's got to get focused on a game in the middle of the afternoon on Christmas Day? That game is just real hard to measure how to bring focus to it."

Lakers home games usually tip off at 7:30 p.m. PT but the Heat game Saturday will be played at 2 p.m. PT.

"It is what it is," Jackson said. "We have to go to work and we'll do what we have to do and make the best of it."

When asked if he would bring up his issue with playing on Christmas to NBA commissioner David Stern, Jackson replied with a smile, "He'll see it."
