Go for the cliché!

It's Valentine's day after all, which is a day of cliché anyways

I love you, my readers <3 Yorosiku~~
Cliché fic is mostly inspired by a fic from Yvyleewoods, a really great French author who wrote really nice fics ^^ It's in French, but here's the website so I credit some parts of this OS
http://yvyleewoods.xooit.com/portal.phpNOW FINALLY. LET END THIS TWO DAYS MADNESS. Oh by the way... OOC for the main character
AtsukoxMinami
You just have to ask me“It’s not because we have the same friends that I’m going to respect you!” A voice screamed.
“Same goes for you! Like I would ever pay attention to someone like you!” Another one replied harshly.
The two voices kept on going, though no one listened to them anymore. It was another usual fight in this school. Since the first day they had met, even if they were in the same circle of friends, Minami Takahashi and Atsuko Maeda spent their time fighting. It wasn’t really surprising, considering the fact that they were total opposite. Their friends were used to it. They would just ignore them each time a fight started, even if they would rather have then stay quiet. There would be no death anyway. At least, that was what they had promised them… Who knows what was really going on with them?
“If you keep acting like this, no one will want to date you! EVER!”
“I’d rather be alone instead of changing partner each week! I mean, seriously, a player like you will never get into a serious relationship! That’s ridiculous!”
People started moving away as the voices got closer to them. They didn’t want to block the way of the most popular duo of the school. They were legend. Students would often bet on who was going to give up first, but so far, they didn’t know the winner. The two were always stopped by their friends. It was a real game, even a competition, to try to figure out who would find the most colourful insult to describe the other. Their war had the reputation to be the greatest fight in school’s history.
“At least, I’ve known love, unlike you!”
“At least, I’ll know REAL love, unlike you!”
There a short silence between the two before they started even louder, as if this simple sentence had been a provocation. The “love” subject would often appear in the fight, because they had different perception of it. Therefore, they could find even more insults to the other. This subject was enough for them to fight an entire day about, if not an entire week… or even more, if it wasn’t for everyone trying to stop them. They would always end up at the same point though… with different words, but the meaning was still the same.
“Go get some make-up to cover your horrible face already!”
“Yeah? Well how about you go get some make-up remover so people would be able to see who you truly are for once?!”
Atsuko Maeda was a player. The entire school knew her reputation. She was a great friend, not pretentious, superficial or anything but she couldn’t stay single more than three days. She needed someone in her life, and she didn’t have any difficulty to seduce people around her. She would even go farther by dating girls, even though it was quite rare. Her friends loved her, even if they sometimes wished she was more… less… well, not a player. She had everything to find love, but she would just rather not get too serious about it.
Minami Takahashi was the total opposite of her loyal enemy. She had never dated anyone and it was obviously not her priority. She cared about her appearance, but not enough to be called “cute” by guys. She would rather concentrate on her singing skills because her dream was to become a popular in Japan. She, too, had the qualities to be an amazing friend, but Atsuko’s comportment disgusted her. She didn’t like the way Atsuko was dating everyone. It seemed she only cared about breaking everyone’s hearts by playing with their feelings. She also had everything to find love, but since she didn’t care about it…
“Stop talking already! People are annoyed of your harsh character!”
“SHUT UP! You’re only jealous because you can’t have the entire attention focused on you!”
The duo, followed by the rest of the group, appeared, turning a corner of the hallway. They were eight, always together, though they still have friends amongst other crews. Minami Minegishi was known as a loveable and sociable girl, who would always enjoy trying to find a solution to everything. It seemed the infernal duo’s case was unsolvable though… Next were Yuko and Haruna, the “gay” duo of the group, and also of the school. They were always whispering sweet things to each other and everyone, no exception, even the teachers, knew their relationship was deeper than they pretended. Sae Miyazawa, another close friend, was a little ball of energy to everyone. She was smiling most of the time and nothing seemed to be able to stop her. She was with this group, though her best friend, Sayaka Akimoto, was not part of it. She didn’t care about Atsuko’s reputation, but she had been alike until she found true love with a girl named Yuki Kashiwagi. Last was the Tomomi duo, best friends, probably closer than anyone in the school in friendship term. They didn’t try to date as many guys as possible, but they would rather be in relationship than single. They were also known as fashion expert and they would often help others about it.
“Why are we always with her?!” Minami shouted to her proclaimed sister, Yuko.
“Why can’t we just leave her?!” Atsuko complained to Minami Minegishi, her best friend.
They stared at each other for a few second until they started fighting again, under the look of everyone else.
“Don’t you dare repeating what I said first!” Minami growled.
“WHAT? Just know that I said it in my head first, so YOU were the one repeating what I said!” Atsuko replied.
It seemed their fights were getting even more interesting, with more insults than ever. The entire school knew the reason though. The school had an annual dance to respect an old tradition and it was coming really soon, next week, to be more precise. Their fights were more present than ever, because Atsuko loved to remind Minami she would go alone while she had a list of potential boyfriend waiting at her feet. On her side, Minami spent her time teasing Atsuko, saying that tt would never work anyway if she invited so many desperate guys.
In fact, they just wanted to go there in a better situation than the other. However, Atsuko was right about one thing: Minami didn’t do any effort to find someone to go with her. Secretly, the shortest girl didn’t care about it. She really didn’t find it entertaining to dance with everyone, showing to the world how bad she was at dancing. Sure, it could be fun… but it was even funnier to make sure Atsuko’s night would be destroyed thank to her cruel side. She wanted to have the pleasure of seeing the player falling in love for real, just to be left after. This way, maybe Atsuko would be able to understand what she did to everyone.
“Enough already! Just die and go to hell!” Minami yelled, starting to ignore her.
“Oh, sorry but I wouldn’t dare go there.” Atsuko smirked. “I’m sure you already have a reservation to your name.”
“I wonder who would want to go to the bal with them…” Someone said in the crowd. “They will just ruin each other’s night…”
He was so right the two girls just had a staring contest before being interrupted by the bell announcing the end of the day. Even though they were both ready to leave each other as soon as possible, they had a lat exchange before moving apart.
“Fine then. I bet I can find someone to go with!” Minami said proudly.
“You? Find someone? In less than a week?” Atsuko asked, not believing a single word of what she had just heard. “Like that will ever happen… Fine then, if you find someone, you win this time. But if not… you just go alone and dance by yourself without coming near us of the entire night!”
This way, Atsuko could have a peaceful night, Minami would be alone in front of the entire school and she could have fun with people she considered as her friends. There was no way Minami would find someone, so Atsuko already tasted the victory in her mouth.
“Hey wait!” Yuko frowned. “It she doesn’t find anyone, you will go with her! So that it will be fair for the both of you!”
“FAIR?! I’d rather spend the night alone than going there with her. Are you mad?!” Minami screamed.
Yuko was her proclaimed sister, fine, it was normal she wanted to protect Minami’s pride, even just a little. Plus, she didn’t want her to spend the night alone! It would be so boring! If she wanted to two of them to taste their own medicine, she had to force them to change their mind by, at least, supporting each other for one little night.
“Hum… Are you sure it’s a good idea?” Miichan interrupted as the two enemies were about to kill each other. “I think it will just-”
“Make things more interesting, exactly Miichan!!” Sae said excitedly. “That would be so perfect!”
They both didn’t want to look like cowards in front of their friends, but they couldn’t help thinking it was definitely the worst idea ever. Minami suddenly doubted about her chances to find someone at time, while Atsuko was sure she would never find anyone. In both cases, they would end up going together… as a couple… Ewwww no!
“What? Afraid?” Sae smirked to her old “player partner”.
Atsuko frowned. Like she would ever be afraid…but it was Minami they were talking about ! There was no way she would find someone… and she didn’t want to go with her! She was the last person on earth Atsuko would ever accept to date! She’d rather go with a tree instead! Anyone, anything but her! Even some imaginary friends would do!
“I accept!” Minami surprisingly said, totally trying to pretend she could find someone for sure.
“WHAT? I DON’T!” Atsuko screamed.
Once again they disagreed with each other. However, since they all had to hurry, Yuko put an end to this and decided that if Minami didn’t find anyone, they would go as, according to Yuko’s perception, amazing greatest friends ever.
***
“Please! Would you go with me to the bal? I know we’ve never really talked to each other, but it doesn’t mean we’re complete strangers! I look at you sometimes!” Minami begged a random guy in front of her classroom.
The bal was the next day, and so far, she would with her worst enemy. She was asking so many people now, not caring about the way she did it, desperate to find someone at time. At first, she had made efforts, trying to be careful about appearance… now she was just making people avoiding her. Even her friends started to pity her. Atsuko was so afraid that she was even helping Minami to find someone. She would often skip class just to ask people from other classes. Soon, the duo was feared by everyone.
“Oh my god! Just accept to go together! Everyone’s avoiding us like we’re sick or something!” Yuko sighed loudly as they were eating together.
“Kill me instead, that would be less painful!” Minami said.
“I’d rather die.” Atsuko muttered.
“How can you be so mean with each other?!” Haruna asked, shocked.
“Her name is Minami Takahashi.” Atsuko said.
“She is Atsuko Maeda.” Minami answered.
They didn’t expect the hatred to be so powerful. Yet it seemed they finally agreed on something. Sad it was about each other’s dead though… but Haruna and Yuko exchanged glanced. Their voices’ tones were different. They were slowly giving up, they could feel it.
“Come on, Atsuko!” Sae laughed. “Just one night won’t kill you… and I would stop being avoided too! I mean, Yuki doesn’t even want to talk to me anymore because of you two!”
Atsuko totally ignored what she said. If the school saw her with Minami, she wouldn’t even be a player. She would be… associated, linked, related to her! Though she was already because of their legendary fights, but being related because they went to the bal together?! Just to think about it…
“I hate you…” She said suddenly.
She couldn’t stop herself on this one. Thinking about the consequences of everything.. she had so many problems now just because she had tried to help her to find someone… she just couldn’t stop complaining and blaming her.
“I was thinking the same thing about you.” Minami muttered.
“FINE! You two go together!” Miichan exclaimed. “It’s the final decision!”
On those words, she grabbed Haruna and Minami arms, kidnapping them. Atsuko wanted to stop them, but Yuko, who had stayed by her side with Sae, Tomochin and Tomomi, put her hand on her mouth, waving at the trio leaving them.
“I need to teach you a few thing if we all want to have a great night!” She said. “You know, things like not fighting with Minami and stuffs like that…”
“FREEDOM!” Sae claimed. “If you ruin my night, I will never forgive you! I’ve been chasing after Yuki for so long! Do you know how long exactly! ETERNITY!”
She had this sparkles in her eyes, making the two others believing she had really found the right one. On the other side, Yuko just wanted to avoid a murder. If her two friends could spend a great night, then she would have time to give all her attention to Haruna. Of course, they had decided to go together, as great friends… at least that was what they told everyone.
“First thing you need to know…” Yuko said, thinking about a great strategy to make the two of them survive. “Have you ever said “hello” to Minami in a proper way?”
Atsuko sighed loudly. She really didn’t need that. She would have her life ruined. If anyone tried to take pictures, she would kill them.
***
“Ok… now, what will you wear tomorrow night?” Miichan frowned as she was searching for something great in Minami’s closet.
“I’m not going.” Minami mumbled as Haruna just sat on a chair, watching them.
The tallest girl didn’t seem to care about it. She would just watch them, hoping none of them would get killed. She really wondered why this decision had been suddenly made, even if she was impatient for the next day to arrive. Maybe this night would be the best opportunity for the two of them to get to know each other better… if they ever accepted to go. She believed in miracles anyway… Who knew, but seeing how close Minami Takahashi was to kill the girl looking in her closet…
“How come you have so many dresses?!” Miichan, Minami’s nickname, sighed. “You have even more than me and you never wear them! What a waste!”
“I got them from… I don’t remember.” Minami sighed, totally not caring about it. “I don’t like them. I look horrible wearing them…”
“But this one is beautiful!” Miichan said. “If you don’t wear it, why don’t you give them to me?!”
“GO FOR IT!” Minami encouraged her. “I don’t need any of them. I would be even more then enchanted if you took them! Gift!”
Haruna had to stop Miichan, who had totally taken those words seriously. She was about to take them all, under Minami’s encouragements, forgetting about the main reason why they had come here: help Minami to find the perfect outfit for tomorrow night. They both didn’t care how stubborn the small boyish girl was, even if it took all night, they would find something. Maybe they didn’t say it loud, but they were actually really worried about it. Knowing the strong hatred between the two, they had to make sure no blood would be spread that night. Even despite saying the opposite, they knew Minami wanted to spend a nice night, especially if the whole school was going to look at them. They knew Minami wanted to have a great memory of it… She just didn’t want to admit it. She was way too proud, right?
“This one is really nice.” Haruna said, pointing at a short, cute, black dress.
“No.” Minami answered.
“And this one?” Miichan asked, holding a beautiful red dress.
“No.” Minami sighed.
“Or this?” Haruna went on with another black dress with some sparkles.
“No!” She frowned.
“THIS ONE!” Miichan said with a purple dress in front of her.
“Would you stop?!”
“A pink one?” Miichan continued as Minami was being ignored. “You wear pink?”
“How many do you have?” Haruna smiled. “You should try all of them!”
“LOOK!” Miichan screamed. “I found a ribbon! I don’t think you will wear it for the bal… but I can’t believe YOU, MINAMI TAKAHASHI, HAVE SO MANY GIRLY THINGS!”
She heard the door slammed behind her back and turned around, surprised, only to find Haruna sighing. She had been so concentrated on looking for something that she had not even noticed Minami was gone, probably because she couldn’t support this kind of activity anymore. She hated when people saw this hidden part of her. Fine, she liked ribbons. She would wear them all the time, but it was so… so… so embarrassing! She should have burned them! She should have hid them! She would never, ever, EVER, let her enemy see them. That would ridicule forever! Why did Miichan had to find them?! Yes, it was a cute part of her… but she didn’t want them to know about that part, that was why she would never wear it!!!
“Minami, we’re not done yet!” Haruna called.
“I don’t care!”
“I’m sure you don’t want Atsuko to look better than you… After all, you’re going to spend the night next to her… people will never stop comparing you…” Miichan said.
There was a long, very long silence before Minami suddenly came back in the room.
“Where’re the clothes?!” She growled.
Haruna and Miichan high fived and laughed. They knew her so well. Now all missing was to give a call to the Tomomi duo and asked them a few fashion questions.
***
The night everyone was waiting for finally arrived. Miichan went alone, but she didn’t care. She would take pictures all night. Sae was with Yuki, looking happier than ever, while Haruna and Yuko just tried to avoid everyone’s eyes. The two Tomomi had found a respective ikemen to go with them. Amongst this happy crew stood one really nervous girl, Minami. She wore a beautiful, short, white dress that fit her body very well. Her hair was down, curly, and a slight make-up made her skin looked perfect. Atsuko arrived soon after in long black and a bit sparkling dress. Her short hair just fell on her shoulder in a beautiful manner, and her figure was even sexier than ever.
Their eyes met first. Then, slowly, they examined the other from head to toes, looking carefully at everything, as if they were sure the other “deserved” to go with them. Minami couldn’t help thinking the dress was perfect for Atsuko. She felt a little happy inside though, because she knew everyone dreamed to go with Atsuko, and she was the one going with her. People would look at them. It would be the perfect occasion to show them she could be a lady when she wanted… if she wanted. Atsuko had a shock when she saw the little girl for the first time. She had never seen her this way… Now that she looked carefully… she could almost think she was cute… but she erased this thought quickly. She was not. But… this dress… this make-up… the way she was right now… maybe this night was going to have an acceptable level in the end.
“I can’t wait for this night to end…” Minami thought as they started walking toward the buffet.
The night went well. They talked and laughed, even though Minami and Atsuko were never talking directly to each other, always asking someone to “tell the other” something. At least, to everyone’s relief, they didn’t fight, except a few glares. When they finally separated into two distinct groups, Atsuko stared at Minami from a certain distance. She was beautiful, there was no doubt about it. She hated to admit it, but the boyish girl, the cold heart enemy, the asshole she had fight with all year was… really pretty. It was the first time she saw her as a… woman. Not just an immature kid, not an enemy, not just a little annoying girl… a woman. Honestly, she hated thinking this way…
“Damn brain.” She thought as she turned her attention to a group of ikemen laughing. “This one will be my next target…”
On her side, Minami would just ignore the world. She knew everyone would often look at her. It was quite normal though, because it was so unusual to see her this way. She was even surprised of the way she looked. She had to admit Miichan and Haruna had made a real miracle. She could even compete with her enemy at that point! She felt a bit uncomfortable, but still, it was fine for one night. She just didn’t want it to repeat. Of course… She passed her hand in her hair. She was nervous. The night was still long… a lot of thing could happen.
“What are you thinking about?” Miichan asked as she saw Minami was deep in thoughts.
“I can’t wait for this night to end.” Minami said.
There was a part of truth in these words. Even if it wasn’t as horrible as she thought it would be, it was still really unusual for her, and she sure felt better in her running shoes instead of those high heels. She thought the perfume was too much too, but Miichan had insisted for her to have a little spray.
“Come on…” Sae passed by with her girlfriend. “It can’t be that bad! Yuko and I told Atsuko to be nice tonight, why don’t you try to talk to her?”
“No.” Minami answered at the speed of the light. “There’s a limit of what I can do.”
“You are really pretty tonight, Minami-chan.” Yuki smiled. “I’m sure Atsuko would like to talk to you too.”
“Too” Minami thought. She had never said she wanted to talk to Atsuko… Must be Sae who told Yuki how to act.
“Thank you.” She said.
Sae and Yuki started to dance together, far from everyone’s look. They looked cute together. Since a theatre show that occurred last year, Sae and Yuki had gotten really close. There had been a kiss scene in the show, and right after, everyone had started speculating about them. When it had become official, it was not a surprise anymore because everyone was used to it. However, they had to admit they were happy for them. Elsewhere, Haruna and Yuko were laughing together at another table, alone in the world. Anyone passing in front of them was ignored with a great indifference. They were under the look of many people though. Some liked to take some pictures of them, just to show them later and tease them about their relationship. They were so close… they couldn’t just be friends, right? Just like Sae and Yuki had been under the projectors last year, it was their time… and there was no doubt it would end the same way.
A love song started to play, and immediately, many couples started to dance, including Miichan, invited by another cute boy, leaving Minami totally alone. She didn’t really care though. There was no way she going to dance with-
“Hey… want to dance?” Atsuko asked, popping out next to her.
“Don’t you dare freaking me out like this!” Minami muttered.
“Well, excuse me if I’m being polite.” Atsuko frowned.
“Excuse me if I ignore you then.” Minami sighed.
They both stopped talking, though they could feel their friends’ look on them. They must not fight, they knew it… but it was so hard. They wanted to… just yell at each other! It was a dependence! They couldn’t spend one day without fighting or else they would become insane! They just NEEDED to insult each other! It was a game! It was a drug! It was their reason to LIVE!
“So… dance?” Atsuko repeated after a few minutes.
“What?” Minami frowned.
“Oh my god, just come!” Atsuko rolled her eyes, grabbing Minami’s arm and finding a great place to dance.
Seeing how awkward it was for Minami to dance, Atsuko just lead them through the crow, following the music. She took Minami’s hand and felt the little woman froze at this contact.
“I’m just telling you were to place it.” Atsuko rolled her eyes again. “Don’t be such a kid.”
She placed Minami’s hands at the right place, and started dancing. Minami was at a certain distance, making them looking very bad from everyone else’s perspective. Whenever Atsuko would try to reduce the distance, Minami would move back again. It was beginning to be annoying as Atsuko just pulled her closer and hold her. Minami wanted to lead the dance, but she had never danced! It took a bit of time, but as soon as Minami understood the secret message sent from Atsuko, they both added a few centimetres between each other and dance “normally”.
“Why so close…” Minami asked after a few minutes. “And why dance?!”
“Can you please just stop complaining?!” Atsuko sighed. “I’m just trying to prove Yuko I can support you for once…”
The proximity between her body and Atsuko’s made Minami’s heart raced. Without her will, she stared at Atsuko’s eyes. She wanted to look away, but it would only make the dance harder, and she was already bad enough this way. She surprised herself smiling to her, like if it was the only thing to do. Surprised at first, Atsuko awkwardly smiled back. She didn’t really like their situation, but if she had to be polite, then she should just go for it. Seeing Minami this way, so delicate, so… different made her wanting to care about her. She was so innocent. She wouldn’t dare hurt her tonight… she really didn’t know how to act. It was like she was under a spell. She thought about it. She could just put an end to everything… but somehow, she couldn’t. She just realized she didn’t know Minami. There was someone else under the harsh character she yelled at everyday… There was a complete different person…
As for Minami… she was looking at Atsuko in an intense way, as if she just couldn’t believe what was happening. She felt presences around them, but couldn’t notice them clearly. She was lost somewhere with Atsuko next to her. She could understand now, why people admired her and wanted to date her. She was beautiful. She could attract people in less than a second just by looking at them. She had a power… to make people fall for her. Minami could understand it now. She could understand how it felt now… She felt her heart and her mind just thinking the same thing and thought about it. Was it the reason why so many people couldn’t be single for a long time? Was it the reason why people were scared of being alone? If so…
They danced together, the two opposites, for a really long time. Black and white… now reunited.
Suddenly, taken by the magical atmosphere, Atsuko just move closer, making the space between them disappeared. She kissed her without hesitation. Half aware of the situation, taken over by the feelings she felt in her mind, Minami closed her eyes. This contact was sweet, great, slow, nice… and when she got back in the reality she wanted to punched herself. She looked in an empty direction, not knowing how to react. There was no doubt she had loved it. There was no doubt her first kiss was… forever graved in her mind. But soon, many questions appeared on her mind. It wasn’t real. She was just another prize amongst many others. She was just another prey to Atsuko. She had been blind by this situation. How could she have let her hatred for this girl disappear? How could she have been so stupid and not reacted? How could she have been so stupid to accept this dance? Why was she here tonight, with her worst enemy, when all she wanted two days ago was to kill her?
She finally met Atsuko’s eyes, only to see confusion and… something else she couldn’t describe. Mad at her own weakness, she moved back from Atsuko’s arms quickly. There was no doubt she loved this contact… but there was no doubt it was impossible for her to accept this. She could feel some tears in her eyes, but she stood proudly in front of her enemy. In the blink of an eye, she slapped Atsuko in the greatest way possible.
“DON’T YOU DARE DO THAT AGAIN!” She yelled at her in a very serious way before running away, followed by Miichan.
Atsuko slowly put her hand on her burning cheek. Like if she was coming back to earth, she couldn’t understand what had happened. She had been in tons of relationship, including girls. She had known what to do, and when to do things. She thought she was perfectly able to understand signs from people she had in front of her, and Minami definitely had sent her some. Sure, it might not be the best idea to kiss her now, but she didn’t have to try to literally destroy her face either!
She couldn’t find any explanation for this reaction except one: Minami had planned to humiliate her now, tonight, in front of the entire school. She wanted her to be humiliated in front of everyone… teachers, students, ex… there was no other possible situation. She muttered indistinct words and went to sit at her table, under the silence of everyone. She was already planning her revenge in her head. There was no way she would just stay there now. It was war, forever and EVER. She would never forgive her! If Minami thought she would accept that, she was totally WRONG.
“Are you alright…” Miichan asked, coming back.
Minami wanted to be alone.
“Perfect.” Atsuko replied, not even looking at her.
“She said… it was a mistake and-”
“A MISTAKE?! REALLY?! WELL, I’M GOING TO MAKE A MISTAKE BY KILLING HER THEN!”
The loud words were heard by everyone and even the music stopped. Feeling bad for interrupting the bal this, Atsuko just left the place, with what was left as her dignity. She could feel the rage inside of her, and she needed to concentrate a lot just to be able to walk straight, not going in a certain bathroom where she would sure she could find her next victim. Now, everyone knew the greatest duo was going to have one ultimate battle the next time they met, and they would be happy not to see it for once, knowing there would be blood everywhere.
Atsuko was mad. There was no better direct way to explain how she felt. She would easily punch someone if it wasn’t for her beautiful outfit she didn’t want to ruin. She was ready to go home. She wouldn’t stay one second more in this school. She wanted to avoid this place forever. How was it going to be tomorrow? She would never be able to face everyone’s look this way! There was only one way to have her dignity back. She would have revenge. She wanted to… she didn’t know what she was going to do, but she would put all her hatred inside, throwing it to Minami and she would be K.O.
A mistake, right? Just a damn mistake, RIGHT? That was not a mistake, Atsuko was sure of it. Everything was there. All the signs she used to know if she should kiss someone or not were there. THAT WAS NOT A MISTAKE. Minami had attracted her on purpose only to reject her better after. Atsuko was sure of it, and the more she thought about it, the more she wanted to throw her from the top of Tokyo Tower.
***
The next day, everyone was waiting for a confrontation between the two enemies. They all knew what had happened last night. They feared both of them, ignoring Atsuko when she would walk in the way, avoiding Minami by trying not to cross her way. They knew Minami could have a really bad character when she wanted and most of the time, they would just avoid to talk to her. The only one who dared provoking her in these kinds of situation was Atsuko. However, since they were both madly angry at each other, there was a glacial silence everywhere in the school. They didn’t hear anyone screaming or insulting each other, and it was during these times that it was the most dangerous.
Even Sae, Yuko, Haruna, Miichan and the two Tomomi were walking alone. Atsuko was nowhere to be seen. Minami seemed to be gone as well. It was only at the end of the day that every student learned they had feared for nothing, since the two had not come today at school. It seemed they were both too busy hating the other to come today… or maybe they were both busy to plan something worst… which their friends refuse to think about.
The second day, Minami was back. Avoiding everyone’s look, terrifying anyone who would dare reminding her that night, she was by herself most of the time, except at lunch time when she would finally talk to Yuko and Haruna. But except a few words, that wasn’t a long conversation, only the forbidden subject finally came out from Yuko’s mouth. The “KojiYuu” duo couldn’t stop themselves from asking.
“You know… you should try to calm down maybe… I mean, she’s not here now…” Yuko said carefully, watching Minami killing her plate at the “she” mention.
“So what?” Minami growled.
“Well… when we’re together now, you can smile…” Haruna tried to say.
“If ever she suddenly appears and sees me smile and thinks I’m happy, I’m going to kill myself.” Minami replied.
“Minami~!” Yuko pouted. “You can’t just keep on pretending this forever! I saw the ki-”
“You didn’t see anything!” Minami shouted. “NOTHING!”
There was silence amongst the students. They all noticed how… volcanic Minami’s personality seemed to be now. In less than a second, she could explode and kill whoever she wanted with her eyes.
“I saw the… the… incident then!” Yuko said, desperate to pierce Minami’s shield. “You took a few seconds to reject her, you know!”
“Me?! No!” Minami said. “I was surprised! It doesn’t mean anything else! Ah, I hate her!!”
“Minami…” Haruna said, slower than her –we-re-not-in-love- friend. “You know… I saw it very well. I think that…”
“NOTHING!” Minami screamed before leaving her friends. “I’m tired of this! She’s so desperate! Who cares if I rejected her?! I’m the only one who can do it! If she wants to find anyone to kiss and then just leave because she has enough of it, she has plenty of foolish boys, girls, whoever, waiting for her! I don’t want to just be… a prize or whatever!”
On these words, she looked deep in the eyes of Yuko, showing her how serious she was, and left the place. From now on, she didn’t want to be around so many people. Atsuko’s kiss had just… made her lost her identity! Now she wasn’t “Minami”, noooo, she was “Atsuko’s new unreal crush!” If she was going to have this kind of reputation, she’d rather leave the school already! And why was Atsuko always on her mind?! She would never accept to be a “prize” to her! She would never accept to fall in love with her if it was only to be hurt in the end.
***
The following month was quiet. Atsuko was back at school the fourth day, ignoring the world, especially one person she hated even more. Her cheek still hurt, reminding her the humiliation everyday. One thing though… the bal had made her even more popular. She would now date many people a week, flirting and kissing anyone on her way. No one from the popular group understood why she was acting this way, it disgusted Minami even more to see so many people being manipulated by Atsuko. However, she started to feel bad about her magisterial slap… Maybe she should have done something else… like talking to her, and then slap her…
“I can’t believe it…” Minami whispered, avoiding another way to her class because she saw Atsuko kissing a boy from the corner of her eye.
Just by seeing it, it seemed a storm started in her heart and she became mad for the rest of the day. Without being totally aware of it, she would insult anyone, for anything, even smallest information received by others. She would yell at teachers, punch the wall, at the point of non-return, when the director decided to suspend her for a week. She accepted it without any problem, saying she couldn’t stand being in the same school as her worst enemy. No… that wasn’t the point… it was more that she couldn’t resist the point of seeing her kissing… whoever else. It just made her frustrated without really having a great reason to feel this way.
Why was she so mad about it now?! She had no idea, but she knew one thing, Atsuko was always on her mind, even in a negative way. Before, she would often forget about the existence of this enemy, but now, since the incident, she couldn’t get her out of her mind. She would think one time about her per day… And that one time last 24 hours! Minami started to wonder if it was because of all the kisses… and shook her head. She was not going to be jealous just because Atsuko suddenly had on mind to kiss the entire school.
Atsuko had a great reason though. She was searching something. She was chasing after this indescribable feeling she had felt when she had kissed “her”. She was literally forcing everyone to kiss her just so she could feel it again. This heat, this passion, this desire even though it wasn’t the deepest kiss she had had… She couldn’t believe “she” was the only person that could make her feel this way. She wouldn’t accept it! Never! She was never going to accept it! She would kiss every single person of the school if she needed it, but there was no way “she” was the one!
“Minami!” A voice shouted as she was leaving the school for the first day of three.
She turned around, only to see Miichan. Farther behind was Atsuko, who would obviously stay at this distance, giving her mortal glares, waiting for Miichan to leave her as soon as possible, like if she was a virus the earth needed to exterminate.
“You’re stupid.” Miichan said, slapping her head from behind slightly. “How can you miss three days! The exams are coming!”
“I’m going to be fine.” Minami said. “Plus, I don’t want to stay either.”
She stared at Atsuko a moment, ignoring Miichan, until her friend brought her back to reality.
“Are you two seriously going to keep ignoring each other forever?!”
“That’d be a great idea.” Minami confirmed. “At least until our graduation.”
Miichan was about to facepalm herself, but managed to hold it for longer.
“Plus, have you seen all the sudden lovey-dovey couples these days?! I can’t stand it! It’s like they all want to kiss in front of me! It’s disturbing!”
“You’re jealous?” Miichan smirked.
“Ew… never!” Minami frowned. “I’m glad I can go home and think about more important things THAN KISSING EVERY LIVING THING ON EARTH.
She had said the last part louder, provoking Atsuko who just rolled her eyes. Taking it as a victory, Minami smiled and left the place. Miichan sighed and went back to where Atsuko stood.
“I can’t believe you didn’t reply…” Miichan said. “You’re sick or something?”
Atsuko looked away, shaking her head.
“Oh please, no…” Miichan whispered. “That’s the same look Yuko has when I ask her something about Haruna…”
Atsuko froze.
“Something?!” She asked. “If that something includes something totally irrational, forget about it!”
There was a silence between the two until Miichan broke it.
“I think she left on purpose.” She said, not looking at Atsuko’s questioned face. “Minami wanted to leave school for a while.”
“Glad she did so… I was about to take revenge…” Atsuko said, even though she had no idea of what the “revenge” could be.
She just didn’t want Miichan to think she was suddenly going to be nice just because she hadn’t reply to Minami’s provocation. She didn’t want Miichan to think she wanted to be friend with that girl, please! She didn’t want her to think Minami actually had made her way to Atsuko’s heart recently. Wait… the last sentence was pure madness, she should erase it from her soul.
“A member of her family died recently.” Miichan continued. “I guess she wanted to think about it by herself…”
Atsuko didn’t answer. Was that the real reason then? She felt a bit bad she had not seen the sad omnipresent look in Minami’s eyes for all the time… though she had to admit Minami would have an angry look whenever they would meet so that didn’t help…
“Great then. I won’t be able to see her face for long.” Atsuko answered, leaving Miichan alone.
Miichan stayed there for a moment, then smiled. She may not have been able to pierce Minami’s shield, but she had been able to totally break Atsuko’s into pieces.
***
Even though Minami’s suspension lasted only one week, the girl seemed to have stopped going to school. Three weeks after the incident, she was still not back. What was strange though, was that Atsuko didn’t seem to be happier of this sudden change. If they didn’t know her so well, her friends would thought she actually… missed Minami, which was totally impossible! Plus, since Minami’s suspension, she had not kissed one single person. She had not even dated anyone. She had totally… stop being in any relationship!
“I don’t get it…” Miichan sighed.
“I never got it…” Yuko frowned. “What’s wrong with these two?! I thought Atsuko would be more than happy… but she’s like… gone in another world since Minami left.”
“I hear you.” Atsuko said. “I’m not gone… I’m just taking a short break from love.”
“Love?” Itano tomomi asked, raising an eyebrow.
Atsuko didn’t answer. It wasn’t love. Love was… this lost feeling she had tried to find by kissing everyone… Love was the way she had felt when she had kissed the person she hated the most. Love was… lost. Minami was right. It wasn’t by dating so many people she was going to find her true soul sister. She hated to admit it, but Minami had told her the truth from the beginning… and now she had probably lost any chance to get this feeling back.
***
Atsuko walked in front of Minami’s house. Not that she knew exactly where she lived because she once had the crazy idea to murder her while she was sleeping… but she knew where she lived. She walked slower… slower… slower… and without being totally conscious of it, she just stayed immobile in front of the house until she saw Minami leaving it. She tried to hide, but it was too late.
“What’s wrong with you?!” Minami growled as she saw the one haunting her thoughts since she had left the school. “Following me?!”
Atsuko stayed quiet. Traces of tears could be seen on Minami’s face. Even to Atsuko, she had never seemed so weak, lost, without protection. Atsuko shivered at the look Minami had. Maybe she should have gone directly at her house in the end. She should have just ignored her thoughts saying to go and see her… She didn’t want Minami to think that she pitied her or something…
“I’m not…” Atsuko said. “I was just passing by…”
“Your house is not this way at all…” Minami sighed.
“How do you know?!” Atsuko answered, surprised.
“Never mind…”
Minami seemed to ignore her, but as she wanted to go back into her house, Atsuko called her again. The two enemies fixed each other, a strange atmosphere between them.
“What do you want?!” Minami sighed. “You’re worst than a stalker!”
“Oh well, excuse me if I just wanted to walk!” Atsuko frowned.
“Excuse me if I need some privacy!” Minami replied.
“Excuse me if I’m trying to be nice!”
“I don’t want you to be nice! You annoy me.” Minami said.
“YOU annoy me!”
“SHUT UP ALREADY!”
“BYE!”
Atsuko sighed and started to walk away. Minami followed her for a short distance before finally accepting the fact that she should just apologize… or maybe not… It was Atsuko they were talking about after all… but this was starting to be ridiculous. They couldn’t just fight over… this stupid detail. Now she realized it. She realized… life.
“Hey…” Minami called. “I’m sorry for the… the… what happened.”
She had said it with a very small voice, totally discrete and hoping she would not be heard by anyone around them, but Atsuko heard her very well and looked at her, surprised. She just nodded though. She didn’t want Minami to think she would forgive her that easily. It had hurt so much! She was sure it was still pink on her cheek! Damn… she could still see Minami’s hand literally flying and crash on her face! Deep inside, she was happy to hear that… not because she had apologized… but because if Minami apologized, it meant she had won this time. And apologizing like that, all shy… she just discovered another part of her enemy… She knew it must have taken so many efforts just to say those words…
“Then… I just wanted to tell you that… I’m sorry for… what happened to you.” Atsuko said, talking about the tragedy in her family.
Minami didn’t react to this one, though Atsuko knew she was about to let tears fall down again. She stared at Minami for a moment, not knowing what to do. Should she comfort her? Or was it too fast? Or was it the best thing to do? Would Minami be afraid if she approached her again? Would she run away? It was too fast probably… They were still not even friends… Discovering a, she hated to admit it, cute and sensible face of Minami didn’t mean they would be friends… Discovering this new face of her, a loveable part she couldn’t hate no matter how hard she tried… but still, they had wished each other’s death not so long before!
There was nothing else she could add. She still felt angry about the night she had received the slap… but she couldn’t take revenge when Minami seemed so down. She didn’t want to rush things… but thinking about it, she would do anything to feel this way again, even if it meant kissing her again… If it wasn’t for this heavy atmosphere, she would have done it… Seeing Minami looking in her eyes this way, so intense… she could just move forward and capture those lips if she wanted. The fact that Minami was standing in front of her this way, without them yelling or screaming, proved that something had changed. There were the signs that she could kiss someone… but last time she had tried to kiss Minami, she had received the worst result ever, so she didn’t dare try again, even if she was sure… she could see desire… no, she must be day-dreaming.
She felt good being there… even if there was still a part she couldn’t understand. While kissing so many people, she had never been able to feel the same way, so why…
Why were they enemies already? What was so fun at teasing someone to the point of wishing they died? When in fact… it was the total opposite happening now.
“What are you looking at me like that…” Minami asked. “I have something on my face or what?”
“Maybe.” Atsuko said awkwardly, trying to avoid her eyes.
Minami just rolled her eyes. She couldn’t believe she had thought THAT girl was “nice and sweet” and everything on that night. It was just a wrong time.
“Can’t I look at you?” Atsuko asked, surprising the little girl.
“No, it’s fine… It’s just… strange.”
“I’m leaving now…” Atsuko said, leaving the place, almost running.
“WAIT!” Minami screamed one last time. “You’re different.”
“What?” Atsuko frowned.
“Usually, you would have insulted me. You would have yelled at me. We would have fight. You would have been so happy for me not to come at school… Now you’re here, in front of me, apologizing for whatever… not even trying to avoid me… what’s wrong with you?!”
Atsuko wanted to answer honestly, but instead, she decided to go with another way. A way to prove Minami that what she was saying was true… but that there was also something more that she didn’t seem to realize.
“And you?” Atsuko asked. “You’re not avoiding me either. You apologized. You didn’t yell at me like you used to do just when you see my face. If I’m strange, then what are you?”
“What are YOU?” Minami frowned. “What have you done with the popular player? I heard from Yuko you stopped dating people. I heard you stopped asking everyone out. I heard you don’t even try to be popular anymore. What happened to Atsuko, the serial lover of our school?”
There was a short silence. The tension was at the maximum level, but Atsuko knew she couldn’t move back anymore.
“She fell in love.”
Minami, shocked, didn’t answer. These four words had… just pierce through the barrier she had built around her heart, making it hurt a little. One question remained: who? The silence made Atsuko run away. She didn’t want to talk anymore anyway. There was nothing she could add to explain herself. Just this short sentence was enough to explain the whole situation to anyone.
***
It took a long time for them to talk again together. When they did, they would often just say “hello” to each other. When they were with their friends, they would just answer to others, not directly at each other. When they were alone, they would pretend to text someone or add someone in the conversation, just so they could start avoiding each other again. They didn’t fight anymore, which made some students wondering what exactly had happened. The bal was done for a long time already. It had been over four months already, but it seemed this short experience had been enough to mess their thoughts for their entire life.
Minami didn’t yell at Atsuko and vice versa. They would rarely have long conversations… but still! It was a huge progress considering the fact that Atsuko had never “had revenge” for the humiliation. Her player status was now almost only an old past. Her player status still remained in some immature boys, but most of the students had come to realize she had changed. Even Sae had admitted the fact that Atsuko had finally move over the “player” status. Sae had tried to find the cause of this sudden change, but Atsuko wouldn’t say anything to her. She didn’t want to pronounce one single word about the fact that “speed dating” every week was enough to her now.
On her side, Minami was back to ignore Miichan, Yuko and Haruna thoughts. They would often pretend she had a “thing” for Atsuko, which she would strongly deny. She might not hate Atsuko as much as she used to, there was still a limit to what she could do… right? IF, only IF, she really thought of Atsuko this way… maybe it was the reason why she had once been so frustrated to see her kissing this boy. After all, it could be… no, not jealousy! She had heard about this word… It was the worst thing she could get! She didn’t want to be jealous! Being jealous was just… a prove she was in love! She wasn’t in love! At least, she thought she wasn’t!
“Hey!”
While she was deep in thoughts, Minami didn’t realize Atsuko had joined her. It was the end of the day, and they were going back to their houses. It surprised Minami though, because now she really knew Atsuko lived at the opposite of her.
“What?” Minami mumbled, still not used of being friendly to her.
Atsuko really made efforts to talk to her more often. It was nice from her to try to make things better between them… but really, why?
“Do I really need a reason each time I want to talk to you…” Atsuko sighed, a bit sad by Minami’s cold character.
But she knew this cold character was not everything about Minami… knowing this, it just made her wanting to know more and more about her…
“I’m not used, that’s all. We’ve never really talked to each other.” Minami said, wondering if the player was still in love with the same person.
She couldn’t help wondering about it since the day Atsuko had told her she loved someone. She couldn’t help wondering “who” it was. Someone she knew? A friend? A boy? A girl? A person from another school? The possibilities were unlimited.
“Look, I don’t think it’s a problem if I want to have a conversation with you sometimes.”
“I think it is.” Minami joked. “We can’t have a conversation without killing each other, admit it.”
“Can’t you be a little more optimist? I get to know you better, you know!”
It was exactly what Minami didn’t want to hear. Recently, she had thought a lot about how much she knew about Atsuko now. It was like she was just meeting a total different person from the one she knew! And knowing that… she was afraid she might fall in love with her… She didn’t want that to happen, and it was the main reason why she would try to avoid long conversation with her. She would avoid her at school, or anywhere else. She didn’t want to fall in love for her, because she knew she loved someone else. She knew she would only get hurt in the end, so she wouldn’t allow her to feel this way. Why would she fall for her anyway? Sure, Atsuko was nice with her now, sometimes funny, sometimes she would act like she cared about her… but why would she fall for someone who would reject her in the end? It made no sense to her. She didn’t want to get hurt…
Plus, since Atsuko had visited her at her home… she couldn’t help thinking that they could have kissed at that time… How would she have reacted? She didn’t know… but she wouldn’t have hurt her for sure… Why hadn’t Atsuko tried to kiss her this time? It was clear to her: Atsuko was not in love with her. Atsuko had kissed her at the bal because she pitied her, that was all.
“I don’t want to be optimist. Everyone hates me…” Minami sighed.
“What? No!” Atsuko frowned.
No? Minami couldn’t help just raise her eyebrow. NO? Coming from Atsuko, now that was the most stupid thing she had ever heard.
“Come on, you know what I’m talking about. You get to know someone better, you fall in love with them, and suddenly, they just decided to leave because they find someone better. Look, you tried to… well, you know what happened, last time. You’re the only one who ever tried that, you know? You were the first… and probably the last one.”
Atsuko couldn’t help thinking about her player reputation when she thought about it. Minami was right. She was like that… No, she had been like that. She wasn’t anymore. And Minami knew the reason!
“It doesn’t mean everyone hates you.” Atsuko sighed.
“I don’t care now…” Minami just said. “I’m not “enough” for anyone to love me, right? Seeing our friends so happy in love these days just made me realize that… maybe I won’t be able to live this.”
“Not enough?” Atsuko laughed. “I think you can be beautiful… sometimes… when you smile.
“Really?” Minami frowned at Atsuko’s sudden sweet tone. “No.”
“Sure…” Atsuko whispered, unsure of what to say. “It’s true.”
Why was she so nice with her so suddenly? Was it so she could hurt her more after?
“I would have… never mind.” Minami said, walking faster so she could avoid Atsuko’s look on her.
“What? What did you say?” Atsuko asked, thinking she might get something from that.
There was this tone in Minami’s voice… One of the sign she could so easily recognize when she was with someone special… One of the sign she had noticed that night, one of the reasons why she had decided to kiss her at first… If she could just…
“Nothing. It doesn’t matter now that…”
“Now that?”
“That you’re in love.” Minami finished, avoiding her.
“What’s the problem?” Atsuko asked, knowing very well where the conversation was heading.
It was dangerous though. She knew their relationship was not even at the “friendship” state, so she had to be really careful not to rush things. If she did, it would be over. And if it was over, God knew she would feel so bad about it she wouldn’t even be able to look at herself in a mirror.
“Nothing.”
“Nothing what?!”
“It doesn’t matter. Just saying that… I wouldn’t… last time…”
“Yes?” Atsuko asked, knowing what was going to happen.
“I wouldn’t have slapped you last time if you… if you had tried to… to kiss me.”
Minami was looking at the floor, though she secretly hated herself for saying such words. Atsuko would never take them seriously. She would laugh at her, she would say it to everyone at school, she would hit her to death, she would…
“Damn… I almost waited.” Atsuko smiled.
“WHAT? HOW DARE YOU!” Minami screamed, suddenly finding this yankee energy in her heart.
She felt so bad now. Atsuko was waiting for it?! She had planned it?! She had planned to make her fall for her and leave her after?! Was that her revenge?! SHE HATED HER.
“You know… you only have to ask me…” Atsuko whispered, moving closer, making Minami moving back.
“What? B-But… You’re in love.”
“You only have to ask me.” Atsuko said nicely, looking at her in an intense way, a way she wouldn’t give to anyone else.
“B-But…”
Minami didn’t say anything else. She couldn’t. She was not really… Her feelings could not really…
“W-Well… It’s just that… I mean, if the situation was different… I mean, if you don’t care… Let’s say that… I would like to try… I mean…”
Atsuko thought Minami was so cute she couldn’t resist anymore. She knew very well what Minami wanted to ask her anyway, so she did so. She erased the distance between their lips, kissing her like the first time, at the bal. she didn’t rush it, taking all the time in the world to make her understand this kiss meant everything. This time, nothing bad followed, but a sweet answer from the girl she held in her arms. When she stopped the gently contact, she made sure to keep Minami in her arms, just because she was afraid she might leave.
“I thought you would never ask me…” Atsuko sighed happily. “It’s you I fell in love with! No one else… you…”
“Me?” Minami asked. “We… we hated… each other…”
She couldn’t believe it.
“Not anymore…” Atsuko smiled. “There’s only you to make me feel this way…”
“Which way?”
“The feeling… that I’m alive.”
Minami didn’t know what to answer. Her first love… was not rejecting her? And her first love was… her worst… no, her?
“Are you sure… you didn’t… you’re not… like… are you sure?” She stammered, afraid it might just be a dream.
“I’ve never been so sure in my life…” Atsuko smirked. “And… now… can I do it again… or are you going to slap me?”
Minami couldn’t help thinking the girl she had in front of her was the same as the one she had had in front of her at the bal.
“No need to ask me…” She murmured because her lips met Atsuko’s for the second time.
Her heart was racing. She didn’t know where she was anymore. She had totally lost the control of her body. All she did was to answer Atsuko’s kiss, hoping it was only the beginning. This time, she thought that if she was going to be hurt in this relationship… no, she didn’t want to think about it. She felt good now. Even though things were too fast… she had to admit she liked it. She liked Atsuko’s lips, Atsuko’s arms, Atsuko’s voice… The player… had gotten her. Honestly, she didn’t care too much… but still…
That time… she thought that if ever Atsuko really killed her… that would be by love, not by hatred.
