PHEW. That was close, no OT.

Quote
Bryant scored 41 points while becoming the youngest player to reach 24,000, leading the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers to a 114-98 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night.

Scoring basket after basket on turnaround jumpers and inside moves against the undersized Memphis defenders in the low post, Bryant carried the Lakers while reaching the milestone 38 days before Wilt Chamberlain did. With a second-half surge from his growing repertoire of inside moves, he even overtook Grizzlies guard Allen Iverson for 16th place on the NBA’s career scoring list.

simply epic. Artest is flowing well within the defense and offense. Bench even hit it hard. MBENGA!!! :thumbup

Really AI?? Taking a leave of absence. PRACTICE?! Wonder if is gonna weasel his way to the Cavs. Peep the interview:

Allen Iverson had plenty to say during his recent trip to the Bay Area – most notably, that he isn’t happy about coming off the bench for the Memphis Grizzlies – and his attitude likely won’t change unless or until the Grizzlies start winning.

Say what you will about A.I., but he has no problem speaking his mind. From his free-agency experience this past summer to his future to even his hair, Iverson touched on a handful of topics – besides his role with the Grizzlies – during a one-on-one interview with Yahoo! Sports.

Q: After things went bad with the Detroit Pistons, did you feel like you needed to sell the Grizzlies on signing you?

Iverson: Nah. I talked with them and had a conversation with them about what I wanted for the rest of my career, what I can do for the squad. But I’m not playing basketball no more to make money or anything like that or fame. I’ve been there and did that. I just want to be happy doing what I love to do. If I felt I had to sell myself or sell out to be somebody that I’m not, then I wouldn’t do it anymore. I’d be playing at the YMCA.

Q: Can you envision the day you walk away from the NBA?

Iverson: Hell yeah. I got a wife and five kids. I definitely can see myself walking away from basketball, walking away from [the media]. I don’t have to talk to y’all every [expletive] day. There is a lot of y’all I don’t dislike, a lot of y’all I love. But there is a lot of y’all I hate. But I understand that media people just do their job. Nobody wants to hear no positive Allen Iverson story about me giving out turkeys, doing something for the Boys & Girls Club. They want to hear stories about A.I. cursing the coach out and stuff like that. That positive [stuff] don’t sell.”

Q: Did you feel like the NBA and your skeptics left you for dead this offseason?

Iverson: Why not? Why not? I ain’t never had a whole bunch of people running around saying “I love Allen Iverson” my whole career. If you say there is a million of them that love me, there is a million of them that love me. It’s more that don’t. There’s more that would rather see me fail than succeed. You think I don’t know that people left me for dead?

Struggling Hornets fire Scott; Bower to take over

By NBA.com staff reports
Posted Nov 12 2009 2:51PM

New Orleans Hornets general manager Jeff Bower will assume the team's head coaching duties after the Hornets fired coach Byron Scott early Thursday morning.

Former Hornets coach Tim Floyd has been named as Bower's top assistant.

Scott was fired when the team arrived in New Orleans at 5 a.m. Thursday local time from Phoenix, where the Hornets were beaten by the Suns to fall to 3-6 in what has been a disappointing start to the season. According to TNT analyst David Aldridge, Bower informed the coaches and the team of his decision later Thursday morning.

"Accountability was our theme this past summer," Hornets vice president Chad Shinn said in a statement released by the team. "We talked about the fact that everyone on our staff is held to a certain standard of performance and we didn't feel this was happening at the head coach level.

"We feel like we still have an opportunity with our nucleus to get to where we want and Jeff is the right guy, right now to move us in that direction from the bench."

Bower was on the Hornets' bench in recent years as an assistant to both Paul Silas and Floyd, but has been the general manager of the team since 2005. He has been involved in the front office during most of his 14 years with the organization, as a scout and director of player personnel. Bower was an assistant coach at college at Penn State and Marist.

Floyd's last job was as coach of USC from 2005-09, where he went 85-49 and led the Trojans to the Sweet 16 in 2007. He coached the Hornets in the 2003-04 season, guiding a team led by Baron Davis and Jamaal Magloire to a 41-41 record and first-round loss to the Miami Heat in the playoffs.

Scott had coached the Hornets for the last five years, including a two-year ordeal (2005-06 and 2006-07) when they split time between New Orleans and Oklahoma City in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He compiled a 203-216 record with the Hornets, who are coming off of a 124-104 pounding in Phoenix on Wednesday night.

Scott, who had a 14-year career as a player in the NBA, came to the Hornets after three-and-a-half seasons in New Jersey, during which time he compiled a 149-139 (.517) record and took the Nets from the bottom of the Eastern Conference (only three teams were worse the season before he arrived) to a spot as one of the NBA's elite teams. They made back-to-back NBA Finals appearances during his tenure.

When Scott took over the Hornets following the 2003-04 season, he was the team's third coach in three seasons. He was the NBA coach of the year in 2008, when star guard Chris Paul led the Hornets to a 56-26 record. That season, the Hornets beat Dallas in the opening round of the playoffs before losing to San Antonio in the seventh game of their Western Conference semifinal series.

This season, the Hornets looked lethargic at both ends of the court; on offense, there was very little movement in the team's halfcourt sets when Paul didn't have the ball, and significant falloff at the defensive end.

"That's the thing that's killing us right now," Paul said last week. "We can't stop teams. That's one thing coach always says: offense, that'll come night in and night out, 'cause we play 82 games. But if we defend every night, we have a chance to win every night..it's communication. I think our biggest issue is trust. Trust. 'Cause when you're defending a guy, you have to trust that your teammate has your back. And we can learn. We can learn from teams like the Spurs, like the Celtics."

But Paul said the team was not playing badly because it missed Chandler, who brought blocked shots and energy at the defensive end and was Paul's frequent target for crowd-pleasing alley-oops. The Hornets traded Chandler to Charlotte last summer for forward Emeka Okafor.

"I can't put my finger on it, but we've got to find a way," Paul said. "We've got guys that have been in this league a long time. We've got a nice little nucleus that's been here for a while. These are issues that we probably shouldn't be having."

MIAMI -- Dwyane Wade pleaded for years to join the Jordan Brand family, wanting to wear the shoe his idol made famous.

His persistence is being rewarded.

When Jordan Brand makes its long-awaited release of the Air Jordan 2010 in February to commemorate the popular line's 25th anniversary, Wade will debut the shoe. Hand-picked for the role by Michael Jordan himself, the Miami Heat guard called it "a huge honor."

"I was in awe, because I know what it means to not only be a part of Jordan Brand but really represent Michael on the court in the shoe he would wear," Wade told The Associated Press. "Very excited, to say the least."

The shoe will be launched nationwide Feb. 13 and will carry a retail price of $170. That coincides with All-Star weekend near Dallas and is four days before Jordan's 47th birthday. It's unknown if Wade will wear the shoe beforehand, say in Miami's marquee Christmas Day game at Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks.

"Sometimes you have to pass the torch. ... He epitomizes what the brand represents," Jordan said Wednesday night, when the arrangement was formally announced. "Being a player from our home community of Chicago, he has won championships already, his work ethic ... those is are all things that I feel like represent the brand. I think we can build a great relationship."

Wade's game has often been compared to Jordan's, even though the Heat guard is two inches shorter than the six-time champion -- something Jordan pointed out Wednesday, when he stood back-to-back with Wade.

"He thinks he can beat me; I know I can beat him," Jordan said, smiling. "The only way to find out is to put these shoes on and go out and play. He's wearing my shoe. I'm not wearing Dwyane Wade's shoe."

Jordan said that consumers have pushed him "to take the next Air Jordan beyond their wildest imagination."

This was beyond Wade's imagination, anyway.

He spent six years wearing Converse apparel, then made the switch to Jordan Brand in July. (Both are owned by Nike.) Details of his contract with Jordan Brand were not disclosed, although it was certain to at least match the remaining three years at $6 million annually left on his Converse deal.

Jordan Brand spokeswoman Terri Hines said Wade is the first pitchman for the Air Jordan other than Jordan himself.

It's the latest notch in Wade's business world: He also has strong deals with T-Mobile and Gatorade.

"One thing I understood coming over to the brand, it's a team," Wade said. "I'm fortunate enough to be able to be in a spot with guys like Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Derek Jeter, all those guys. We all have a role to play. And I'm going to play the role that they signed me up for and hopefully I do the best I can."

The shoes displayed Wednesday night were black and white with red trim and circular windows on both sides, with Jordan calling them "trendy," "stylish" and "high-performance."

This arrangement had been kept under wraps for months. Wade told only few people, including teammate Quentin Richardson, who like Wade is a Chicago native who grew up idolizing Jordan's play with the Bulls.

Richardson has worn the Jumpman line throughout his NBA career.

"I think it meant the world to him, truthfully," Richardson said. "Us being from Chicago, I don't think people understand. ... We adored M.J. We watched every move he made. I think for us guys, it made a big difference. And even before he came over to Jordan, Dwyane would wear it. He'd come over to my house and get stuff all the time."

Aligning himself even closer to Jordan is as big a perk as being able to wear the Air Jordans, Wade said.

"Before this, our relationship was kind of on the basis of seeing him and still being in awe of the person I grew up watching," Wade said. "Now I can e-mail, call him, all these lines of communication. So I think it's kind of cool. He responds back to me a lot quicker now than he used to."

Kobe won't say it, but I will.

Lakers were just plain tired.  Late game on Thursday, followed by a late night flight to Denver, probably landing at like 3AM, exacerbated by the fact that Denver has thinner air means that they went into this game at a disadvantage.  Most of the shots they missed were way short, some of them being airballs.  If that isn't a sign of fatigue, I don't know what is.

I heard that Artest was saying "don't double Carmelo, I'll take care of him".  Mistake? I think so.

Add to that the fact that J.R. Smith was knocking down just about every shot he took and Kenyon Martin was being a beast in the paint, and this Friday the 13th loss makes more sense.  I expect the Lakers to bounce back in a big way against Houston at home on Sunday.

The Grizz and A.I. are no more.
He only played 3 games with them, all coming off the bench, and now they're splitsville.
Who couldn't see this coming, know what I mean.

I seriously doubt any other team will try to sign him now, seeing as how he'll complain from the get go if he has to come off the bench.

IMHO, A.I. should call it a career, because I don't see any other team wanting him and possibly screwing up their own team chemistry... but, anything can happen.

DAMN How good it is to have Gasol back. Everyone clicking (except Sasha) everyone sharing the ball. WOO Lakers get the biggest team point total of the season.

Iverson not retiring? How come we ain't surprised lol. He and Larry Brown should re-unite, he had his MVP years with him.
